MUSIC-PORTFOLIO. I No. 174,377, Patented March 7,1876;

N, PETERS, PHOTO-LlTHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON D C ,UNITEDSTATES PATENT- OFFICE.
ARTHUR MUNSON, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO. v
IMPROVEMENT IN MUSIC-PORTFOLIOS.
Specification forming .partof Letters Patent No. 174,377, dated March 7, 1876; application filed December 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. Memoir, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music Holders or Portfolios and do hereby declare the follow.-
.be suspended from the side of a piano or organ, or other like instrument.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the holder as applied to the side of a piano; Fig. 2, a detached view of same, showing the holder in itsclosed position.
A is the back, and B the front or lid, of the holder, composed of wood, paper, or other suitable material, the one A being lined or cushioned on its back face, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. 0 is astrip secured to the back A, and separatingthe leaves at the "bottom a short distance, and D is a leather or other similar elastic hinge, which secures the parts together. Attached to the back-board A at its top are hooksE, by which the-portfolio or holder is attached or suspended at the side of the instrument. Attached to the bottom front edge of the lid 13 are braces F,which are bent at such an angle as to allow the lid B to be opened a sufficient distance to have access to the music and support the lid in this position. G is a fastening secured to back A, and adapted, when the folio is closed, to engage over a button, g, on lid 'A, and secure the folio in a closed position.
The use of this device is apparent. It is suspended by hooks E to the side of a piano, &c., and the sheets of music placed therein, as shown, in ready position to the player.
Thus the music is always handy, kept in place, I
and secure from dirt or injury. The holder and music are further protected from dust, 850., bythe piano-cover, which incloses it when the piano is closed.
The hooks E and back A are vent injury to the instrument.
Thus a convenient receptacle is provided for sheet-music, which may be applied to any piano or organ, without the use of screws, nails, or other fastenings, and without in the least injuring the face or marring the beauty of the instrument.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a portfolio, the metallic check-brace F, bearing against the lower edge of the backleaf A, while its arm is attached at right angles to the lid B,- thereby affording a support to the latter when opened, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of November, A. D. 1875.
ARTHUR F. MUN SON.
