Although this container is shown and described as particularly adapted for the shipping of live chicks, it willbe realized that the features of the present invention are adaptable in connection with other-suitable containers.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain structure embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the entire container, closed; Fig. 2 is a detailed view, also in perspective, of one of the interior partitions and its associated spacing and locking means; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating a'modiflcation. 7
Referring now particularly to Fig. 1, the box consists of a body portion 1 and a top 2, both being suitably perforated asshown, for ventilation purposes. The interior of the box is divided 1 into compartments, four in the present i1lustra-- tive embodiment, by means of vertical partitions 3 and 4 at right angles to one another and suit ably secured at their ends to the box walls. Each of these partitions has two projecting edge elements 5, 5 and 6, 6 which come upthrough suitable slots 7 and Sin the cover. The foregoing features are all described in more detail in Patent No.1,744,125.
In order to lock the lid 2 to the box 1 the edge elements are provided with bendable tabs which may take any convenient form. Two suitable illustrative forms are shown. Both forms may be used in the same box as shown in Fig. 1', or either form may be employed alone. In the form shown in Fig. 2, thelocking tabs are indicated by the reference character 10 and are separated from the main body of the partition 4 by short under'-- cut slots 11 of a height approximately q flto 2a mas. the thickness of the cover 2, so that the bottom edges of the tabs 10 when folded to the locking position shown will bear against the outside surface of the cover.
The modified form shown in Fig. 3 comprises 5 tabs 12 cut from an interior part of the upstanding elements 6, so as to leave the outer ends 6 attached to the body of the partition 3 and to leave the tabs fastened to the portions 6*. Asin the previous form, the tabs 12 are undercut as at 10 13 to allow for the thickness of the cover. It is believed that the operation of the locking elements is obvious from the foregoing'description. A brief resume is that the boxes are originally made with the tabs in the same plane as 15 the partitions to which they are attached. After the cover is on the tabs are bent out at an angleas shown to lock the cover, and remain in that position partly by the inherent tendency of the material to maintain the position to which bent 2o and partly by the bearing of the bottom of the tab on the lid of the box. To open the box the tabs are of course aligned with their respective slots and the lid lifted off.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the structure herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. A shipping box having a lid, slots through said lid,'interior partitions in said box, said partitions having upstanding portions adapted to i project through said slots and not exceeding the length of their respective slots, and tabs on said projecting portions adapted to be swung out of the planes of their respective portions and over said lid while maintaining attachment to said 40 projecting portions.
2. In a container of the character described having a slotted lid and spacing elements secured inside the container and projecting in part through the slots in the lid, locking means in- 5 cluded in the projecting parts of said spacing elements adapted to be positioned in the plane of said spacing elements for placing and removing the lid and adapted to be swung out of said plane for locking the lid, said spacing elements when in said plane beingwithin the length of their respective slots.
