Hair-Dressing Machine. 7 'N0,168964, Patented Oct-19,1875.
N. PETERS, FMOTO-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES;
PATENT QFFICE.
OSMOND M. BROWN AND WALTER R. VAUGHAN, OF COUNCIL BLUFF S, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAIR-DRESSING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,964, dated October 19, 1875; application filed July 22, 1c75.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that we, OSMOND M. BROWN and \VALTER It. VAUGHAN, of Council Bluli's, in the county -of Pottawattamie and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Dressing Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specitication Our invention consists of a device to be used by ladies in making their toilets. The main object of said invention is to construct a neat and handy article for holding false hair and curls while the same are being dressed for wear.
The following specification will more fully describe its construction and various uses.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 represents a view of the hair-holding device detached from the clamp.
A represents a clamp, having the usual clamping-arms a a and clani1 iiig-sore\v b. In the rear of the arms a is formed a vertical opening, having screw-threads. 0 represents an upright, which may be made in any fanciful shape, or plain, as shown, and which is formed broad at the top, and terminates in a screw-tench, y, at its bottom. One face of this upright is provided with a rubber, leather, or cloth strap, D, and the other face with a series of hooks, d d cl. The top edge of this upright is also provided with a groove, E, for holding combs, 8:0. The top arm a of the clamp is also provided with a groove, f, for hair-pins, pins, &c.
When in use, the device is clamped to a table, wimlow-frame, or other suitable place, and the false hair is held under the strap 1),
and combed or otherwise dressed by the wearor or maid.
When used for dressing curls, the part 0 is turned around, and the curls hooked to the hooks d d and curled in the usual way.
Great ditficulties have heretofore been experienced by ladies in dressing their false hair, inasmuch as the practice has almost invariably been to hold the same between edges of a bureau-drawer. and by said means of holding the hair for combing and brushing it the edges of the diawer (being sharp) will cut the hair, and in every dressing entail more or less loss thereof. Our invention will obviate this, and will be found a great addition to every ladies dressing-table.
It can be made of any suitable material, and when not in use can be taken apart and packed away in a small compass.
What we claim is- 1. The combination of the clamp A and the detachable piece 0, having strap 1) and screwtenon 1, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the clamp C, having groove f, and the piece 0, having groove E, strap D, and books 01 d d, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 29th day of June, 1875.
OSMOND M. BROWN. WALTER B. VAUGHAN.
Witnesses D. I. STUBBS, L. F. MURPHY.
