This invention relates to a strap fastening by which straps--shoulder and/or hose-supporter straps for examplcwcan be adjustably and detachably secured to womens undergarments or waistbands; and the object thereof is to improve the strap fastening described and claimed in Letters Patent No. 1,398,966 issued to me under date of December 6, 1921, with respect Iboth to the form and location of the slide fastener employed, to thereby increase the efficiency of the fastener itself and, particularly for the fastening of hose-supporter straps, to so locate the fastening that it will be unobjectionable to the wearers of the garments.
The invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of an undergarment with shoulder and hosesupporter strap fastenings embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of the shoulder strap fastening, on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a detail showing the upper edge of the garment with the shoulder strap fastener in place thereon; Fig. 4 is a section through the hose-supporter strap fastening, on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail, similar to Fig. 3, showing a portion of the garment and the hosesupporter fastener.
As illustrated, a indicates the garment, with upper and lower hemmed edges b and c, cl and e indicate the shoulder and hose-supporter' straps, and f and f indicate the slide fasteners by which these straps are secured to the garment, respectively. The fastener f, a slotted plate of thin and preferably rustless metal with two slots one lof which is closed and the other has a narrow opening g cut centrally thereto through. the adjacent outer side of the plate, and this bar has a convexly curved or rounded outer edge h. In the fastener f', which is similar, the con- Vex out-er edge of the plate on that side thereof through which the opening g is cut is provided with teeth i. These fasteners are respectively attached upon or to the upper and lower hemmed edges of the garment, by their intermediate or central bars, with the closed slot on the outer side of the hem; and in each case the strap is adjustably secured thereto by folding back the end of the strap and passing the two folds of the loop forwardly through the outer closed slot of the fastener and the inner or rear fold only back throughthe inner'open slot, and then drawing the strap tight.
The convexly curved edge of the plate against which the folded end of the strap bears when tightened serves to spread the strap and so to keep it from working over sidewise and possibly drawing together and through the openingin the bar, especially in the case of the light silk ribbons usually used for shoulder straps; and the teeth provided on this edge serve to prevent the slipping of the strap either through the fastener or along the edge and through the opening therein, particularly an elastic strap as commonly used for a hose-supporter. Furthermore, the fasteners, being located upon or at the hemmed edges of the garment, are out of the way and will not be a source of annoyance to the wearer when sitting down.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A slide fastener comprising a plate cut away to form two transverse slots and a central narrow opening through the side of the plate to one of said slots, the outer edge of the plate on that side thereof through which the opening is cut and around which a strap is to be passed being convexly curved tothereby hold the strap spread thereon.4
2. A slide fastener comprising a plate cut away to form two transverse slots and a central narrow opening through the side of the plate to one of said slots, the outer edge of the plate on that side thereof through which the opening is cut being provided with teeth adapted to grip a strap threaded through the slots and passed around and bearing against said edge to thereby prevent the slipping of the strap through the fastener or along the edge.
3. A slide fastener comprising a plate cut away to form two transverse slots and a central narrow opening through the side of the plate to one of said slots, the outer edge of the plate on that side thereof through which the opening is cut being convexly curved and provided with teeth.
4. An adjustable strap fastener for a waistband and the like comprising, in combination with the band, a slide fastener having one closed slot and one slot with a narrow, Opening centrally thereto through the adjacent side of the fastener which is secured to the edge of the band wit-h the closed slot on the outer edge thereof, and a strap adjustably attached to said fastener by a looped end both folds of which are passed through the closed slot from back to front and over the front of the. central bar and the back fold only of the loop is then passed through the open slot.
5. An adjustable strap fastening for a waistband and the like comprising, in combination With the band, a slide fastener having one closed slot and a second slot with a central opening thereto through the adjoining side of the fastener and marginal teeth on that side thereof through which the opening is out which is secured to the band with the Closed slot on the outer edge thereof, and an elastic strap which is adjustably attached to said fastener by a freely looped end both folds of which Iare passed through the closed slot from back to front and the back fold only of the loop is then passed back through the open slot.
