HEAVY DUTY SHIPPING CARTON Filed June 16, 1947 v as Arroantys.
' Patented" Aug. 24, ms"- OFFICE v vr-nu'rr ammo can'ros Williams. at. hllll, Mm. minor to Gaylord Container Corporation, St. Louis. Ha, a corporation of Maryland Application June 1c. 1941. Serial No. "4,916
This invention relates to heavy duty shipping cartons of the kind comprising a tall. tubular open-ended liner and duplicate upper and lower slip covers fitting over the open ends of said liner with their ends in abutting relation. A serious practicable objection to the above type of carton is that the height of the liner prevents the packer from reaching through the opening in the upper end of said liner to the lower portion thereof. The present invention has for its principal object to provide a simple and inexpensive shipping carton of the above type that will permit easy access to be had to the lower portion of the tubular liner to facilitate packing thereof.
The invention consists in providing one side wall of the tubular liner above the lower slip cover therefor with flaps which can be swung outwardly to provide access to the lower portion of said liner and which can be swung back to wall forming position to permit the upper slip cover to be telescoped over the upper end portion of the liner. The invention also consists in the heavy duty shipping carton and in the parts and com-' binations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing. which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a shipping carton embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the liner mounted in the lower slip cover and the upper slip cover in position to be applied over the upper end of said liner.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the liner mounted in the lower slip cover and the doors of the liner swung open to permit access to be had to the lower portion of the liner; and
I Claims. (Cl. 22914) and are locked in contracted position by means of suitable coupling members I.
' other of said corners, thereby forming in said Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper portions of the liner and lower slip cover showing the doors sealed with strips of adhesive tape.
In the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown embodied in a heavy duty shipping carton comprising a relatively tall open-ended tubular liner l and duplicate upper and lower slip covers 2 and 3. respectively. all made of corrugated board, fiberboard or other bendable material. The slip covers I and 3 are telescoped over the open ends of the liner I with their opposing ends in abutting relation. As shown in the drawing. the carton may be bound with crossed metal'securing bands or straps 4 that extend around the carton along the top. bottom and sides thereof wall two doors or flaps '8 adapted for horizontal swinging movement into and out of wall forming position about the vertical supporting hinges formed by said corners. By this arrangement. the two doors 5 may be swung outwardly to provide in one side wall of the tall liner i above the lower slip cover 3 therefor a side opening through which easy access may be had to the lower portion of said liner for packing.' After the liner has been filled through the opening in one side wall thereof, the two hinged flaps or doors 8 are swung back into wall forming position and the upper slip cover is then telescoped over the open end of said liner and serves to hold said doors in such position. As shown in Fig.4, application of the upper slip cover 2 after packing may be facilitated by sealing the doors 9 shut with strips of adhesive tape Ill applied over the slits I and I.
What I claim is:
1. In a shipping carton comprising a tubular open-endedupright liner of rectangular section and upper and lower slip covers telescoping over the open ends of said liner, the improvement which consists in slitting one side wall of said liner substantially midway of the width of said wall from the top thereof to a point located just above said lower slip cover and slitting said side wall substantially from side to side at said point, thereby forming in said wall two hinged doors adapted. before the application of said upper slip cover to the upper end of said liner, for horizontal swinging movement outwardly out from wall forming position to provide an access opening in said side wall above said lower slip cover.
2-. In a shipping carton comprising a relatively tall tubular open-ended upright liner and upper and lower slip covers telescoping over the open ends of said liner, the improvement which consists in slitting one side wall of said liner from the top thereof to a point located above said-lower slip cover and slitting said side wall substantially from side to side at said point, thereby forming 2,447,017 3 4 in said wall a hinged door adapted, before the m application of said upper slip cover to the upper B was cum end of and line horizontal swinging move.
