Description

J. B. JEWELL. Slate-Frame.
No. 226,319. Patented April 6,1880.
NFEIERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEH. WA SNINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. JEWELL, OF OARROLLTON, MISSOURI.
SLATE-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,319, dated April 6, 1880.
' Application filed December 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN B. JEWELL, of Garrollton, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Frames; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a partof which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with one side of the slate partially exposed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through 00 as.
The object of my invention is to furnish both sides of a slate with a sliding cover for its protection; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter explained and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents a slate, and B the frame, constructed in the ordinary way. On each side of the frame I secure the double clamps C, so constructed as to have a space on each flat face of the frame for the reception of sliding plates D. These plates are constructed to slide snugly within the clamps, or rather between the clamps and the flat face of the frame, as shown in Fig. l, and over both faces of the slate, as shown in section in Fig. 2.
this specification, in
On each sliding plate I), I construct the pencil-holder E, which is so arranged as to serve the purpose of a handle for operating the plates.
I am aware that a sliding plate for covering and protecting the face of a slate is not new; but heretofore this plate worked in grooves made in the frame of the slate, and could cover but one face of the slate, while my improvements can be readily attached to the ordinary frame of any slate and protect both faces of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An improvement in slate-frames, consisting of the sliding plates D, in combination with the double clamps O, secured to the outer edges of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The sliding plates D, provided with the pencil holders E, in combination with the double clamps (J, secured to the outer edges of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BARNET JE WELL.
