v'The present invention relates, -generally, to improvements 1n cosmetic boxes or vanity cases; and the invention has reference, more particularly, 130 novel Vmeans for removably 1 .'5 retain-.ing a rouge pan .or compact base Aor both within ,a vanity case and vfor .carrying an adjustable mirror in ,such manner as to enable :its ruse while at the Sametime permittingmse of 'bot-h a powder compact and La 1 0 :ron ,e cake.
is invention has for its principal object to provide asimple, inexpensive and read ily `man-ufaetured construction .of vanity box whereby .fa ronge pan t.or compact'base or both ,t5 can he feasily .and .quickly inserted in or removedA from such vanity fcase or other holder while .-at the sa-me time :providing means for Isnpporting -an1irr o1'., yand to this tend there is provided a 'frame member comprising a A'#20 sheet fmetalstanrping which is adapted to be vsecured within the vanity box :and which defines opening, around the edges of which is provided a ange 'for -frictional'ly engagin g and securing a rouge `pan holder, said ,25 4frame member having a mirror hingedly connected thereto.
Various objects .and .advantages of the invention will he ob. 'ons from the following detailed description of a vanity :box embodyingthe Iprinciples of this invention taken lien 'connection with the accompanying `draw-- ings; andthe invention .also consists in certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of par-ts hereinafter. set Aforth #and claimed. f
In the accompanying drawings there is shown for lpurposes of fiiiustration one forni .of vanity box, embodying the 4features of the invention, :in which.:
fig. fl is a :plan view of kan open vvanity case `shmzvingthe interior; y v Y Fig.` 'f2 is a view similar to Fig. i Abut illustra-testfile rouge pan and holder removed from :the v lity-case;,and v g. :3 is a ,central sectional Iview of .the va` ty ease in closed position.
iiar characters offre-ference are :employedin all of lthe (hereinabove .described views :to 'indicate `cornespending parts.
= :5.0 'of the principles of this -invsaid sections constitutes va cover 10 and the vention .there is shown. in the gures ofthe 'i drawings a simple form. of cosmetic box or' vanity case, comprising a pair of hingedly connected sections so arranged that one of `5 5 .other a body 11 upon which the cover closes. In boxes or cases of this character, which are designedto serve the purpose of cosmetic boxes or vanity cases, it is ,desired to retain therein a compact and rouge cake or refills thereof, ,of well known type. 'The com'- pact .comprises a-,base 1-2 of ,-sheet'rnetal of disc-like form and whichmay be of. shallow saucer shape if desi-red, on which is mounted la Asuitable filling or .cosmeticin lcake for solid form (not shown). The rouge or; refill comprises a pan 13 which may also be of shallow saucer shape if desired on which is adapted to be provided a suitable rouge cake 19.
The compact base 12 is removably carried ,7.9 by a retaining frame 1 4 having aperiphera-l flange 15 that frictionally engagesthe inner l walls o f the body section 11., RetainingY frame 1 4 maybe removed `from the body section llas for the purpose of replacing a compact by inserting the point of a knife or other Vinstrument, through a notch 16r providedin this retaining frame. l The edge of the rouge pan 1 3 is preferably turned over lnwardlyslightly ,to provide a au .curved fiangialedge ,that is frictionally `retained within a= channel shaped flange 17 formed on a downwardlylextending bezel18 provided on a rouge pan holderlQO.; and the invention relates to fa novel construction of e5 'frame member '21 which is attached to the cover `section i0, and into which andv out of` which Vframe member the rouge` pan holder 20, together with the rouge panl 13 can be' yeasily andquicklyinserted or removed. so 'Saidcover section 1() vand body section 11 are of [sheetmetal and, as shown, are prefer'- 4 ably of polygonalshape having, respectively, iianges 22 and 23 which meet and register with eachother when the ,boxY lor casek'is closed. Said cover section 10 and E'19Std-Y seeton 1 1 .maybe concave on their inner faces toieonforln to the saucer vShaped rouge pan 13 and compact base 12. respec tively.k
.Said iframernember L21 is ,of polygonal `out- Loo line corresponding tothe shape of the cover vsection and fits within and against the flange 22 of said cover section. Frame member 21 is formed with an inner flange 25 extending lat right angles to the main portion of the frame-member. Flange 25 is curved along its outer free edge so as to conform to the inner concave surface of the cover section 10. At the center of each of a plurality of opposite straight portions of the ilange22 .of the cover section is provided an inwardl punched projection 24 which is spaced rom thein-ner p concave surface of the cover, portion 10 at a sullicient distance to accommodate the frame member 21. n The projections 24 serve to hold the free edge of flange 25 against the inner' surface of the cover section 10,-thereby rigidly and securely retaining the frame member 21 .Within this cover section. VFrame member 21 has hinge lugs formed integral therewith. Lugs 3() are' positioned adjacent the `flange 22 Vof the cover section and liingedly ycarry a frame31 whichserves to lhold a mirror 32.
Frame 31 is illustrated as having alug 33 which may be used' in turning the mirror 32 about its hinged connection with the trame 'member 21. Mirror 32 may be'turiied outwardly of the cover section lO to-'any angle up to substantiallylSO degrees for use as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, or it may be turned into this cover section ,asillustrated in F ig. 3
When not needed.v Y l,
The rouge pan holder 20 is of polygonal outlinev corresponding to the shape of the frame member 21 and has flangial sides 26-which lit within and against the flange 25 of the frame Y member, whereby the holder is held within the latter by friction'and yet can be easily re- Vmoved and reinserted as by means ora handle 27 formedon the holder 20. i Upon removing rthe holder 2O together with rouge pan 13 from the frame member, the rouge pan may readily be replaced by another-such pan by merely Apushing the pan 13 out oli the flange 17- and snapping another in place. There `is enough springin the holder 20, and particularly' at `moval and insertion of pans 13.
' neledf flange 17 even when extreme pressure is applied as in rubbing the rouge calce with f ajpowder puli.y Also the'compact base 12 ,similarly *rests against theinterior face or the'body section 11 when the retaining frame 14 is positioned -Within'the body section 11. The angular form of the cover-and body Lsection prevents anyrotational inovement'o1 the holder l20 or retaining frame 14 with respect to these sections. G5
VSections 10 and-11, frame member21, holder 2O and retaining frame 14 may be other than the hexagonal shape illustrated in the drawings, for example, they may be octagonal, triangular, square'or round.
Notch 16 accommodates the riveted inner end of a catch stud28 attached-to the body section 11 at a point opposite the hinged connection with said cover section 10, the latter having a clasp .34 orlitting`. over said ,stud2'8 to secure the case" orbex in closedpositio'n.
When the box or ca'se is closed there is sulficientspace between the compact cake carried by base 12 and mirror frame 31 to hold a powder puff: Also there is suliicient space between the rouge cake carried by pan 13 and mirror frame 3.1 .to hold Ian additional powder or rougepul'@` 4.4; u
Vliile the frame'member 21, holder-20, and retaining frame li'have beendescribed as means for retaining afmirror, a rouge'panv and a compact base, it willbe apparent-that device'sfother than thosespecilied can be thusly secured. Thus, these membersinay be used to interchangeably retain anyef-,the above articles or, Jfor example, aidecorative medallion or (ornamental disc `or' plate. Also, the cover and bodysections may bejin the 'form oi open frames withfouter, retaining edges for retaining the compactrbase and rouge pan from endwise displacement, yin which case thebottoin oli' the: compact :base
and `rouge pan can lbe provided with a vdecorration which.l will be exposed Vthrough the openings left in the case or box.
' It is also to Vbeunderstood that saidlvanity case or box, the frames thereon/and other parts, and said compactvbasea'ndrouge pan, any or all of them can be made of sheet metal, Celluloid, or lothersuitablem'aterial. y f' As many changes couldbe madein;the
above construction and many apparently widely dillerent embodiments yof thisin'ventien could be made without departingffroin the scopethercof, it isiintended that 'all'mat- 'ter contained in the above'y description ,orL shownv in the .accompanyingdrawings .sha-ll be interpreted as illustrative aiidnotf in a linfi'itingfsense. f i
