COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1918.
Application flIed July 11, 1914. Serial No. 85,d57.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELLIOTT L. WHITE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Suffolk, in the county of Nansemond and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tools and in particular to a combination form of tools.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device whereby a saw acting as a holder, combines to be used as a rule, a level, a plumb, and a square.
The principal object of this invention is to so combine these tools into one device that the same may be used consecutively or alternately by the user without the necessity of procuring separate tools,
Another object of this invention is to provide a device having this combination use composed of as few and simple parts as possible.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be hereinaftermore clearly set forth in the specifications and pointed out in the claim. v
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the drawings in p which,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of this device combined to be used as a rule and as a level. Fig. 2 is a view of this device as used as a plumb level. Fig. 3, is a sectional view of this device showing the construction for use as a square, and Fig. 4, is a detail of the leveling device.
In the drawings 1, is a holder for these combined tools in this instance comprising a saw adapted for ordinary use. Near the rear portion of the saw blade an aperture 2 is formed the object of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. Formed in the front end of the saw blade, and in longitudinal alinement with the aperture 2, is a slot 3, said slot being of the same distance from the rear edge 4 of the holder as the center of the aperture 2. A rule 5 is marked adjacent the rear edge 4.- along the extreme length of the holder, and a handle 6 or ordinary construction is fastened to the holder,
which in this instance, is a saw, by means of bolts 7 or other suitable formof fastening devices. A right angular member 8 is fastened by means of the bolt 7 to the holder at r angle to the rear edge 4 of the holder and provided with a graduated scale adapted to register with the plumbing device 10. A like angular device 9 is placed upon the opposite side of the holder and likewise fastened by means of the bolts 7 This member 9 has a scale not shown) upon the upper face thereof to register the angular play of the plumbing device 10, to be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The rear edge of the holder is recessed as at 11 so that an aperture 12 can be cut in the handle 6 without obstructionthereto. In thls aperture 12 is seated a leveling device 13, said leveling device comprising a right angular flange rlng member 14 having a plurality of openings 15 therethrough, and vertical and horizontal leveling devices 16 and 17 respectively. The inner flange 18 of this device is. inserted in the aperture 12 of the handle until the flange 19 seats against the face of the handle 6, and screws or other forms of suitable fastening devices are inserted through the openings 15 to fasten the device to the handle.
A plumb line 20 is removably fastened in the slot 3 previously noted, and has at the opposite end thereof a plumb bob 21, said plumb bob being fastened to the plumb line 20 at such a distance as to play within the aperture 2 in the holder previously noted, cooperating with the scale member 8 or the scale member 9 previously described for indicating upon the scale member 8 or the scale member 9 of the degree of declination or distance that the vertical surface is out of plumb.
When used the holder, which in this instance is preferably in the form of a saw, can be used as a saw without interfering with any of the other parts of the structure or when desired to be used as a rule, can so be used as plainly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or again the device can be used as a square by the insertion of the members 8 and 9 against an edge so that the edge A thereof with the rule 5 marked thereon can n the other hand the degree of ang e of the surface against which the edge 4 is placed may be readily ascertained by noting the point at which the plumb bob rests over either of the graduated members 8 or 9, it being understood of course that the plumb -bob will, readily swing to either side of the aperture 2 and accurately register the degree of angle of the surface against which the straight edge is resting. Again, by the means of the device 13, the device can be used as a leveling instrument in two directions, one of which is at right angles to the other. When a vertical level is desired the edge 4 is placed against a vertical surface upon which the member 17 will indicate the vertical position of the surface, whereas if the horizontal position is wanted, the opposite leveling device 16 is used. By thus combining into one structure parts to perform these different functions which in ordinary use are performed by separate tools, a
very handy device is had, and owing to the 4 form of structure as herein set forth, a very sim le device.
aving now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In a device of the class described, a suport formed with a straight edge, a slot in its outer end, and an enlarged aperture adjacent its inner end, said slot and the center of said aperture being equidistant from the straight edge of said support, said slot adapted to receive one end of a plumb line, a plumb bob carried by the other end of the plumb line, adapted to register with said aperture when the straight edge is engaged with a vertical surface and said surface brought to a true vertical position and an upstanding scale bar upon said support disposed at a right angle to the straight edge thereof, said scale bar being positioned adjacent said aperture and extending beyond each side thereof and cooperating with the plumb bob for indicating the degree of declination of surfaces against which the straight edge is positioned.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
