G. H. ALDRICH CAP SUPPORTER Filed Aufl. 5. 1927 Patented Feb. 14, 192s.
UNITED STA n GEORGE HENRY ALDRICH, OF HIGH POINT, -NORTH"OAROLINA.
Application led August 3,192?.4 Sera1`Nof210g386 rThe present invention relatesto caps, and
handling of the cap by the wearer after puri in mediate chase.y Theresult is that the cap the ly loses its shape and fiat-tens downen sides of the crown of the cap. n 1 It" is an .object of this invention to overcome'thesedisadvantaqeswith a simple de vice'which maybe originally placed in the cap by the manuiacturer` or dealer and which will at all times hold thecap in proper shape land which cannot become broken, packed. or lost during shipmentV and handling ofthe cap, and which after the cap is purchased. remains as apart thereof and will no tbe removed by the wearer. v
Another object of this invention is tol provide a crown supporter for the side of a cap ywhich may be made separately and independently ot the cap and may be. appliedy not only to new caps but also to caps already in use. l
Another object of this invention is to provide a substantially rectangular supporter made of leather. rubber. Celluloid. metal or the like, which is adapted to be detachablv and pivotally secured to the inner side of a cap so that in a vertical position the supporter holds the crown in sh ape or in a horizontal position "permits the cap to be flattened orffoldedfor shipment without inter- :teringl in any way whatever with the devices used in adjusting the cap to the head. n
The invention furtheraims at the provision ofa supporter or padfor the opposite sides of the crown of a` cap which is secured to the cap by a separable `fastener. one part of which is carried by the cap` the other by the supporter or pad may be entirely removed for packing. 0r the supporter may be rotated to an inoperative or horizontal position, it desired, so that the supporter kor pad may be shipped with the cap without in any wav interfering; with the packing of the cap.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be derscribed and understood yfrom the following detailed description of the .presentpr-eterred cap, showinglin dotted lines crown supporter or or pad, so that the supporter f construction, the same being "disclosed iny the i3* accompanying drawings, wherein :f-
Figure l is a side elevational view of a or vertical position ot the crown supporter,
the operative 00 Figure 2 -is 'aside' elevational view of a cap showingtin dotted lines the inoperative or horizontal 'positionfoiu the supporter,
` Figure?) is crossesectional view taken on line 3 6. Fig. 1.*looking in the direction of the` arrows showing the waythe crown supporter is secured to the side of a cap,
Figure llis a cross-sectional view of'a cap' takengon line 4 4, Fig. ulookingy in the direction of the arrows, showing-the the inside ot the cap. .a partof the sweat band or inner lining' of the (cap .bein g broken away, and
Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view pad as `it appears from i of the crown supporter .or padV showing ,a`
complementary part of the fastening' means. Referring; to thedrawing.' 5 designates the crown of n a cap' which is ot conventional form'having a sweat band or lining 7. The crow-n 'at its forward lower edge is provided with ka visor 6 over which the front portion ot the crown 5 is adapted to extend. The natural shape of the visor 6 or the crown is round and that ot the sides of the cap smooth. and erect as shown in Figs. l and 3. lnV order to maintain the crown in proper torna at all times, two or more supporters 10 are .fitted in the opposite inner sides of the crown oi. the cap and are of such dept and width kto properly support the crown.V The supporter 10 is preferably substantially rectangular or keystone shape with a roundyed outwardly7 curved upper ed ge. downwardlike. and may be covered with the same material out of whichthe cap is made, if desired. Said supporter isv ol. such a size as i to insure proper ventilation and to prevent the pocketine` of dust and the like in the crown. In. case ot heavier material the supporter mayT be provided with perforations, if desired.
To hold the supporter or pad in place, one
or more separable fasteners are used. Part 9 of the separable fastener is secured to the supporter or pad preferably in the center thereof and the other part 8 is secured substantially midway of th'einner side ofthe crown so as to detachably and rotatably secure the supporter or padpto the'opposite "inner side of the cap o r crown/as shown best understood that two or more such supfporters or pads lO will be used however the description' of one will suce'for all.
It will be noted that when putting the supporter or pad l0 inplace it is only necessary to place the lower edge of the supporter between theisweat band or lining Tand the sideof the crown 5 then snap Ithe fastener or4 pad 1G over course it is to be understood that the cap the part 9 of the part 8. V0f
may be bought With the supporter or pad l0 already secured therein or the supporter or 'pad may be bought separately and attached to an ordinary rscribed above. f the horizontal cap yafter 'theunanner de- By rotating the supporter to position'shown in Fig. '2, the cap may be packed yinto limited lspaceand shipped in large quantities Without injury tothe headpiece.
It Will be appreciated-'that Athiscap `supplace they will raise the lsides of erect position and will hold the cap or crowny 0f course it isv porter or `pad 10 may be quickly inserted or detached from the cap after itis manu factured and may be made at small cost. Itis apparent that when the devices are in the cap to in its 'true shape. it is ofcourse understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of size, construction, and design of the above specially described embodiment of the invention Without. departing` from the spirit of the. vinvention thereof7 such changes *being restricted onl f by the scope of the following claims What is claimed is n l. In a cap, aci-own, elements of separable fastener means secured to the inner opposite sides of said crown7 respectively, *stiifening elementsl each comprising a qi'iadrilaterallyshaped flexible sheet having one dimension Vgreater than the other, a cooperating` "fastening;l element secured substantially centrally of each sheet whereby said stiifening' elements may be detachably and rotatably'secured to opposite sides of saidv crown'asand for the purpose described.
2. ln `a stiffener for headwear, a` substantially quadrilaterally-shaped memberr` `of flexible material 'having one transverse'diinension substantially greater than the'other, and an element of a detachable fastener secured to said stiflener substantially adjacent its central'portion, Wherebythestiifener may be rotatably secured to headwear.
In testimony whereof l afflxiny signature. GEORGE AIJlllilfALDRlCI-I.
