Description

Dec. 31, 1929. I. CHAMBERLIN 1,742,132
ATTACHMENT FOR HATS OR CAPS Filed Dec. 27. 1925 INVENTOR. I Cham'beflin,
ATT R EY Patented Dec. 31, 1929 our star ING CHAINIBERLIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MZSSUURI, ASSIGNOR CF THIRTY PER CENT 'IO WILLIAM KATZ, AND THIRTY PER CENT 'IQ AARON KURIANSKY, OF ST. LOUIS,
MISSOURI ATTACHMENT FOE HATS OR CAPS Application filed. December 27, 1928.
This invention relates to an attachment for hats or caps and the primary object thereof is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an attachment adapted to be detachablysecured to the underside of a hat brim for the purpose of absorbing glaring light rays, thereby preventing such rays from being reflected into the eyes of the wearer of the hat.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device as aforesaid which is light in weight, inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be readily interchanged from one hat or cap to another.
Inthe acompanying drawings in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan of a hat showing an embodiment of my invention in association therewith.
Figure 2is a top plan of my improved attachment.
Figure v3 is a fragmentary vertical section through a hat with my attachment in position thereon.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown anembodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a hat comprising a brim 2, a crown 5, and a sweat band i. A hat of this type is usually formed of flexible straw with the brini of the hat slightly downturned, but it is to be understood that my invention may be employed in connection with a hat or cap of any type or style.
For the purpose of absorbing glaring light rays and preventing the same from being refiected from the underside of the hat brim into the eyes of the wearer of the hat. I provide a light ray absorbing device 5 which is formed with an arcuate edge 6 to conform in contour with a portion of the outer edge of the hat brim 2. The absorbing device 5 is preferably formed from a flexible, translucent material and is preferably green in color in order to more readily absorb the glaring rays of sunlight. The edge of the absorbing device 5 which is opposite to the arcuate edge 6 is formed centrally thereof With a concave portion 7, which opposes the Serial No. 328,717.
forward edge of the crown 8 in order that the end 8 of the absorbing device 5 may be positioned slightly rearwardly of the forward edge of the crown. 8 in order to absorb the light rays coming from one side as well as those in front of the wearer of the hat. A protective binder. 9 may be secured in any suitable manner to thearcuate edge 6.
The absorbing device 5 is secured in position upon the brim 2 by means of a plurality of spring clips 10 each of which consists of an end portion 11 positioned flatly against the upper face of the brim 2, a shorter end portion 12 which is disposed in parallel relation to the portion 11 and is positioned against the lower face of the absorbing device 5, and an intermediate portion connecting the end portions 11 and 12.
The intermediate portion of each clip 10 consists of a wing 13 which is formed at a right angle to the end portion 11 and the inner face of which abuts against the outer edge of the brim 2 and absorbing device 5, and another wing portion 14 which is formed at a right angle to the wing portion 13 and grips the lower face and inner edge of the binder 9. As indicated at 15, the wing portion 14 is slightly offset at its point of mergence with the end portion 12.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In an attachment for hats, a light absorbing element having an arcuate edge to conform in contour with a portion of a hat brim and further having its opposite edge formed centrally thereof with a concavity to oppose the forward edge of a hat crown, the ends of said element terminating rearwardly of the forward edge of said hat crown, said element being formed with a binder to protect said arcuate edge, in combination with a plurality of clips for detachably securing said element in position, each of said clips IQU comprising a pair of end portions to respectively bear against the upper surface of said hat brim and the lower surface of said absorbing element, and an intermediate portion connecting said end portions and bearing against the outer edge of said brim and further bearing against the outer and inner edges and lower face of said binder.
2. A hat attachment comprising, a light ray absorbing element for positioning against the brim of a hat and having an arcuate edge conforming in contour to a portion of the brim, a binder for said arcuate edge, and a plurality of clips for securing said element in position, each of said clips comprising a pair of end portions to respectively bear against the upper surface of the brim and the lower surface of said element and an intermediate portion connecting said end portions and bearing against the outer edge of the brim and further bearing against the outer and inner edges and lower face of said binder.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
ING CHAMBERLIN.
