"The :present invention relates, generally, to improvements in cosmetic boxes Vanity cases; andthe inventionhas reference, more particularly, to "a 'novel means for retaining a compactb'asein'a vanity caseor'other holding means insuch amanner thatvit is ifirmly secured therein and yet can be easily and. quickly removed and replaced by a similar compact base. i v
1'0 This invention has for'its principal object to provide a simple, ineXpensive'and easily and quickly manufactured construction whereby a compact base ean be easily and quicklylinserted'in or-removed from a vanity H case or other holder; and to this 'end is provided a 'frame'of sheet metal which defines an opening around whose edges is provided a flange which is concavely curved 'to form a recess into andout ofwhich the compact base 'can'beeasily'pressed'or snapped.
Another object of-the invention is to provide a, holding frame adapted for securing the S. compact base against rotatable displace mentor shifting-relative ts the vanity case '2 in which it is used with attendant advantages also hereinafter set forth.
Various other objects and advantages of theinvention will be'obvious' from the following particular description of a vanity box embodying the invention or from an inspection of the)accompanying-drawings; and the invention also consists in certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there is shown for purposes of illustration one form of vanity box embodying the inventlon, in
which: v p a Figure 1 1s-a'plan view of an open vanity case showing the'inter or;

There is enough give or spring in said frame 14;,par-
ticularly at said bezel '19 and flange 20, to permit said base. 12 to be snapped into and out of place to and from the channel of said flange 20. The edge of said basel2 is turned over inwardly to a little extent and serves to provide for smooth movement of said base 12 into or out of the channeled flange 20 of'the frame 14:, said turned edge also serving to hold'or aid in holding the cosmetic cake 13 in'place. When the base 12 is mounted in the flange 20 of the frame 14, and said frame 1 1 is'mounted' in the bodysection 11, then the bottom of said base 12 rests on the interior face of said body section .11, as shown in Figures 7 and 8, and the'base is held thereby from displacement'f'rom the channeled flange 20 even when extreme pressure is applied as in rubbing the cosmetic cake 13 with a powder puif. The angular form of the body section il'and'frame 1&1 keeps the latter. from rotational moveme'n't when a powder puff is.
rubbed around on the cosmetic cake and the frictional engagement of the base 12 in said flange 20'keeps said base from turning. The
' sections 10 and 11 and the frame 1 1 can be other than the hexagonal shape illustrated in ,the drawings, for example, they may be octagonal, triangular, square or round, in which lattercase the frictional engagement of the frameedge flanges with the flange of the body section Will keep the frame from turning;
:baid frame l lhas anotch 21 formed therein at one of its lateral edges to accommodate the riveted inner end of the catch stud 22 attajched to said bodysection 11 at a point 0p 7 posite the hinge connection with said cover section- 10, the latter having a clasp 23 for fitting oversaid stud 22 to secure the case or box in the closed condition.
or aipin or other pointed instrument for re moving said frame 14 when desired, as for example, for the purpose of removing the compact and base 12 for replacement. Said cover section 10 is provided with a frame'24 which is somewhat similar to said frame 14 and which servesto hold a mirror'25 in place in said coversection. When the box orcase is closjedthere is suflicient space between the compact cake 13 and said mirror 25 to hold a powderpufl.

' V compact basesor mirrors can be thus secured will-be understood that devices other than Said notch 21 serves alsofor the insertion of a knife point can hold a mirror, the frame 24 can retain compact base, or either one can hold or reprovided with a decoration which' will beex- 1 posed through the opening left in the body.
It isalso to be understood that said vanity case or box, the frames thereof and other parts, and said cosmetic compact base, any or all of them" can be made of sheet metal, celluloid,or other suitable material; and also that the channel shaped flange 20 can extend from I said bezel 19 in the opposite direction from that shown, and to be contained in the latter,
with its channel, of course, facingtoward the opening.
Having thus described claim:
my invention, I
1. In a vanity case, in combination, a body section having a peripheral flange extending from one face thereof to define a casing interior and a frame having flange like sides adapted to fit within the flange of said body section, said frame having a central opening about which extends a channeled flange adaptedto. spring and yield to thereception or displacement of an article havingthe same general contour as the bottorrf'of the channel,
of said channeled flange.
.2. Ina vanity case, in combination, abody from one face thereof; to define ajcasing in terior; a frame havingflange like sides adapted to lit with frictional engagement Within and againstthe flange of said body section, said frame having a central opening, a channeled flange depending from themargins of said opening, and said channelled. flange be-,
Also the body section 11 can i I .1.00 section havinga peripheral flange extending 3. In a vanity case, incombination, a body a section having side flanges extending from one face thereof to define a casing interior; a
I frame having flange like sides-adapted tofit between the flanges of said'body section, and having a central opening about which extends a channelled flange adapted to spring 7 and yield to receive an article having the same general contour as the bottom-of said channel of said channelled flange; and a cosmetic compact including a base having-ea contour adapted to fit in said channel and'between the I While I have described the use of said i edges thereof.,
adapted to holda cosmetic compact andbase',
or other article, andconsistingofa mainv portion defining an opening, a bezel extends ing from and. about gilopeningmn enhannel shaped flange extending from said bezel,
shaped flange extending from and about said opening and being resilient and springy and thereby adapted to admit the passage of an article past its edges and into the channel thereof.
6. In combination with a section of a van- 'ity case, a frame carried thereby adapted to hold a cosmetic compact and base, or other article, and consisting of a main portion defining an opening, and a channel shaped flange extending from and about said opening, said flange being resilient and springy and thereby adapted to admit the passage of an article past its edges and into the channel thereof.
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of August, 1928.
