Be it known that I, HERMANA. WHITE- of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and 5 useful Improvement in Printers Quoins; and

My invention relates to an improvement in printers quoins, the object being to produce quoins which will not drop out of place in the furniture of the chase eventhough they may j 4o work loose under the vibrations incident to the operation `of the press.

With these ends in view my invention consists in a two-part printers quoin the respec-` projections ot' the parts of the quoin, whereby the said parts of the quoin are held in place in the furniture even though they work loose ner faces of the respective quoins of each pair are reversely inclined, so that when the two quoins are longitudinally moved with respect 65 to each other they will, as it were, wedge apart in proportion tothe amount of their longitudinal movement in opposite directions without, however, disturbing the parallelism of their outer faces. Their inner faces are 7o adapted in the usual manner to interlock and provided with teeth for the reception of akey Aby means of which their longitudinal sliding movementV upon each other is effected. The ribs 2 extend lengthwise with the quoins and 75 preferably throughout their length. For use in conjunction with such quoins I form a longitudinal groove 4 in each piece of furniture 5. When the quoins are in place, their ribs 2 enter the grooves et in the furniture 5. 8o Then owing to the vibration of the press should the quoins of any pair work loose they will not drop away from their positions in the furniture, but will be retained therein by their ribs. This is a mattei' of very great 85 importance and convenience, because as long as the quoins are retained in their positions in the furniture, even although `they may be loose, they help keep the integrity of the relations of the several parts assembled in the 9o frame or chase 6, which, as shown in Fig. l, contains a form 7, held in place by several pieces of furniture differentiated more or less in size and by three pairs of quoins.

Inthe modified construction shown by Fig. 95 6 ofthe drawings the quoin 8 is formed upon itsrouter face with a T-shaped retaining rib or projection 9, which is entered into a corresponding Tshaped groove l0 in the furniture 11. (Shown by Fig. 7.)

In the modified form shown by Fig. 8 the quoin 12 is formed with a dovetail rib 13,

which is entered into a dovetail groove 111, formed in the furniture 15. (Shown by Fig. 9.)

In the modified construction shown by Fig. 10 the quoin 16 is provided upon its outer face With a plurality of retaining projections in the form of lugs 17, which maybe entered into furniture provided With grooves 4, as already described.

My improvement may be applied to allor almost all forms of printers quoins Whether of simple or specialized construction, as the outer faces of all quoins are smooth and may he furnished with my im proved retaining projection or projections.

In view, therefore, of the modifications suggesled and of others which may be made I would have it understood that I do not limit myself tothe exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such alterations therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A two-part printers quoin, the respective parts of which have their inner faces reversely inclined for Wedging action upon each other when they are longitudinally moved in opposite directions and each having it-s outer face provided with one or more lateral projections, in combination with straight-sided longitudinally grooved chase furniture of rectangular cross-section for receiving the projections of the parts of the quoin, whereby the said parts of the quoin are held in place in the furniture, even though they work loose with respect to each other.
