Description

PATENTED SEPT. 8, 1908.

JOHN J. BOOTH, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
SHEARS AND SCISSOBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. May 1, 1908.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Serial No. 430,362.
To all whom it may concern:
@ Be it known that I, J OHN J. BOOTH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears and Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a spring device for holding the cutting edges of shears or scissors in proper engagement to do the best cutting.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of scissors embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the blades showing the location of the spring plate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the blades showing the recess. Fig. 4 is a cross section through the blades and through the spring plate.
The blades 1 and 2 of the scissors are of the usual construction with the exception that the blade 1 between the pivot 3 and the handle portion is formed with a cross-recess 4 extending the width of the blade. In this recess 4 is located a plate spring 5 of a width to nearly fill the space, and has its ends 6 bent in hook form to embrace the walls at the ends of the recess so that it will not become displaced, that is, it cannot move in the lengthwise direction of the recess.
Over this blade 1 is placed the blade 2, and the blades are connected by the pivot screw 3. When the blades are connected, the plate spring will be located between them and the spring will not be wholly uncovered when the blades are open, thereby preventing it from falling out. This plate spring is normally curved so as to exert pressure against the blade 2 thereby tending to separate the handle ends of the blades and thereby forcing the cutting edges together so as to always hold the cutting edges in contact at the point of cutting.
I claim as my invention.
The combination of two blades of a pair of shears or scissors pivotally connected, one of the blades adjacent to the pivot formed with a transverse recess extending entirely across the blade, and a curved plate spring located in the recess having its ends in hook form and engaging the edges of the blades.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witneses.
JOHN J. BOOTH. Witnesses:
A. O. BEHEL, E. D. E. N BEHEL.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 898,401, granted September 8, 1908, upon the application of John J. Booth, of Rockford, Illinois, for an improvement in Shears and Scissors, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction, as follows: In line 51, the word blades should read blade; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
Signed and sealed this 29th day of September, A. 1)., 1908.
E. B. MOORE,
Commissioner of Patents.
