This invention reiates to cosmetic handling and applying devices and relates more particu-- larly to a device for containing and applying mascara, rouge, etc.

5 invention is to provide a practical, eiective and very convenient device of the character mentioned.

l Another object of this invention is to provide a cosmetic applicator containing a supply of 10' cosmetic and an easily accessible and readily manipulable brush for applying the cosmetic.

Another object of this invention is to provide a cosmetic containing and applying device of `the character mentioned that may beused and car ried about without danger of soiling the hands, clothing, etc. and without the loss of the cosmetic.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character 'mentioned in' which the brush is supported in a novel and eective 30 containtwo supplies of cosmetics diieringI in shade or character and embodying means for removing the excess cosmetic from the brush iollowing its use, whereby the brush may be subsequently employed to apply either of the cosmetics. 3 A further object of this invention is to provide a cosmetic 4applying device of thecharacter mentioned that embodies a mirror associated with the` bodyoi the device to be available for use `whenv the brush. is being employed to apply the cosmetic.

The improved cosmetic applicator of the present invention may be said to comprise, generally, a body i9 having a handle Il, a. reilecting element or mirror i2 on the body lli, aninsert or ller i3 20 oi cosmetic replaceably contained in the body I6 and a brush Il removably carried by the body l0 and handle ii for applying the cosmetic.

The body il) is provided to contain the cosmetic insert or filler i3 and to carry the mirror I 2 and 25 the other elements of the device. In the preferred construction the body l0 includes an outer member l5 and an inner member I6. 'I'he outer body member l5 is a generally cylindrical part formed of sheet metal or the like and nished 30 or plated as desired. The invention preferably includes a cover 23 for closing the upper side of the body I0. As illustrated in the drawings the cover 23 may be a disc-like member having a suitably shaped or ornamented upper side. The cover 23 is pivotally or swingably secured to the upper wall of the inner body member I6 by a hinge pin 24. The hinge pin 24 is shiftably and turnably received in registering openings in the cover 23 and the upper wall of the member I6 and projects down into the member I6. The opposite ends of the pin 24 are provided with heads and the upper head of the pin cooperates with the upper side of the cover 23. A helical spring 15 surrounds the in- ,wardly projecting portion of the pin 213 and is arranged under compression between the under surface of the member l5 and the lower head of the pin 26 to exert an inward force on the pin and the cover 23. The cover 23 is proportioned so that its marginal or peripheral portions overlie the upper side of the body member i6 when in the closed position.

Means is provided for yieldingly or releasably retaining the cover 23 in the closed position. A curved or concentric downwardly projecting ridge or flange 23 is provided on the under side of the cover 23 and is adapted to cooperate with the inner surface of the wall i9. The iiang 2B is of the greatest thickness diametrically opposite the pivotal connection of the cover 23 with the body It) and tapers away from this point to disappear or merge with the under side of the cover 23 adjacent the pivotal connection of the cover with the body I0. When the cover .23 is in the closed position the flange 26 cooperates with the wall I9 to hold the cover closed. When the cover 23 is deliberately or intentionally pivoted to the open position the tapering flange 23 rides over the upper surface of the body l0, the spring 25 yielding to allow for the required upward tilting of the cover 23. When the cover 23 is re# turned to its closed position the iiange 26 automatically snaps into cooperation with the internal surface of the wall I9 under the action of the spring 25 acting on the cover 23.

The mirror I2 has its lower surface resting against the iiange Il and the flange serves to prevent outward movement and displacement of the mirror. It is preferred to arrange a thin metal shim 28 against the inner or upper face of the mirror I2 to protect the silvering of the mirror and to prevent breakage of the mirror.- When the inner body member I6 is in place'its lower sides or edges cooperate with the shim 28 to hold the mirror I2 rmly in place. It is to be observed that the mirror I2 closes the lower side of the body I0 and is of substantial diameter. The body Ill provided with the laterally projecting handle Il .and carrying the mirror I2 on its under side resembles in appearance a typical hand mirror when viewed as in Fig. 1.

The insert or filler i3 of cosmetic is contained in the body I3 to be conveniently accessible and to be protected against loss and breakage. The iiller I3 includes a holder or cup 29 having a closed bottom and an open upper side or top. The cup 29 is proportioned and shaped to rather closely t within the inner wall I9 of the body member I3. When the cup 29 is in place its bottom rests on the mirror shim 28 and its upper edge is below the upper surface of the body I0 to be clear of the ange 23 on the cover 23. The `side wall of the cosmetic cup 29 has a lateral opening or gap 30 registering with the gap 22 in the inner body member i3. It is preferred to provide means for removably holding the cosmetic cup 29 in place to prevent its accidental displacement from the body I0. In the construction illustrated the wall I9 has indentations 3i spaced at opposite sides of the gap 22 and the side wall of the cosmetic cup 23 has projections 32 cooperating with the indentations 3l to removably hold the cup in The cup 29 contains a suitable or selected cosmetic' 33. 'I'he cup 29 may contain cake mascara, cream mascara, eye shadow, cream or cake rouge. face powder in cake form, etc. The cosmetic 33 may entirely ll or occupy the cup 29 with the exception of a space or socket 34 molded or otherwise formed in the cosmetic. The socket 3d extends radially inwarclvfrom the gap 30 to` adjacent the center of the cup 29. The socket 30 is provided to receive a part of the brush I4 as will be subsequently described. It will be observed that the cosmetic 33 is entirely enclosed and protected when the cover 23 is in its closed position and is freely accessible for use when the coveris opened. Y

The brush ld is provided to facilitate the application of the cosmetic 33. The brush I includes an elongate handle 33 and tufts of bristles 31, or the like, on the inner end of the handle. In the preferred construction the bristles 3l are set or secured in a holder 33 and the holder is set in a slot 39 in the` inner end of the handle 36. 'I'he inner part of the brush handle 33 is adapted to be received in the gaps i3, 22 and 30 so that the handle and the bristles 31 may project into the socket 33 in the cosmetic 33. When 'the brush i5 is in its normal position the handle 36 is arranged longitudinally at the upper side of the body handle i i. The outer portion of the brush handle 33 is reduced in size or diameter to leave or provide an outwardly facing annular shoulder 3B. Itis preferred to make the brush handle 33 cylindrical and to provide a groove il in the flat upper side of the body handle I i to partially' receive the bmah handle 33. vThe groove il! is. shaped 43 may be press-fitted on an end part of the handle 36. The cap 43 may be generally spherical in shape and its inner side is provided with a socket 56 toreceve the brush handle 36 with substantial clearance. The end portion of the brush handle 36 projecting into the cap 43 is reduced in diameter to provide an outwardly facing shoulder 44. A washer 45 is shiftable on the reduced end portion of the brush handle 36 and is adapted to engage against the shoulder 44. Yielding means or spring means is provided in the cap 43 to assist in removably retaining the brush I4 in position on the body I0 and handle II. This spring means may comprise a body 46 of resilient material, such as rubber, rubber composition, or the like, provided on the reduced end portion of the handle 36to occupy a substantial portion of the socket 5t? The washer 45 bears against thesouter or exposed face of the resilient body 46 and is adapted to cooperate with the outer end of the handle Il. I

The parts are proportionedso thatthe resilient body 46 is under compression when the brush I4 is in position with its shoulder 4i! in cooperation with the shoulder 42. The resiliency of the rubber body 4 6 serves to maintain the shoulder 40 in secure engagementrwith the shoulder Y42 to retain the brush I4 in place. As best illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the washer 45 bears against the end-of the handle Il and is clear of the shoulder 44 when the shoulders 40 andr42 are in engagement and the resilient' body 46 is under compression. The engagement of the washer 45 with the end of the handle II and the cooperation of the shoulders 4B and '12 assists in retaining the. brush lI4 in place on the device. When the brush I4 is in its normal position the outer end portion of the body handle Il is-received in the socket 50 and the cap 43 may engage the handle l I to prevent the brush from being accidentally displaced from the handle II and the body III.

To remove the brush I4 an inward force may be applied to the brush handle 36 to further compress the resilient body 46. and thus free the shoulder 40 from the shoulder 42 so that the brush handle 36 may be moved laterally or upwardly to where the shoulder 4I! will clear the shoulder 42. Another manner of removing the brush I4 is to merely exert a downward force on the cap 43 to move or pivot the handle I4 on the handle II to move the shoulder 40 out of engagement with the shoulder 42 and thus free the brush for removal. To re-apply the brush I4 to the body I0 and handle II the handle 36 is passed through the gaps I8, 22 and 30 to introduce the bristles 31 to the socket 34 and the handle 36 is entered or started in the groove 4I. force is then. applied to the cap 43 to compress the resilient body. 46 against the end of the handle Il through the medium of the washer 45 and thus bring the handle 36 to the position where its shoulder 46 may swing or snap into engagement with Athe shoulder 42.

The bristles 31 may be brushed across the face of the cosmetic 33 to receive a suitable amount of the cosmetic and the rbrush I4 may be employed to apply the cosmetic. Where circumstances vmake it necessary or desirable the mirror I2 may be utilized as an aid in applying the cosmetic.

The cover 23 may be closed and the device may be held and manipulated in such a manner that the mirror I2 is an aid in the application of the cosmetic by means of the brush I 4. After use the brush I4 may be easily and quickly re-secured to the body Ill and handle II in the man. ner described above, to be immediately available for subsequent use. When the cosmetic 33 becomes exhausted or when it is desired to replace. or exchange the cosmetic the ller I3 may be removed from the body I0 and a new or `replacement cosmetic filler inserted in the body.

Fig. 8 of the drawings illustrates a slightly vmodied form of brush holding or retaining means. In this form of theinvention the above described rubber body 41 is replaced by a helical ranged in the socket 50 of the cap v43 and surrounds the reduced end portion of the brush .handle 46. The spring 5I is under compression of the handle. 36 serves to prevent 'tilting of thev washer 45. The spring 5I arrangedunder compression between the bottom wall of the socket 50 and the washer 458L has the same function as the rubber body 46, that is, it yieldingly urges the washer 45 against the outer end of the body handle II to maintain the shoulders 40 and 42 in engagement and thus removably hold the brush handle I4 on the body-handle Il.

Figs. 9 to 11, inclusive, illustrate a form of the invention embodying a cosmetic insert or filler I3Il carrying a plurality'of supplies of cosmetics. A

The holder 60 may be removably retained in the body I in the same manner as the above described cup 29. The side wall of the holder 60 has an opening or gap 3l)a registering with the gap 22. A raised web portion or partition 6I is provided in the holder 60. The partition 6l may be an integral part of the holder 60 extending upwardly from the bottom of the holder and joining the side wall of the holder. The partition 6I is diametrically opposite the gap 3l)n and is radial, extending from adjacent the center of the holder to the side wall of the'holder. The opposite side walls of the partition 6| are preferably fiat and-substantially parallel..

In accordance with the invention means is provided on the top or upper side of the partition 6l to clean the brush I4 or to remove excess cosmetic from the bristles 31 of the brush. This `means comprises a plurality or series of wiping or scraping edges 62 formed by making multiplicities of cuts 63 in the top wall of the partition 6i and bending the material of said wall upwardly at corresponding edges of the cuts. The edges E2 are such that they effectively scrape or remove cosmetic from the bristles 31 when the bristles are drawn or wiped across the top of the partition 6|. The cosmetic thus removed from the brush bristles 31 may fall through the cuts 63 into the hollow partition 6l or may be wiped from the top of the partition.

The inner holders or cups 5B'are provided to contain cosmetics and are carried within the holder E0. The cups 58 are segmental in shape having curved outer walls conforming with the side wall of the holder 60 and having straight vertical inner walls 64. These inner walls B4 of the cups 58 cooperate with the side walls of the partition 5i. movably press-fitted in the holder 60. It will be seen that the engagement of the straight walls 64 with the sides of the partition 6I holds the cups 58 spaced apart, leaving a space or socket 65 for receiving the inner portion of the brush I4 and the brush bristles 31. The cups 58 are open topped and may contain cakes or supplies of cosmetics. In accordance with the invention the cups 58 may contain cosmetics of diierent shades, types or characters.

The operation or use ofthe form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 9, and 1l is substantially the same as that of the previously described form of the invention. The brush i6 may be readily removed from the body I0 and employed to apply the cosmetics contained in the cups 58. Following the use of the brush for applying the cosmetic contained in one.of the cups 58 the brush bristles 31 may be wiped or drawn across the edges 62 for the purpose of removing the remaining or excess cosmetic from the brush bristles. This leaves the `brush clean for the subsequent application of the cosmetic contained in the other cup 53, if this is desired. Thus the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 9, 10 and 1l contains or provides two diil'erent cosmetics and an eiective means for readily applying the same The cosmetic cups 6U may be re-` Having described only typical preferred forms and applications of my invention, I do not wish to be restricted or limited to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any variations or modications that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claims:

Having described my invention, I claim:

1 A device of the character described including a body, a cosmetic container in the body, a brush removably carried by the body for applying the cosmetic, and means on the body for removing the cosmetic from the brush.

2. A device of the character described comprising a body containing a cosmetic, a handle secured to the body andprojecting therefrom, a brush for applying the cosmetic'and having a handle extending along a face of the body handle, and means removably retaining the brush' handle on the body handle.

3. A device of the character described comprising a body containing a cosmetic and having a lateral opening to its interior, a handle projecting laterally from the body, a brush having a handle adapted to extend along the body handle and bristle means adapted to be received in said opening, and means removably securing the brush in the position where its handle is held valong a side of the body handle and its bristle means is received in said opening. l

4. A device of the character described comprising a cup-like body having a lateral opening, a cosmetic holder in the body having a lateral opening aligned with the rst named opening, a lateral handle projecting from the body, a brush for applying the cosmetic comprisinga handle and bristle means on the handle, and releasable means retaining the brush in the position where its handle lies against the first named handle and its bristle means is receivedin said openings.

5. A device of the character described comprising a cup-like body having a lateral opening, a.

.cosmetic holder in the body having a lateral opening aligned with the iirst named opening, a supply of cosmetic in the holder having a socket communicating with said lateral openings, a handle projecting from the body at the opening therein, a brush for applying the cosmetic including a handle, and bristle means on an end of the handle, and means for removably holding the brush in the position where its bristle means is in said socket and its handle lies against the rst named handle in substantially parallel relation thereto.

'7. A cosmetic applying device including a. body having a lateral opening, a supply of cosmetic inthe body having a socket communicating with said opening, an elongate handle projecting from the body, a brush for applying the cosmetic comprising an elongate handle and bristle means on an end of the brush handle, and releasable means retaining the brush in a position where the brush handle lies longitudinally against a side of the rst named handle and extends into said opening rst named handle and extends into said opening' and the bristle means is received inthe said socket, said releasable means comprising engaging shoulders on said handles, and resilient means .carried by the brush handle and cooperating with the said rst named handle to hold the shoulders in engagement.

9. A cosmetic applying device including a body having a lateral opening, a supply of cosmetic in the body having a socket communicating with said opening, an elongate handle projecting from the body, a brush for applying the cosmetic comr prising an elongate handle and bristle means on an end of the brush handle, and releasable means retaining the brush in a position where the brush handle lies longitudinally against a side of the first .named handle and extends into said opening and the bristle means is received in the said socket, said resilient means comprising en-v gaging oppositely facing shoulders on the said handles, a shiftable part on the brush handle bearing longitudinally against .the said rst named handle, and resilient means urging said part against said first named handle.

10. A cosmetic applying device including a body having a lateral opening, a supply of cosmetic in the body having a socket communicating with said opening, an elongate handle projecting from the body, a brush for applying the cosmetic comprising an elongate handle and bristle means on an end of the brush handle, and releasable means retaining the brush in a position where the brush handle lies longitudinally against a side of the first named handle and extends into said opening and the bristle means in received in the said socket, said resilient means comprising engaging oppositely facing shoulders on the said .-handles,

a shitfable part on the brush handle bearing longitudinally against the outer end of the rst, named handle, and a body oi rubber on the brush handle urging the said part against the end of said ilrst named handle.

' 13. A device for applying cosmetic'comprising a hollow body having on opentop and a lateral handle, and means removably holding the handle of the brush against 'a side of the first named handle to pass through said openings so that the bristle means is received in the holder.

14. A cosmetic applying device including a body having a lateral opening, a supply of cosmetic in the body having a socket communicating with ,said opening, an elongate handle projecting from the body, a brush for applying the cosmetic comprising an elongate handle and bristle means on'an end of the brush handle, and releasable means retaining the brush in a position -where the brush handle lies longitudinally against a side of the first named handle and extends into said opening and"the bristle means is received in the said socket, said resilient means comprising en'- gaging oppositely facing shoulders on the. said handles, a shiftable part on the brush handle bearing longitudinally against the outer end of the first named handle, and a spring urgingfsaid part against the end of the iirst named handle.

15. A device of the character described comprising a body, a holder in the body,- a partition in the body, cosmetic containers in the holder spaced apart by the partition to leave a space in the holder, the body having an opening aligned with the space, a brush removably carried by the body and having bristle .means received in said wall, cosmetic containers arranged in the b'ody Y to rest on-the bottom wall and-spaced yapart to leave aspace in the body, the side wall of the body having an opening communicating with the space, a brush having.. a bristle head, and means removably holding the brush on the -body where it extends through said opening to have its bristle head in said space,

17. A cosmeticl applying device comprising a body, cosmetic containers in the body spaced apart to leave a space in the body, the wall .of the body having on opening communicating with the space, a handle on the body projecting outwardly in augment with the space and opening, a brush having a handle, and means removably securing the brush in the position where,it extends through the opening into the space and projects outwardly from the body to have its handle in substantially parallel relation to the body handle.v
