GARMENT=SUPPORTEPL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,287, dated December 19, 1899. Application filed October 14, 1898- Serial No. 693,492. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIO O. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of garment-supporting devices in which two plates, the one provided with a head or button and the other with an opening adapted to receive such head orbutton, are seen red, respectivel y, to a belt and the garment to be supported or to two garments, as a waist and skirt, the one of which is to be supported by the other. Such supporting-plates are usually located at the rear of the body, and owing to this facta difficulty has heretofore been experienced in their use, since the button or head upon the one plate could not be readily brought into juxtaposition with the opening in the other by the sense of touch upon the smooth surface of the perforated plate.
To obviate this difficulty and enable the button or head to be quickly and conveniently inserted in the opening intended to receive it is the object of my improvements. To this end I provide the perforated plate with a basin or depression surrounding the opening therein and having sides sloping toward such opening, whereby the button or head may be readily guided to and inserted in the opening. I also provide the opposite side of such plate with a depression or recess in which when the plates are in apposition the button or head lies flush with the surface of the plate, there by avoiding the objectionable elevation hitherto presented by the head.
Myinvention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming apart hereof, in which- Figure l is a plan View of the plate which has the head or button attached to it. Figs. 2 and 3 show sections of the plates. Fig. dis a plan view of the perforated plate, showing the opening therethrough; and Fig. 5 shows a section of the plates when joined together.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout.
A indicates one of the plates, having secured thereto a head a, adapted when the device is in use to be received in the openingb in the plate B. The side of the plate B which lies toward the plateA is provided with a depression or concavity O, which surrounds and the sides of which slope inward toward the opening I) and which is outlined by a raised rim 0. .The opening I) is approximately elliptical in shape, so that the button, which is of the same sectional shape, may be locked by being turned after being inserted therein, and the concavity or depression 0, while it may be round, is preferably of the same shape as the opening Z) and with its longer axis corre sponding in position with that of the opening. Preferably, also, the opposite side of the plate B is provided with a depression D, in which when the plates are joined the head a lies, with its outer surface flush or substantially flush with the surface of the plate A.
The described form may be given to the plate by stamping it in a die orin other ways that will readily occur to those skilled in the art.
In using the device the plates are respectively fastened, as by being sewed thereto, to the garments or parts intended to be secured together, the concave side of the perforated plate being toward the head, which is set at an angle to the opening, so that when passed theret-hrough it'will turn and be locked therein. When it is desired to fasten the device, the head a is readily guided into the opening b by means of the surrounding concavity or basin, the position of which is easily ascertained by the touch, while the wear and discomfort due to the usual projection of the head are prevented by its being flush with the surface of the plate, the shank or neck of the button being of such length only as will permit of its ready insertion through the opening 1).
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A two-part garment-supporting device consisting of an elongated head and a plate having an elongated opening therein, wherein said head is adapted to be removably secured, said plate being provided, on the one side thereof, with a depression surrounding said opening and having sides sloping inward thereto, and a raised rim around such depression, whereby said head is guided into the opening in securing the parts, and on the opening in securing the parts, and on the other side, With a recess wherein the head lies between said plate and the fabric whereto it is secured, when the parts are engaged, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 5th day of October, A. D. 1898.
FREDERIO O. RAYMOND.
