IMPROVEMENT IN PANTALOONS.

Specieatiou 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,733, dated April 4, 1876 application filed June 15, 1875.

To all lwhom it may concer/n:

Be it known that we, PHILIP F. MYERS and GEORGE WHITE, residents of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pantaloons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing', making part of this specification.

Hitherto, in the wholesale manufacture of pantaloons, to provide for fitting persons of ditferent sizes and shapes, it has been necessary to make the garment in a greatmany sizes, especially in the waist measurement.

The present invention relates to an improvement in the construction of the garment, by means whereof thedesired end is attained, (so far as the waist measurement is concerned,) with one or two sizes only. By means ofit, also, any special garment, either in readymade or in custom work, can be not only 'tted 'more readily, accurately, and neatly, but can be made to accommodate itseltl to the person, and be easier to wear.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a pair Ofpantaloons, which are of ordinaryA construction, saving that at the waist three gores, B B and C, of elastic material like rubber webbing, are inserted, and in the following manner: One, B B, at each side, and a third, C, in the center of the back. The gores, in shape, are triangular, as shown, and when in position point downward, extending froml the top ofthe garment. In this manner, the waist, being composed partly of Aelastic material, is made expansible, and thus adaptable to a grea-t variety Of waistmeasurements. To this end, the garment at the top is made considerably smaller than the portion below it and in use the waist expands and accommodates itself to the person,

and Owing to the arrangement of the gores at the sides, as Well as at the back, the garment is expanded evenly, and Without discomfort to the wearer.

We are aware that pantaloons have been made with an opening at either side seam, from the top downward, and that at saidopening One part (either the front or back ot' the garment) overlapped the other, and that near the upper ehd ofthe opening an elastic strap has been used to connect the two parts, one end Ot' which strap being fastened to the Outside of one part, and the other end to the inside of the other part. IVe are also aware that pieces of elastic material have been inserted in pantaloons, extending from the side seam at the waist in a curvilinear direction to the seat-seam. YVe therefore do not broadly claim the use of elastic material in the manufacture of pantaloons or the waist thereof; but

Having described our invention, what we claim as newtherein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In pantaloons, the combination of triangular cut-away sections, with their vertices downward, and extending downward from the top of the waist, and elastic pieces corresponding in shape to the cut-away sections, and secured to the sides of the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
