F. H. BLOBMKER.
Y RULER ATTACHMENT TOR sLATBs.
N0. 353,477. Patented NOV. 30, 188.6.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK H. BLOEMKER, OF ST. LOUIS,Y MISSOURI, ASSIGNOROF ONE-HALF TO MICHAEL WAGNER, OF SAME PLACE.
RULER ATTACHMENT FOR SLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,477, dated Navember 30, 1886.
l Application filed May 8, 1886. Serial'No. 261,555). (No model.)
To all whom 71T) mayconcern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. BLOEMKER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ruler Attachments for Slates,
of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- aet description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in whieh- Io Figure l is a front view of a folding slate in open condition. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section at 2 2, Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged detail perspective views showing opposite ends of the ruler. Fig. 5 is a front View x5 of asingle slate with the improvement applied thereto. Fig. 6` is an enlarged detail section at 6 6, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail secion at 7 7, Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is an enlarged de tail section at 8 8, Fig. 5.
2o A is aslate of ordinary construction, except that the side bars of the frame are made with retaininggrooves a and a', to receive the lips b b ofthe clips B of the ruler O. The bearing of the clips on the frame is such that the ruler can only be detached or removed at the ends of the slate, while the ruler is held in a position parallel with the end bars of the frame, twhile at the same time it may be freely moved upward and downward. lf desired, the clips 3o may be extended, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to have a broad bearing on the side bars of the frame.
rlhe ruler I prefer to form with a recess, D,
for the pencil, and this recess has a cover, E,
working on a pivot, e, in opening and closing.
F is a set-screw by which the ruler may be locked in any position.
Gr is a metal plate secured to a side bar of the frame and having a hole to admit the point of the set-screw when it is desired to se- 4:1 curethe ruler in a central or fixed position.
The frame may be covered with cloth in the ordinary manner, as seen in Figs. 6 and 7, the grooves a and a being alone left uncovered. The grooves a are shown in the outer edges of the side bars of the frame, and the clips, whose lips b work in these grooves, are shown turned inward ata right angle. In a single slate, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, both of the grooves and clips are of this form; but with a double slate it is obvious that the construction must be modiiied, because when the slate is open, or the inner faces of the slate are in use, the edges of two of the side bars would be covered. In this case the groove a is madein the face of the side bar in place of the edge, and is made oblique. the lip b having similar obliquity. (See Fig. 2.)
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a slate having outside grooves in its side bars,4and a ruler eX- tending across the slate, having clips B. one at each end, formed with inturned lips occupying the outside grooves in the side bars, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a slate formed with an oblique face-groove, a, and a ruler, O, provided with a clip. B, formed with an oblique lip, Z2', substantially as described.
FRANK H. BLOEMKER.
