CARPENTERS LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,653, dated July 6, 1897.
Application filed May 2'7, 1896. Serial No. 593,292. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. OLOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVoodland, in the county of Yolo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Levels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relatesto carpenters levels.
My object is to provide an improved and simple level which can be used to greater advantage in plumbing structures.
The invention consists of those novel features of construction and combinations of parts more fully set forth in the following de scription and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved level; Fig. 2, a rear view, and Fig. 3 a front View.
A designates the body of the level, which is, as usual, provided with a sight-opening B and a tube 0, containing the fluid in which there is an air-bubble.
I provide a reflector D, which is located in the opening B opposite the tube. This reflector can be made of any metal having reflective properties, or it can be a piece of common looking-glass. It can be located either straight or inclined. In the present instance I have shown it in the latter position; but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to an inclined reflector.
The reflector is preferably held in suitable slots in the body of the level by respective metal strips E and F on opposite sides of the same. As shown in the drawings, these fastening-strips are snugly sunk in body A. They abut on the edges of the mirror or reflector, but are removable, so that the latter can be taken out, if desirable. This refiector can be applied to any ordinary carpenters level, and when the level is thus equipped it can be used for a height of twelve feet, more or less, without necessitating the employment of scaffolding, whereas the ordinary form of carpenters level can only be used as high as the head of the workman.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is The herein-described carpenters level comprising the combination of a body provided with a sight-opening and having an inclined slot extending through the body at one side of the sight-opening, a mirror D located in said slot and having an exposed face, fastenin g-strips E and F abutting on the outer edge of the mirror, and a bubble-tube 0 located in the opening.
