TEXTILE CCNTAINER WITH SLOTTED CORNERS INVENTOR. i g eZom THAzww'OrZ/Z, ,WV rim/ M D Z' Filed May 25, 1948 Patented Jan. 1, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TEXTILE CONTAINER WITH SLOTTED CORNERS Melvin T. Hunsworth, Collegcvillc, Pa., assignor to Container Corpora a corporation of De tio n of America, Chicago, laware Application May 25, 1948, Serial No. 29,166
' 5 Claims; (01, 229 2s) This invention relates, generally,- to paperboard containers and it has particular relation to containers in which textiles and the like can be packed.
container packed to the top.
Other objects 01' this invention will, in part, be obvious and in part appear hereinafter. This invention is disclosed in the embodiment cation of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
container in the closed position;
Figure 3 is a view, infront elevation. of the liner which is optionally used in the container shown in the preceding figures; and
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now particularly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, it will be noted that the reference character I 0 designates, generally, a rectangular textile container of paperboard such as fibreboard which may have relatively small transverse dimensions as cated,v generally, at I I and a bottom section which is indicated. generally, at It. and bottom sections II and I2 are identical in withstanding relatively rough handling.
The container in may be employed as dew scribed above for the packing oftextiles. However, in order to facilitate the filling of the bot tomsection I2 to and including the space enclosed by the top section II, a liner, indicated juxtaposed relation.
As indicated above, the container ll may have relatively small transverse dimensions as co pared to its depth. when this is the case it is diiilcult to accurately and properly place textiles at the bottom it it is necessary to place them thereat through the open top of the liner 22.
In order to overcome this difllculty the side wall of the liner 2! adjacent the side wall ll of the bottom section I! is out along a line 25 which is located along the upper edge of this side wall I. Also, as shown in Figure 3, the glue strip 2 extends only to the line 25. This provides panels 26 which can be swung about their edges 21 which coincide with the corners of the liner 22.
When the container I with the liner 22 is to be packed with textiles, the panels 26 first are swung outwardly as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing. The textiles then may be packed through the open side thus provided in the liner 22 and over the upper edge of the side wall H of the bottom section 12. Thereafter the panels 25 can be swung to their closed positions and the container packed to the top of the liner 22. The top section I I then is telescoped over the liner 22 and over the upper end of the bottom section I! to the extent limited by the slots 19.
By slotting the corners l6 of the top and bother slots extending from their inner ends and being disposed with their inner end portions in telescoping relation limited in extent by the length of said slots, the portions of certain of the walls of one of said sections between said slots being flared outward and the portions of the walls of the other section corresponding to the other walls or said one section being flared outward between said slots.
3. A paperboard container comprising opposed cover sections open at their inner ends and of substantially rectangular cross section, each tom sections and I! as disclosed herein a rigid the juxtaposed edges overlap a limited extent. Thus, it is unnecessary to construct the side and end walls I! and I5 of such length as to overlap or telescope for their entire lengths. This results in a substantial saving in material used for making the container l0. At the same time the slots 15 limit the extent of movement of the top and bottom sections H and'l! toward each other, thereby enclosing a maximum of space with a minimum of material while maintaining the desired rigidity of construction.
Since certain changes can be made in the foregoing construction and different embodiments of the invention can be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, it is intended that all matter shown in the accompanying drawingand described hereinbefore shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitin sense.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A paperboard container comprising opposed box like cover sections open at their inner ends and each having a plurality of angularly related side walls of substantially equal height all connected together for substantially their full height and providing corners between them, each of said sections having corner slots extending from their inner ends and said sections being disposed with their inner end portions in telescoping relation with certain of the side walls of one section at the outer face of the corresponding side walls of the other section and other of the side walls of said one section at the inner face of the corresponding walls of said other section.
2. A paperboard container comprising opposed box like cover sections open at their inner ends and each having a plurality of angularly related side wall all secured together for substantially their full height and providing comers between them. said sections having relatively short corhaving side and end walls all secured together for substantially their full height and relatively short corner slots extending from its inner end, the portion of the side walls or one of said sections between said corner slots being flared outward and the portions of the end walls of the other section between said corner slots being flared outward, said sections being disposed with their inner end portions in telescoping relation limited in extent by the length of said slots.
4. A paperboard container comprising a liner, and opposed box like cover sections fitting on said liner each open at it inner end and having a plurality of angularly related side walls all secured together for substantially their full height and providing corners between them, each of said sections having relatively short corner slots extending from their inner ends and being disposed with their inner end portions in t lescoping relation with certain of the side walls of one section at the outer face of the corresponding side walls of the other section holding the inner end portions of the latter side walls in pressure contact with said liner and other of the side walls of said one section at the inner face of the corresponding walls of said other section with the inner end portions thereof held in pressure contact with said liner by the inner end portions of said other section.
5. A paperboard container comprising a liner of rectangular cross section, and opposed cover sections open at their inner ends and of substantially rectangular cross section fitting on said liner and each having side and end walls secured together for substantially their full height and corner slots extending from its inner end, the portions of the side walls of one of said sections between said corner slots being flared outward and the portions of the end walls of the other section between said corner slots being flared outward, said sections being disposed with their inner end portions in telescoping relation limited in extent by the length of said slots.
