UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. MILLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGN OR OF PART OF HIS RIGHT TO KENNY & MGPARTLAND AND JOSEPH E. MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-GAITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [69,022, dated October 19, 1875; application filed October 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. MILLER, of the city ot'New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Button-Gaiters, being a saving in labor and material; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it.
This invention has relation to the manufacture of button-gaiters for men, women, and children, and may be regarded as an improvement, particularly, upon thesubject of Letters Patent N 0. 149,500, assigned to Kenny & Mc- Partland, of New York city.
The improvement consists, essentially, in forming the gaiter without a separate vamp and button-piece, and without a seam across the toes, or up the front as far as the anklejoint.
The inside quarter, vamp, the button-piece as far as the ankle, and the foxing of the outside quarter are cut in one piece. The whole of the inside quarter, being cut in one piece, extends from the heel to the toe, and continues over the toe around to the heel again. The button-piece, as far as the ankle-joint, is also out in the inside ,quarter, and overlaps and is buttoned to a piece forming an outside quarter, stitched to the foxing of said outside quarter. A piece is stitched to the buttonpiece at the ankle-joint, and continued to the top, forming a continuation of the buttonpiece. The button-piece, from the toe to the ankle, is scalloped from the foxing of the quarter, as described and shown in said Patent N 0. 149,500, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
The object of this invention is to produce,
can be worn with greater ease in the absence of seams to compress and hurt the foot.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates the piece or pattern cut to form the inside quarter, vamp, button-1.)iece,- and foxing of outside quarter, designated, respectively, by letters a b c d. B represents the piece from Whichis formed the outside quarter, and which, as stated, is stitched to the foxing d. O designates the piece which constitutes the continuation of the button-piece from the ankle-joint to the top.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described button-gaiter, having the inside qua-rter, vamp, button-piecet'rom toe to ankle-joint, and foxing of outside quarter formed in one piece, and the outside quarter formed from another piece, and having a piecestitched to the buttorrpiece at the ankle-joint to complete the same, substantially as set forth.
-2. The pattern or piece forming the inside quarter, vamp, foxing of outside quarter, and part of the button-piece of a button-gaiter, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my handthis 5th day of October, 1875.
WILLIAM H. MILLER. Witnesses:
THEODORE CLARK, S. B. BRAGUE.
