UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. HEWETT, 0F WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
MEANS FOR LOOKING TYPE-FORMS IN A CHASE.
Application filed November 4, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN E. Hnwn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Hanover and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Locking Type-Forms in a Chase; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for locking type forms in a chase.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the furniture, quoins, and roller bars are interlocked to effectually lock the form in the chase.
The invention also relates to improvements in the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement, illustrating a form locked in a chase; Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same; on the line 2-2 Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 indicates a chase formed on its inner edges with a continuous groove 2. Adjacent the end bars of the chase are bars 3, on which the usual rollers bear. One of the bars is provided on its outer edge surface with a rib t, which engages in the groove 2, and on the inner edge surface said bar is formed with a rib 5. The other bar is formed on its outer edge with a rib 4t, which engages in groove 2, while on the inner edge of said bar is a groove 5. These bars project some distance beyond the surface of the chase, as clearly shown in the drawing.
6 indicates a piece of furniture formed on one edge with a groove 7, with which the rib 5, engages, and on its opposite edge it is formed with a groove 8. A similar piece of furniture 10, cooperates with the opposite bar, and is formed with a rib 12, on its outer edge which engages the groove 5, while on the inner edge the furniture 10, is formed with a groove 13. A piece of furniture 15, formed with a rib 16, engaging groove 8, bears against the furniture 6,

on one edge, and its opposite edge clamps the form 17. Adjacent the piece of furniture 10, is a piece of furniture 19, formed on one edge with a rib 20, engaging the groove 13, and on the opposite edge it is formed with a groove 21.
22 indicates a quoin, comprising two members 23 and 2 1. The member 23, is formed with a rib 25, which engages the groove 21, and on its opposite edge it is formed with a groove 26. The member 24, is formed with a rib 27, which fits in the groove 26, and on its opposite edge is a groove 28 in which fits a rib 29, formed on a piece of furniture 30. The inner edge of the furniture 30, is Hat, and engages the form 17.
The construction so far described clamps the opposite ends of the form and holds it against transverse movement.
Adjacent one of the side bars of the chase is a piece of furniture 32, formed on one edge with a rib 33, which fits in the groove 2, and on its opposite edge is a rib 33*. Engaging the inner edge of the furniture 32, is a piece of furniture 3-1, formed on one edge with a groove 35, in which the rib 33 fits. The inner edge of the piece of furniture 3st, is flat and engages the side of the form to clamp same. Adjacent the opposite side bar of the chase is a piece of furniture 36, formed with a rib 37 to engage in the groove 2, and on its opposite edge is a groove 37. Located next to the furniture 36, is a quoin 38, comprising two members 39 and 10. The member 35), is provided with a rib 11, which fits in the groove 37 and on its opposite surface is a groove 42. The member 40, is formed on one edge with a rib 43, which fits in the groove 42, and on its opposite edge it is formed with a rib 14. Adjacent the quoin 38, is a piece of furniture 45, having on one edge a groove 46, which receives the rib 4st, while its inner edge is flat and bears against the side of the form.
The construction as described forms a clamp to engage the sides of the form, and.
to clamp the furniture and chase, the entire structure becomes rigid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination, a chase formed with a continuous groove on its inner surface, furniture having ribs and grooves extending longitudinally thereof, certain of said furniture located adjacent the chase with the ribs thereof fitting in the groove of the chase, quoins comprlsing two members, each member having ribs and grooves extending 1ongitudinally thereof with a rib on one member of each quoin engaging a groove on the other members, and with other ribs and grooves engaging with the grooves and ribs in the adjacent furniture, whereby all the furniture and quoins between a form and- JOHN E.
