SPIRIT LEVEL. (Application filed July 30, 1901.)
(No Ilpdel.)
WITNESSES Que,
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL E. ROE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPIRIT-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,306, dated June 24, 1902.
Application filed July 30, 1901. Serial '7 1Z44- N m l- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. ROE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough'of Manhattan, in
the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spirit-Level, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a means for mount- IO ing and carrying spirit-tubes for use on levels and plumb-rules employed by mechanics in the various trades.
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claim is a definition of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an inner side view of one section of the case. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is the angle-rule of a straight-edge to which the invention is applied, and Fig. 5 is 2 5 a front view of a cap-plate.
The device comprises a body-plate a and a cap-plate b. The body-plate has two elongated approximately tubular depressions a and a therein, such depressions being dis 3o posed in the form of a T and serving each to carry a spirit-glass c, as shown. The bodyplate a is provided at approximately the middle of each depression a and a with a circular orifice a These orifices cut into the respective depressions a and a so that the by the cap-plate b. The openings a and b and I) enable the spirit-tubes to be seen from each side of the device. The parts thus con structed are secured to the straight-edge or a plumb-rule or whatever tool may be desired by screws passing through the two plates.
In Fig. 4, dindicates the straight-edge. This straight-edge is provided with openings which expose the tubes 0 from the rear side of the straight-edge, while the tubes are exposed at the front side through the openings 1) and b of the cap-plate b. The cap-plate serves to hold the tubes in place, and by means of the cruciform arrangement of the tubes vertical aswell as horizontal attachments may be secured.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I con sider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of my claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a straight-edge, of a plane body-plate, and a plane cap-plate fastened snugly together face to face, the bodyplate being formed with two elongated de pressions therein, said depressions extending approximately at right angles to each other and being immediately adjacent and the bodyplate also having orifices respectively cutting 7 5 or extending into said depressions, and the cap-plate having orifices registering with the orifices in the body-plate, the body and cap plate being fastened to the straight-edge and the straightedge having openings respec- 8o tively alined with the openings in the body and cap plates, and spirit-tubes seated in the depressions in the body-plate and visible through the aforesaid orifices from both sides of the straight-edge.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL E. ROE.
