DISPLAY CARTON.

Thisinvention relates to a display carton, more particularly it comprises a carton adapted to serve as a container and shipping package; also as a device for advertising and displaying small articles of merchandise. The object of the invention is to improve display cartons by making the same more simple in design and inexpensive to manufacture and at the sametime to make them more effective when used for advertising purposes.

The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain structures embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

As is clearly shown in the drawing, the car ton comprises a base section 1 and a top section 2 adapted to be assembled therewith to form the complete carton. The base sect-ion asis shown in Fig. 5 comprises the bottom proper 3 whichis ofrectangular form and has integral side members 4; and end members, 5 formed at the margins thereof. Said side and end members are designed to be folded up from the bottom but they need not be fastoned at the corners for reasons which will presently appear. The top member as is clearly shown, in Fig. 6 is formed from a single piece of sheetmaterial and is provided with atab 6 adjacent the lower edge by means of which it may be folded into an open rectangular structure and is designed to be of a size to snugly fit over the base section when the side and end members thereof are turned up into box like shape. The top member thus serves as the means for assembl ng in finished form the two members comprising the carton.

As will be noted more particularly in Fig. 6, the lower edge of the blank forming the member 2 is of a height corresponding with the height of the side andend pieces of the base member 1. Adjacent the top extension 6 heretofore referred to, the coverportion 7 of the carton is formed, said cover being scored at four points transversely, the scoring near its free end being designed to provide a tongue section 8 whereby the cover may be fastened'in either closed or display position. The scoring adjacent the intermediate por tion of the coverextends only partially across the same, the central portion of said cover having a cut 9 of V shape or any other desired form to provide an ornamental edge when the cover is folded to display position as is shown in Fig. 1. The scoring adjacent the base of the cover is designed to provide a short section 11 between the hinge of the cover and the adjacent larger section thereof which will. serve to offset the two larger sections of the cover in inclined relation to each other when the cover is folded into display position. The projecting angle thus formed is disposed so as to engage the rear end of the box and thus will prevent the cover from being folded back so far as to drop advertising matter on the forward face thereof below the normal line of vision. Upon each of the longer sections of the blank forming the top member, which constitute the sides of the carton, there is provided a lateral extension 12 adapted to be foldedinwardly so as to occupy an angular position within the carton. Each of said extensions is scored along a llne parallel to the free edge thereof so as to form a narrow strip 13 which may be turned mwardly so as to rest against the bottom of the carton when the extensions are folded in inclined position therein. The extensions are preferably provided with cutout seats to receive the ends of various articles of merchandise to be displayed 1n the carton.

These seats may be appropriately shaped for 7 the particular article to be displayed and in the form of construction illustrated, oneof the extensions is shown with circular apertures 14 to receive the head portions of col- .lapsible tubes containing rubber cement and the opposite extensions are provided with elongated oval shaped apertures to receive the base portions ofthe collapsible tubes.

It is obvious that seats of different shape may be devised to conform to the particular shape of the articles tobeplaced in the carton.

From what has been described, it will'be understood that the carton may be rapidly assembled from two blanks of the form shown in Figs. Sand 6, each of said blanks being folded along the dotted lines and the tab 6 being secured by means of glue or other suitable fastening devices to the opposite end of the lower section of said blank. The entire carton is then ready for use and the articles of merchandise may be placed therein and the cover folded down over the goods with the tongue inserted between the two sections of card board at the end opposite to that to which the cover is hinged. Thecarton may then be stored or shipped until it is needed for sales purposes when the tongue may be removed from the slot; at the forward end of the carton and inserted in the slot between the ad 'acent top and bottom sections at the rear the carton. The cover will then be folded in the position shown inFigs; 1 and 2 and the forward face of the carton which preferably will besupplied with suitable advertising matter, will then be visible to any person in the vicinity of the position of the carton. The sameadvertising matter is visible whether the carton is in closed or display position inasmuch as it is the lower half section of the cover which is exposed when the cover is folded in the manner indicated.

The device just described is particularly suitable for light articles of merchandise and from its mode of formation, it has the advantage of internal bracing along its side edges which makes the entire carton of a greater rigidity than it would have with an equivalent amount of material differently disposed. The. angular positioning of the side extensions also serves to provide an effective brace for the end of the carton to which the cover is hinged and serves :to hold the folded cover in firm. relationship with the base of the carton when. said cover is in folded display position.

Other modes of applying the principle of our invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the structure herein disclosechprovided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of suclrstated means be employed.

We thereforeparticularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention 1. In an article ofthe character described,

the combination of the base section of a carton having a cover hinged at an upper edge and therew1th carrying display matter upon its upper side, a. fold along an approximately intermediate transverse line of said cover and a second fold along a line parallel to and spaced a short distance from the line of the hinge of said cover, whereby to form a rearon said top section provided with a plurality of transverse folds, a tongue at the front edge of said cover, and a pair of lateral extensions formed on said top section, folds provided in said extensions adjacent the upper edge of said carton, additional folds parallel to said last-named folds. andspaced from the free ed es of said extensions to ermit said edges. to eturned back against the bottom of said carton to space the extensions in angular relation to the side portions of the carton.

In an article of the characterdescribed, the combination of a base section of a carton of rectangular form having integral exten sions turned upwardly to form side members, a top section for saidcarton comprising an open rectangular body section adapted to fit over the side members of said base section,

In an article ofthe character described, the combination of a base section of a carton comprising the bottom and four upstanding side members, a top section in the form of an open band adapted to fit about said upstanding side sections, and .a plurality of extensions continuous with the upper edge of said band, two of said extensions being provided with parallel longitudinal folds to turn backwardly on the base to cause inclined portions to be disposed within the side portions of said carton, said inclined portions having a plurality of apertures to receive the ends of articles of merchandise, and another of said extensions having a plurality of transverse folds including a hinge-line fold and another fold spaced therefrom to permit the same to serve as a cover for said carton when in closed position or as a display device when in open position whereby the portion of the cover adjacent the base projects back from the upper edge of said base.
