WITNESSES IN'VENTOR may be left in view, and in combination there- UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. LEWIS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
REVERSIBLE NECKTIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,109,'dated September 26, 1882.
' Application filed March 29, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. LEWIS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolkand State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Neckties,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a necktie which may be reversed when soiled or worn, or when it desired to change the color thereof to suit the tastes'or fancy of the wearer, or as occasion may require, so that a single tie may serve the purpose of several formed of difl'erent colors or patterns,as heretofore 5 and it consists in forming or constructing the center-piece of the tie double, or having two co1- ors or figures formed of different materials, or otherwise, joined mid-length, and adapted to be reversed end for end, so as to leave in view the desired ('olcr or figure when in position upon the wearer; and in order to extend this feature of changeability. the said center-piece may also be reversed side for side, whereby four distinct colors, figures, designs, or styles with may be worn side pieces, also adapted-to be reversed, so as to present either side in view, which are similarly formed of different shades, colors, or styles of figure or kinds of material to correspond with the center-piece,
or at variance therewith, as may be desired,
whereby a great variety of colors, shades, figures, or of materials may be worn in view, and yet forming but a single necktiecomposed of three separate or independent pieces, temporarily held in position with each other by a piece of wire and a safetypin or other similar device, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a view of a necktie constructedaccording to my invention when in position ready to be applied to use. Fig. 2 represents one of the side pieces. Fig. 3 rep- Fig. 4 repre- Fig. 5 represents the when they are brought together with the said center-piece A B andsecured temporarily in position by the insertion of the curved retaining-wire F, which is inserted through the opening formed through the ends of said side pieces frorri edge to edge, by stitching, so as to form a hem, J, extending from the notches D to the opposite edge, the ends of the said retainingwire F being provided with or bent so as to form hooks H, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The lower ends of the side pieces, E, when brought together, as shown in Fig. 1, may have a safetypin inserted through the said openings or henis, so as to temporarily retain them in position; or they may be secured in any other desired manner. It will be seen and understood that the opposite sides and opposite ends of the said side pieces are constructed exactly in the same manner or alike, so as to permit of their reversal, Figs. 2 and 3 showing the opposite sides of the said side pieces shown in Fig. 1, they being reversed also end for end, and their relative positions from right to left having been changed also, leaving them in position to be connected with the center-piece A B, (shown in Fig. 4 turned to the right,) and not in its proper position when connected, as when it is folded at either two of the said notches or scallops C and its ends placed over the said wire F its opposite ends hang downward at the rear of the side pieces, as shown in Fig. 1, thus forming a great variety orinany styles in one.
Having thus described my invention, what I I claim is- 1. The fiat double reversible center-piece A B, provided with scallops G, and adapted to fold transversely, substantially as described, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A necktie consisting of the double re u
