Description

April 21,1931. J. P. MOHEN DISPLAY CARTON Filed June 5, 1927 Patented Apr. 21, 1931' UNITED STATES JOHN PATRICK MOHEN,
or srr. Lours, ivrrs'sounr DISPLAY sermon Application filed June 3,
Ihis invention relates to display cartons for the packing, shipping and display of merchandise in general, and particularly for the handling of candies, confectionery or any 5 small stuff where it may be desirable to' make a counter display of the goods for sale.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a carton of fibre board, pasteboard or any other suitably flexible material, wherein is incorporated a collapsible and extensible element made of the same sort of material, which element may be folded down or collapsed upon the contents of the carton, so as to form a sort of cover for the goods in shipment or storage and which may be readily expanded into the form of a stepped series of shelves for the display of the goods contained within the carton.
Another object is to provide ashipping carton for merchandise, whereby the goods may be packed and shipped in the usual compact form, the said carton, however, having an extensible element forthe display of the same goods upon a counter.
A further object is to provide a blank of flexible material adapted to form an insert, including integrally connected central and wing portions, the central portion being suitably stamped, formed, out and scored for forming a series of collapsible and extensible,
stepped shelves for supporting and displaying merchandise, and the wing portions being correspondingly cut to form lateral supporting elements for the central portion and the stepped shelves thereof when expanded.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton equipped with this invention, the stepped insert being shown in erected or expanded position;
Figure 2 is a similar perspective view, the said stepped insertbeing shown in collapsed position; 7
Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank of fibre board, the same being properly scored or stamped for forming the middle, stepped section of the said insert, and the two integrally connected side supporting wings of the said insert;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of an insert 1927. Serial INo, 196,190.
element for any conventional form-of fiat recv tangular carton, this said element being. the V essence of my invention, and being shown in this figure in expanded form;
Figure 5 is-aplan view of the insert element in expanded form.
In carrying out this'in vention, I provide a blank 1 of any suitably flexible material,such as fibre-board, strawb'oard, pasteboard or sheet metal, and out, score and mark the same 1.6 for forming the central, stepped section 2 of thesaid insert, and the two integrally connected, side supporting wings 8. Upon the said central portion 2, I score or mark a pluralityvoftransverse, parallel and properly spaced flexure lines 4, thereby defining a head piece 5', a tail piece6 and intermediate, stepped shelf portions 7, which are adapted to be erected or expandedone above the other and held in that relation at their fr'ontedges 1 by the riser portions 8; Brace tab portions 16 are also cut partly free from the head piece 5, on the lines 17 parallelwith the edges 12 of the central portion 2. correspondingly the wing portions 3 are cut to form the stepped, shelf supporting bearings 9, the riser abutments 10 and the backwardly extending brace portions 18. Wing flexure lines 11 slightly inset with relation to the adjacent parallel edges 12 ofthe centralportion 2 of the blank 1, serve to demark the said integrally connected portions 2 and 3. The blank as thus formed and prepared may be attached to anyconventional form of carton 13, by fastening the tail piece 6 to the inner 3 face of oneend of the cart-on, as shown at 14.
In use the insert may be readily folded down in flat form upon the goods in the carton, by turning the wing portions 3 up imderneath the central portion 2. The usual cover (not shown) maythen be placed upon the carton, and the carton is then ready for shipment or storage. An attractive counter display of the goods is readily made by simply expanding the shelves 7, turning down the side wings 3 within the sides of the carton and adjusting the shelves 7 properly upon the bearings 9 of the wings 3. The braces 18 abutting against an end of the carton, serve to prevent the expanded insert from acci- Lem I,
dentally collapsing; and the brace tabs 16, being bent backwardly at their free ends and having those ends set upon the upper edges of the braces 18, serve to maintain the head piece 5 in its vertical position. Any desired advertising may be printed upon the head piece 5.
While I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing 1 and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose in tended, as defined in the appended claims.
claim:
1. A display insert for a carton consisting of a blank of flexible material, the same comprising a central portion forming a series of go ingedly connected extensible and collapsible stepped shelves, and side supports integrally connected directly to the side edges of the stepped shelves and arranged to swing laterally to a position directly beneath the stepped shelves, whereby when the display insert is set up it will be closed at the top, front and sides and open at the back and bottom to enable it to be placed within the carton over the contents thereof, the open back so afiording access to the contents of the carton.
2. A display insert for a carton constructed of flexible material and consisting of a series of stepped shelves hingedly connected 85 so as to collapse, and stepped side supports located wholly beneath the shelves and hinged at the top directly to the side edges of the stepped shelves so as to swing laterally with respect thereto, the said insert when set u being open at the bottom and back to enable it to be placed within a carton over the contents thereof and being closed at the top, A
sides and front to protect the contents, the open back affording access to the contents of t e said carton.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN P. MOHEN.
