Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIQE.
WILLIAM H. THOMAS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOS'lNG-STICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,373, dated February 8, 1876; application filed January 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. THOMAS, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Composing-Sticks,of which the following is a specification:
My invention is designed to increase the durability of the composing-stick; and my invention consists in a certain formation of the adjustable knee, by which it is reversible, and adapted to present either of two faces for the customary wear of the compositors fingers.
Figure 1 isa perspective View of a composing-stick embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the adjustable and reversible knee.
A is the case of the stick, and B the adjustable knee, between which and the edge a the type is set up.
It is well known that in use the corner X of the knee wears away, so that it is impossible to afford proper support for the typeto the extreme edge of the stick, and to give double the durability to the stick I construct the knee B so that when worn at one corner, another side, b, may be presented which has a perfect corner. The interior sides of the knee are V-shaped, as shown, having beveled faces I) I), for alternate connection with the fastening-clamp, and beveled faces b b, to alternately present the desirable thin upper edge near the type. The clamp O, by means of its lip c, embraces the lower part of the case A, and its fasteningsorew I) secures the knee at any required point of adjustment. Instead of the customary milled large head for the screw, I insert in the enlarged end shown the ring E, which has suflicient leverage for the operation of the screw, and the capacity of lying close to the stick, so as to be out of the way of the fingers of thecompositor. ,The two sides b alternately face the type.
I olaim The combination of case A, clamp (l, and
knee B, the latterhaving two type-faces, b,
and two inclined faces, b b, for the fastening-clamp, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM H. THOMAS.
