IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 72,703, dated January 25, 1876; application filed July 28, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. CARTER, of Hartsville, in the county of Bartholomew and State ot'Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oravat and 001- lar Attachments, of which the following is a specification:

The subject of my invention is a neck-tie formed with loops adapted to engage over the ends of an attachment, which is formed with ahutton-hole adapted to fit a button of peculiar form.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of the device applied to a paper collar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tie alone. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cravat attachment. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the button. Fig. 5 is a rear view ofthe tie, showing cord-loops instead of the pocket-loops illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 6' is a perspective view'of an attachment adapted for use in connection with such cord-loops. Fig. 7 is a front View of the combined tie and attachment.

The button B is constructed with a doubly conical head, b, adapted to hold the two ends 0 c of the paper collar 0 in close contact with the central flange D, which separates the collar ends from the neck-bands of the shirt. The head has two laterally-projecting wings, e 6, adapted to pass through the ends of the button-hole, and toengage within corresponding notches formed to receive them in the ends of the button-hole of the era-vat attachment F. I is the base-flange of the button.

The attachment F consists of a plate or web, Y which may beformed of enameled leather, or

it may be made of pasteboard covered at back with cloth, to make it strong and durable, and in front with velvet or silk, or any material which will impart a finished appearance, as well as giving it the necessary strength. The ends f f of this attachment are adapted to fit beneath the points of the collar O. In the center of this attachment is a button-hole, G, formed at its extremities with notches 9, adapted to tit over the lateral Wings 6 c of the button, so as to hold the attachment securely in place.

It will be apparent that a button constructed withthe doubly-conical head and wings, as above described, is adapted to receive such an attachment and hold it correctly in position, and to mask the button-hole, so as to give a neat and tasty finish, while at the same time the attachment may be removed with great ease by simply pressing it 01f the button with the fingers.

The cravat or tie A may be of any preferred external form to suit the taste.

It is provided at back with two loops, at a, adapted to fit over the extremities or points ff. These loops may have the form of pockets, as illustrated in Fig. 2, or may be made of simple cords, as shown in Fig. 5. If loops of cord are used the attachment is notched to receive them, as illustrated in Fig. 6.

The attachment can be taken out of the loops and replaced at any time by the wearer.

The objects of the invention are to afford a neat and tasty finish to the tie when in position, also, to permit the attachment to be readily removed and replaced when it becomes worn or soiled by use, or in putting on and off.

The attachment is of very cheap construction, so that many of them may be used to wear with a single bow or" tie, the latter being made of more costly material.

It is the intention to furnish the attachmentto the trade for sale with paper collars, one or more to a box.

The attachment F may be worn either with or without a tie or bow.

The following is claimed as new:

1. The tie A, provided With loops for hooking over the attachment F, substantially as set forth.

2. The removable necktie shield F, having button-hole G, of the form shown, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
