(Cl. 93-36) The present invention relates to the method of constructing display receptacles or containers intended for use in displaying and marketing merchandise of different classes, such, for example, as articlesfof wear, novelties of different kinds, food products, and other forms of merchandise.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved method of constructing receptacles or containers of the class described of sheet material and in a manner to renderthe receptacles strong and durable. and capable of protecting the contents thereof during handling and shipment of the receptacles.
A further object of theinvention is to provide an improved method of constructing a unitary section of an article display receptacle, such for example as a cover section of flexible sheets of material, which facilitates forming and uniting and economical manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved method of constructing one or more sections of an article display receptacle of a plurality of blanks and by which method the blanks can be readily assembled, formed, and connected by suitable means, such, for example, as adhesive material and in a manner to efiect a saving in the time required to complete the sections and in the cost of constructing the same. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved method of constructing a window section for telescopic engagement with another section of an article display receptacle and by whichmethod pre-cut body, cover, and transparent sheets can readily be assembled in superimposed relation and folded and united to complete the section with a minimum number 40 of operations.
To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be" hereinafter more fully de scribed, the noverfeatures being pointed out in 45 the claims at the end of the specification.

The present application constitutes a division of my copending application Serial No. 180,999, filed .December 21, 1937, for Display receptacle and method of making same. This application relates to a method or methods of forming display receptacles for different articles of merchandise and embodies generally, the use of several blanks cut to predetermined shapes and sizes and folded and connected to complete one section of a container or receptacle designed to have telescoping sections, one of which may be termed a body section and the other a cover section. The body section is adapted to receive the cover section and may be formed in any preferred manner. However, the cover section is preferably formed of three blanks comprising an inner or frame forming sheet, an outer or cover sheet and a transparent window forming sheet interposed between said inner and outer sheets.
The cover section may be formed in several different ways, one of which, for example, comprises scoring and folding the inner sheet or blank to form a frame structure having side and end walls, positioning said frame structure upon the cover and transparent sheets and folding the sides of the transparent and cover sheets and the ends of the latter into position upon the walls of the frame structure and securing them thereon.
Another method of forming the cover section is to superimpose the inner and outer sheets, while in blank form, one upon another with the transparent sheet therebetween and then folding the sheets to form a cover section having top, side, and end walls and in which structure the transparent sheet forms a portion of the top and side walls to provide a window through which to view the contents of the receptacle.
Referring to the drawings I0 designates an article display receptacle constructed in accordance with my improved method, said receptacle comprising separable telescoping bottom and top or body and cover sections I I and I2, respectively, the cover section I2 being shown in Fig. 2, and the body section in Fig. 3. The body section II comprises an elongated box-like frame which may be formed of any suitable material, such, for example, as cardboard or the like, and includes bottom, end and side walls I3, I 4, and-I5, respectively. The side walls are cut away for a portion of their length to form openings therein, as indicated in Fig. 3, whereby to render the article or articles contained in the receptacle visible both through the side and top walls of the receptacle when the cover is applied to the bottom section as shown in Fig. 1.
The cover or top section of the receptacle is formed of three blanks or sheets of material, designated generally by the reference numerals I6, I1, and I8, in Figs. 9, 10, and 11 of the drawings respectively, said sheets being cut to the desired shapes and sizes to form the blanks necessary to the construction of the cover section of the receptacle. The blank I6 constitutes the outer or finishing sheet of the cover section, and I! the transparent window forming sheet, while I8 constitutes the sheet from which the frame or supporting structure of the cover section is formed, as shown in Fig. 8, the frame being also designated by the reference numeral I8 and formed of relatively stifl or heavy cardboard, or other suitable material.
The blank I6 is formed of paper or other suitable material and the blank I I of transparent sheet material such, for example, as Kodapak, Cellophane, or other suitable transparent material. The blank I8 from which the frame is formed, is cut to provide an opening 20 which is surrounded by the side and transverse portions 2| and 22 of the blank, respectively, said transverse portions having extensions 23 thereon as shown in Fig. 11. The blank is scored at 24 and 25 to permit the side and end portions 2| and 23 shown and described the side walls thereof are 1 reduced in depth for the greater portion of their length, with the result that the cover section of the receptacle will have a relatively long and deep opening through which to view the contents of the receptacle.
The opening 20a of the blank I6 corresponds substantially in shape and size to the opening 20 of the blank I8. The side portions 2Ib of the blank I6 correspond to the side portions 2| of the frame I8, while the transverse portions 22b of said blank correspond to the portions 22 of the frame. Likewise the end portions 23b of the blank correspond to the ends 23 of the frame.
The end portions 26a of the blank I6, when forming and applying the latter to the frame of Fig. 8, will be folded around the end walls 22 of the frame and down upon the strips 26 thereof, it being understood that the inner face of the sheet forming the blank I6 will have adhesive material such, for example, as glue applied thereto as indicated by the stippling shown in Fig. 9, before applying the sheet to the frame.
In order that the operator may accurately apply the transparent sheet I1 to the blank I6 the latter is provided with the angular shaped markings Ila, which correspond to the corner portions of the transparent sheet and which facilitate the proper positioning of said sheet upon the blank, in which position it will be held by the glue on the latter, said markings being applied to the sheet by printing them thereon or otherwise as desired.
The transparent sheet is of a length somewhat less than that of the frame I8 whereby when the latter is positioned on the blank I6, as shown in Fig. 12, its ends will extend beyond the ends of said sheet and in overlying engagement with the blank, or in other words will extend to the base lines 23c of the extensions 23b, in which position said ends will be held in contact with the blank by the adhesive material thereon.
One method of assembling the parts forming the cover section of the receptacle comprises first positioning the transparent sheet I! on the blank I6 with the corners of the sheet in substantial registry with the markings I'Ia, at which time the opening 20a of the blank will be closed by said sheet. The next step is that of positioning the frame I8 in overlying relation upon the transparent sheet I1 and with its ends on the portions of the blank lying between the ends of said sheet and the base lines 230 of the extensions 23b, or in other words as shown in Fig. 12. When the blanks I6 and I1 and the frame I8 are assembled as shown in Fig. 12 they are ready for the forming operation, which may be effected by any preferred means such, for example, as suitable male and female dies within the latter of which the assembly shown in Fig. 12 will be forced by the former to cause the marginal portions of the blanks I6 and I! or those which extend beyond the edges of the frame IB to be folded into contact withthe outer faces of the walls of the frame. In this operation the end portions 26a of the blank will be folded into engagement with the portions of the strips 26 which overlie the end walls of the frame I8, after which the end portions 23b of the blank will be folded into engagement with said end walls, suitable means being also employed to fold the side and end edges of the portions 2|b and 23b,
respectively,'of the blank l5 down upon the informing transparent sheet I! therebetween, ad-
hesive material having previously been applied to one of the blanks, preferably the blank l6, to secure the blanks one upon another. Upon thus assembling the blanks the side walls thereof will be folded along the lines of scoring 24 of the blank l8 to form a channel-shapedsection and at about the same time the ends 23 of the blank 8 will be folded along the lines of scoring 25, following which the portions 251; of the blank IE will be folded into position upon'the ends 23 of the blank I8. When these operations have been completed the marginal portions of the side and end walls of the blank l6 will be folded downwardly upon the inner faces of the side and end walls of the blank l8 upon which they will be secured by the adhesive material applied to said marginal portions. With this method the corner strips 25 shown in Fig. 12 may be applied or omitted as desired, but if employed they can be applied before folding the portions 26a of the blank l8 into position on the ends 23 ofthe blank |8. It will be understood that the method Just described can be performed by .hand if desired, or by suitable machine operated parts, construted and timed to fold the different portions of the blanks one relative to another in the man ner described.
In the modification shown in Fig. 13, the re- I ceptacle 28 corresponds generally to that. shown in Fig. 1, the cover section of the receptacle being shown at 29 in Fig. 14 and the body section at 30 in Fig. 15. The method of constructing the cover section 29 of the receptacle 28 is substantially the same as that previously described in connection with the cover section i2 of the receptacle ||l of Fig. 1. The body section of the receptacle 28 is preferably formed of stiff cardboard material and includes. bottom, side, and end walls 3|, 32, and 33, respectively, said side and end walls being cut away to provide openings therein and to afford rigid upstanding corner posts 34 which serve to support the cover section when the sections are in assembled relation, as shown in Fig. 13.
The cover section 29 embodies a substantially rigid frame structure 35, also formed of stiff cardboard or other suitable material, and includes the side and end walls 35 and 31, respectively, connected by suitable corner strips 38, as shown in Fig. 14. The side and end walls of the frame structure 35 are cut away to provide openings therein corresponding to the openings in the side and end walls of the body section. The openings in the side and end walls of the cover frame structure terminate short of the ends of said walls to provide upstanding corner, posts I 39 which include the connected upstanding ends I 39a thereof which are adapted to rest on the angular comer posts 34 of the body section 30 when the sections are in assembled relation, as shown in Fig. 13. The frame structure 35 of the cover section 23 is formed from the blank 35, shown in Fig. 19, which is cut to provide a relatively large opening in the top wall of said frame structure and which includes the vertical openings in the side and end walls of the frame structure when the cover section is completed, as shown in Fig. 4, said openings affording visibility of the c tents of the'receptacle to a relatively high degree.
The corresponding portions of the blank and frame structure 35 are designated by the same reference numerals as shown in Figs. 14 and 19. The portions 39a of said frame structure constitute, in each case, a portion of one of the corner posts of said frame structure. The blank 35 is scored on the lines 350 and 310 to permit itsside and end walls to be folded into position to receive the connecting corner strips 38, "as shown in Fig. 14.
The opening in the top, side, and end walls of the cover'frame structure is closed by a transparent sheet 40 formed, for example, of cellulose acetate, or other suitable transparent material. The blank corresponding to the transparent sheet 40 is shown in Fig. 18, the sideand end portions 35b and 31b of which serve to close'the side and end openings in the frame structure 35 of the cover section, the remaining or central'portion of the sheet constituting the top wall of -;the cover section, other than the inwardly extending corner portions 39a of said frame structure.
The frame structure 35 of the cover section is provided with a cover sheet 4| of -paper or other suitable material, which is formed from th blank 4| shown in Fig. 17. The opening in the blank 4| corresponds to the opening in the blank 35 and 'the side and end wall portions 36d and 31d correspond to the side and end' portions 38 and 31 of the frame forming blank 35, while theportions 39d correspond to the portions 39a of the blank 35. 8 'llhe method of forming the cover section 35 is similar to that employed in the forming of the cover section I2 of Fig. .2 of the drawings. In other words, the frame 35 is formed by folding the side and end wall portions of the blank 35 "and uniting said portions by the corner strips 38. Furthermore thetransparent window sheet 49 will be placed upon the inner face of the cover sheet 4| and united therewith by the adhesive material applied thereto, which is indicated by the stippling inFig. 17. The frame 35 will then be superimposed upon the transparent sheet 40 with the portions 39a of the cover section in substantial alinement with the portions 39d of the cover sheet. Theassembling of the blanks and said frame in this manner can, if preferred, be readily effected while advancing the same, as by means of a conveyor or other moving part for delivering the assembly to the forming dies or other means for folding the marginal portions of the transparent and cover sheets into proper position upon the frame 35, which includes folding of the edges of the cover sheet inwardly of the side and end walls of the frame 35, as shown at 3511 in Fig. 16, in which position said edges are secured, by the adhesive material thereon, to the inner faces of said side and end walls.
It will beunderstood that the blanks 35, 49, and 4| of the modified cover section 29 can be assembled in superimposed relation while in flat condition and folded and connected in a man-' ner similar to that outlined above in the second method described in connection with the blanks shown in Figs. 9, 10, and 11. It will be further understood that in constructing the cover section 29 by said second mentioned method that the comer strips 38 may be omitted if desired.
The principal difference between the cover sections l2 and 29 is that the ends of the transparent sheet of the latter are extended to close the openings in the end walls of the section which serve to increase the visibility of the contents of the receptacles. However, the fact that the end walls are provided with openings and that the transparent sheet is extended to close the same does not prevent forming of the section by either of the methods described above.
The article display receptacles constructed in accordance with the methods described herein each has a .relatively large window opening through-.which to view the articles contained therein, notwithstanding which fact the receptacles, in each case, are of strong and more or less rigid construction and capable of maintaining their shape and of protecting the articles contained therein during shipment or handling from time to time. This is true for the reason that each of the-receptacles is formed of substantially rigid telescoping frame-like sections affording a double wall construction, the strength and rigidity of which is suflicient to prevent buckling or collapse of the receptacles when subjected to rough handling or to pressure exerted thereon when the receptacles are stacked in large numbers either when empty or supplied with the articles to be shipped therein.
In the receptacle shown in Fig. 1, for example, the upstanding end portions of the cover and body sections are each of substantially rigid construction, the said end portions being tied together by the reduced side wall portions of the sections and braced'by the bottom wall of the body section, which in turn is strengthened and braced at points between'the ends of said bottom wall by the upstanding web portions thereon.
Furthermore, in the modified receptacle shown in Fig. 13, the upstanding corner posts 34 of the body section and the correspondingly shaped corner posts 39 of the cover section are of substantially rigid construction and cooperate to increase the strength and rigidity of the receptacle, as do the reduced portions of the side and end walls of the sections and the bottom wall of the body section.
Although several methods of ,constructing the cover sections of the receptacle have been described, it will be understood that the same may be varied to a certain .extent or within certain limits without departing'fro'm the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. The method of forming a cover section of an article display receptacle, comprising superimposing a transparent. sheet upon a cover sheet having an opening therein to close said opening, superimposing a substantially rigid frame structure having a window opening on said cover sheet in spacedrelation to the marginal portions thereof and with said openings in substantial "alinement one with another, folding the marginal portions of said cover sheet into position upon a plurality of the walls of said frame structure and in such manner that the transparent sheet ex-' t ends on two sides of the section, and uniting the portions of the cover sheet with a plurality of the walls of said frame structure by means of adhesive material.
2. The method of forming a unitary section of a display receptacle from apertured inner and outer sheets and a transparent sheet, the outer sheet being greater in size than the inner sheet, comprising positioning theapertured sheets in overlying relation one relative to another with the marginal portions of the outer sheet extending beyond the marginal portions of the inner sheet and with the transparent sheet between the inner and outer sheets in position to close the apertures, folding said sheets and uniting them by the use of adhesive material to form a substantially rectangulaar section having side, end. and top walls with the transparent sheet forming portions of said top and side walls to provide a window for said section, and folding the marginal portions of the outer sheet downwardly within the section upon the walls of the inner sheet and uniting said marginal portions with said walls by the use of adhesive material, said sheets being folded so that the transparent sheet extends on two sides of the section and has a rounded corner.
3. The method of forming adisplay box which comprises forming a bottom section with a base and upstanding side walls, part of at least one of said side walls being lower than other of said side walls to constitute a cutaway part, forming a cover section with a top wall and depending sidewalls adapted to telescope down. over the side walls .of the bottom section, said cover. section being also provided with an opening in its top wall and an opening in at least one of its side walls formed as a continuation of the opening in the top wall, covering said openings with a continuous sheet of transparent material, and superimposing the cover section on the bottom section so that the opening in the side wall of the cover section is in registry with the cutaway part of the bottom section whereby the contents of the box may be viewed through a continuous transparent opening either from the top or a side of the box.
4. The method of forming a display box which comprises forming a bottom section with a base and umtanding side walls, part of at least one of said side walls being lower than other of said side walls to constitute a cutaway part, forming a cover section with a top wall and depending side walls substantially as deep as the side walls of the bottom ,section and adapted to telescope down over the side walls of the bottom section so that the top wall of the cover section rests upon the upper edges of certain of the side walls of the bottom section when'the box is assembled,
said cover section being also provided with an opening in its top wall and an opening in at least a article display receptacle cpmprising superimposing a transparent sheet and an opaque sheet with respect to each other, the opaque sheet having an opening therein and the transparent sheet closing said opening, superimposing with respect to each other a substantially rigid box-like frame structure having an opening with the opening in the frame structure substantially in alignment with the opening in the opaque sheet, and folding the marginal portions of at least one of said sheets into engagement with a plurality of the walls of said frame structure, and securing said folded portions upon said walls, said sheets being folded so that'the transparent sheet extends on two sides of the section.
6. The method of forming a cover section of an article display receptacle, comprising superimposing a transparent sheet upon a cover sheet having an opening therein to close said opening, superimposing upon one of said sheetsa substantially rigid frame structure having window openings intwo different sides of said frame structure, with the opening in one side thereof in alinement with a portion of the opening'in the cover sheet, and folding the marginal portions of said cover sheet against other sides of said frame structure to bring the remainder of the opening in said cover sheet and the portion of the transparent sheet closing the same into a position extending across and closing the opening in the ,other side of said frame structure.
7. A method of forming a cover of a display receptacle, comprising placing upon the inner face of a cover sheet having adhesive material thereon and provided with an opening a transparent sheet in position to close said opening and with its edges spaced inwardly from the edges of said cover sheet, superimposing upon said transparent sheet a frame structure having side walls and a window opening in two of its adjacent walls with at least part of said opening in the frame structure in substantially alined relation to at least part of the opening in the cover sheet and with portions of the walls-of said frame structure in overlying engagement with portions of the cover sheet having the adhesive material thereon, and folding the marginal portions of said cover sheet into position upon a plurality of the walls of the frame structure and uniting said marginal portions with said walls by means of said adhesive material, said cover sheet being folded in such manner that the portion of said transparent sheet which extends across the opening in said cover sheet will extend across said window opening on two walls of said frame structure and will have arounded corner between said two walls.
8. The method of forming a cover of a display receptacle, comprising placing upon the inner face of a cover sheet having adhesive material thereon and provided with an opening a transparent sheet in position to close said opening and with its edges spaced inwardly from the edges of said cover sheet, superimposing upon said transparent sheet a frame structure having sidewalls and a window opening formed by two contiguous openings in adjacent walls with at least part of said opening in the frame structure in substantially alined relation to at least part of the opening in the cover sheet and with portions of the walls of said frame structure in overlying engagement with portions of the cover sheet hav-v ing the adhesive material thereon, and folding the marginal portions of said cover sheet into position upon a plurality of the walls of the frame structure and uniting said marginal portions with said walls by means of said adhesive material, said cover sheet being folded so that the transparent sheet extends across the window opening in said frame structure.
9. The method of forming a cover of a display receptacle, comprising advancing a cover sheet having an opening therein, placing a transparent sheet on said cover sheet during advancement thereof to close said opening, superimposing a frame structure having side walls and a window opening formed by two openings contiguous to each other in adjacent walls upon said transparent sheet during continued advancement of said cover sheet, employing means to fold the marginal portions of said cover sheet into position upon a plurality of the walls of said frame structure and uniting said marginal portions with said walls.
10. The method of forming a portion of a dis play receptacle which includes the steps of forming a substantially rigid paperboard frame structure having a plurality of walls connected to each other and having window openings in two adjacent walls, forming a cover sheet with a window opening, corresponding approximately to said window openings in said frame structure,
applying a transparent sheet to said cover sheet 7 to extend across the window opening therein, with the edges of the transparent sheet overlapping the margins of said cover sheet around said opening, bringing said cover sheet and transparent sheet together against one wall of said frame structure having a window opening therein in such relation that said window opening in said wall is approximately registered with a portion of the window opening in the cover V sheet, and folding other portions of said cover sheet against other walls of said frame structure in such mannerthat another portion of said window opening in said cover sheet is approximately registered with a window opening in another Wall of said frame structure.
11. The method of forming a portion of a display receptacle which includes the steps of forming a substantially rigid paperboard frame structure having a plurality of walls connected to each other and having window openings in two adjacent walls, forming a cover sheet with a window opening corresponding approximately to said window openings in said frame structure, applying adhesive to substantially the whole of one surface of said cover sheet, applying a transparent sheet to the adhesive coated surface of said cover sheet to extend across the window opening therein with the edges of the transparent sheet overlapping the margins of said cover sheet around said opening to contact with the'adhesive thereon and with said edges of the transparent sheet spaced materially inwardly from a plurality of edges of the cover sheet to leave a substantial portion of the adhesive coating on said cover sheet uncovered by said transparent sheet, applying said cover sheet and transparent sheet together to one wall of said frame structure having a window opening therein in such relation that said window opening is approximately registered with a portion of the window opening in the cover sheet and a portion of'said wall comes into contact with an adhesive coated portion of said cover sheet, and
folding other portions of said cover sheet against m sheet of such size that it box with a viewing window therein, which comprises forming a box section of cardboard stock with a wall and with sides manently erected in positions substantiallype endicular to the wall, said sides being rigid with the wall, said wall and at least one of the sides having openings formed therein which are at least partly continuations of each other, forming a wrapper will cover at least the wall and extend over the sides andwith an opening at least no larger than the size of the combined openings in the side and wall, applying adhesive to one face of the wrapper sheet, applying a sheet of transparent material to the adhesive coated face of saidisheet to extend across said opening and to overlap a portion of said wrapper sheet around said opening in contact with the adhesive thereon, bringing the opening in thewrapper sheet into cooperative relation with the combined opening in the box section and wrapping the wrapper sheet around the box section so as to apply the wrapper sheet adhesively to the sides of eration being carried out in such manner that the box section serves as a form about which the wrapper' sheet is drawn so as to maintain the transparent sheet approximately taut and without sagging with respect to the side and wall of the box.
13. The method of forming a section of a setup box with a viewing window therein, which the box section, the wrapping opcomprises forming a box section of cardboard stock with a wall and with sides permanently erected in positions substantially perpendicular to the wall, said sides being said wall having most of its area cut away and at least one of the sides having a portion of its area cut away with the two cutway areas being rigid with the wall,
at least partly continuations of each other, forming a wrapper sheet of such size that it will cover at least the wall and extend over the sides and with an opening at least no larger than the size of the combined openings in the side and wall, applying adhesive to one face of the wrapper sheet, applying a sheet of transparent material adhesively to the sides of the box section, the
wrapping operation being carried out in such manner that the box section serves as a form about which the transparent sheet and wrapper are drawn so that the transparent sheet is spanned across both of the cut-away parts without appreciable sawin A REGINALD A. NAGLE.
