HUBER H. ROOT, or
A. 13001 court- NY, 'or iun- SPECIMEN BOX Application filed my 19, 1925. Serial No. 31,421. i
My invention concerns boxes or containers for articles which make it of great importance that though necessarilymade of pieces of Wood,ithe joints unavoidable. in the con-' st'ruction shall be so tight as to-beproof against the admission of insects or air, and in particular to boxes for mounting entomological or other natural history'specimens. In such a box it is important that no joint exists in the box sufliciently' open to permit I the entrance .of moths or other insects, because they feed upon and destroy such specimens. Although the making of such boxes is done with great skill and of-kiln-dried lumber, the best of them being putin dry places 5 I orsubject to atmospheric and temperature changes willfrom the shrinkage and expan-.
sion of the wood that occurs have cracks where the cover meets the body ofthe box. Thesecracks are of suflicient jsize'to permit the entrance of'moths or other insects; The object of my invention. is to provide a box or container which being of necessityopenable for access to. its interior may at all times, when in a closed condition,'be sealed against the passageof'objectionable' things into the box. My invention consists in whatever is lar sheet of'heavy paper, '15, which" issedescribed by oris includedflin the terms or scope of the appended claims.-
In the annexed drawings: Fig. 1 is a perspective view bodying my invention Fg. 2 is a cross section thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of the mount-v ing'board part of the box.
Describing in detail thebox or container shown in the drawings, it is of rectangular form consisting of .four side walls, 10, conof a box emsisting of strips of wood securely united'at the 'four corners and with a top cover or closure, 11, of glass which at its edges fits in grooves in the inner sides of the side walls, the joints being hermetically sealed, as'by the use of white shellac or sodiumsilicate or secured by paper to the top edges. The glass, of course, is to enab-le one, to see specimens that are to be examined while mounted in the box. The box sides rest at their bottom edges upon a rectanglar' bottom closure whose dimensions may match the lateral di-' mensions of the box sides, which closure and the box sides are separable so as to give access to the interior of the box, and-also to as a mounting board for specimens. It is a common-practice to mount specimens upona mounting board and then later to tr'ansfer them to a box, but by my invention a separate i mountingboard is unnecessary. .My com -v bined closure and mounting board in. one, form consists of a thin rectangular board, 12, to the upper side of which is secured'a sheet of easily pinned or penetrated material.
preferably "a fibrous material suchascork or peat, such sheet, 13, being of'lateral di 'mens'lo'ns 'matching the internal jlateral dimensions of the box sides so that whenthe box sides are in position they are'telescoped over the sheet and'are thereby centered. At each of the four edges of the sheet, .13,
mally tend :to bodily move outward, which" when the side walls are telescoped over the sheet are engaged by the inner sides of the a side walls and yieldingly press outward against the same with sufiiceint forcej to make the desired tightjoint. j Normally,, of course, these flaps hennot engaged by the would. be theplane of s'uch'side walls when the latterare in" position. may be the marginal portions of arecta'ngucured bypins, 16, or otherwise, to the peneboard'shall be white or some otherlight color' to furnisha suitable background for specimens, and the sheetof paper admirably side walls extend outward beyond what l combines the desired properties forabackground and the packing strip on the'mar gins, and of course, it may be readily penetrated by the pins to which'the specimens. are attached. Of course, my invention is not restricted. to the use of a continuous sheet, and if desired the packing strip or flap at each of thefour sides may be a sepa'-. rate piece suitably secured in place;
If desired attachingmeans may be provided, to secure together the separableclosure and the box proper, and by box proper Imea'n the member which includes the. side I "walls and the permanent closure, such as the plate of glass at the top of the space between the side walls, but the friction of the packin'g-strips against the side walls mayserve to prevent accidental displacement in han-' dling the box by holding 'itat the bottom Such. fastening means maybe hooks, 16, pivecting oted tothe front side wall and pins, 17, prosaid eyes, 18..
What I claim is: 1. A box or container .compr smg, side walls, closures for the space between the side walls applied to the opposite edges thereoi with sealed joints, at least 'oneof such closures being separable from the side walls, and the sealing means between the.
' thereof with sealed joints, atleast one of same and the'side walls consisting of laterally and bodily movable packing strips situated between the inner sides of the side walls and marginal surface of the closure. 7 2. box or container comprising side 'walls, closures for the spacebetween the o side Walls applied to the opposite edges thereof with sealed joints, at least one of such closures, being separable from the side walls, and the sealing means between the same and the sidewalls consisting or lat erally and bodily movable packing strips carried by such separable j closure and situated between the margins thereof and the 1nn'er sides of sald side walls. I
3.;A1 box or container comprlsing side 7 ,Walls, closures for they space within the side walls, oneof which is permanently secured with a sealed joint to the side Walls,'and
the other is separably secured to the side walls,'.a laterally-and. bodily movable jointseali-ng meanssbetween the separable closure and the side walls, the permanent closure being transparent and the other closure hav-' ing a, specimen attaching surface within 7 the box and having marginal edges v between which. and said walls said joint-sealing means issituated. v s 1 4., A box or container comprising side walls, closures for the space within the side walls, oneot which is permanently secured with a sealed joint to the side walls, and the other is separably secured to the side walls,
the permanent closure being transparent and the other closure having a specimen attaching surface within the box, that consists of a sheet of readily penetrable material that extends within and is overlappedat its edges by the side walls and laterally and bodily movable packing strips between said sheet and said side walls. j r q 5 5.'A box or container comprising 'side Walls, closures for the space within the side walls, one of whichis permanently secured 7 from the edge of the closure, 12,. with wvlnch' the hooks may be moved lnto 'and'out with a sealed joint to thesidewalls, and the other is'separably secured tothe side Walls, the permanent closure being transparent and the other-closure havinga specimen attach- -ing surface within the box that consists of a sheet of readily penetrable material that extends within and is overlapped at its edges by the side walls and laterally and bodily movable packing-strips between said sheet and said side Walls, said packing strips be ing integral with a readilypenetrable sheet that extends over said first mentioned sheet. i
' 6. A box or container comprising side walls, closures for the space'betweenthe side walls applied totheiopposite [edges such closures being separable fr'om'the side "walls, and the sealing means between the bodily movable packing strips and fastening means to hold togethenthe sidewalls and the separable closure.
7. A box or container comprising side walls, closures for the space between the side walls applied tothe opposite 'edges thereof with sealed joints, at least one of such closures being separable from the side walls,
and the sealing means between the same and the side walls consisting of laterally and bodily movable packing strips situated-between the inner sides of the side walls and:
marginal surface of the. closure, and 'fasten- 8. A box or container co mprising side .ing means to hold together the sidewalls walls, closures for the space within the'side walls, one of which is permanently secured with a sealed joint to the'side Walls, and the other is separably secured to the side walls,
the permanent closure being, transparent and the other closure having a specimen attaching surface within the box thatconsists of a sheet of readilypenetrable material that extends within and is overlapped at its edges by the sidewalls and laterally and bodily movable packing strips between said sheet a and said side walls, said packing strips bei'ng integral with the readily penetrable sheet that extends over; said'first mentionedsheet, bot-h sheets being plane and rectangular, and'the sheet havin the packingfstrips being slit at the corners.
