SAMU/:L /Zor lm/6 This invention relates to improvements in cartons or trays and particularly to such cartons or trays which cooperate with the formation of the goods therein in retaining the said goods against displacement from the carton or tray.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a carton or tray into which goods, such as cans having a chime, at least, at one end thereofv are disposed and which carton or tray is provided, at least, in one wall thereof with means that cooperates with the goods in retaining same in operative position.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a carton or tray that accomplishes the foregoing object that is economical to produce and acquire.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a carton or tray that will accomplish the foregoing objects and in which the said carton or tray is retained in operative position without the use of adhesive, glue or any other fastening ymeans other than that inherent in the material, cardboard, of which the said carton or tray is produced.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a carton or tray for retaining therein packaged goods which while it may beproduced and erected without the use of glue, adhesive or the like, may have certain parts thereof retained in operative position through said adhesive, glue or other agency.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a carton or tray formed of a single blank and including hold-down means as part of its walls construction for cooperating with packaged goods therein to prevent dis'- association of the said packaged goods and the said carton or tray.
A still further and specific object of the present invention is the provision of a four sided or walled carton or tray adapted to receive cans, Whether circular in crosssection or rectangular in cross-section or of any other cross-section, with their axes extending longitudinally or transversely of the tray or carton bottom, as distinguished from said can or cans having the axes thereof upstanding to said carton or tray bottom, and which carton or tray is provided in two opposed walls with tabs cooperating with chimes from opposite ends of the can or cans to prevent disassociation of the said can or cans and carton or tray.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modifications may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

Throughout the several views of the drawings similar reference characters are employed to denote the same or similar parts.
As will be noted from the drawings several modifications of the underlying structure and principles of the present invention are disclosed, and said several modifications will be described in succession by specifically pointing out the diiference between the modifications.
Accordingly and referring to the modification disclosed in FIGS. l to 5, inclusive, the blank therein is substantially rectangular in plan and includes a central or bottom panel 26 having its edges deiined by score or fold lines 27, 28, 29 and 34). The score or fold lines 27 and 29 may be termed the ends of the panel 26 while the score or fold lines 28 and 30 may be termed the sides of said panels. 'Ihese terms have through usage become known to mean the shorter and longer sides of a carton or tray and said end scores or fold lines 27 and 29 respectively integrally, hingedly, connect with the panel 26 similar extensions 31 which form similar end walls for the carton or tray and will be subsequently described in detail, and, similarly, the side score or fold lines 28 and 30 integrally, hingedly, connect with the panel 26 similar extensions 32 which respectively form similar carton or-tray side walls and which will be described in detail hereinafter.
Each of the end wall extensions 31 is provided with a score or fold line 33 parallel with the score or fold line connecting it with the panel 26. The said extensions scores or fold lines 33, respectively, provides in its extension a pair of panels 34 and 35 with said panel 34, in the erected carton or tray, forming the end wall outer wall member and having its opposite ends defined by score or fold lines 36 and 37, respectively, in alignment with the side score or fold lines 28 and 29.
The central or bottom panel 26 is provided inwardly of each of its end score or fold lines 27 and 29 with a U shaped cut 38 whereby, as will subsequently be made clear, the erection of the end walls provide the outer wall members or panels thereof 34 with a downwardly projecting tongue 39 and the panel 26 with an opening 39', see FIG. 3, of a configuration and area substantially equal to the said tongue 39. Each of the end Walls inner wall members or panels 35 is provided outwardly of its outer end with a tongue 40 adapted, as will subsequently be made clear, to cooperate with its bottom panel aperture 39' in locking the walls in their erected positions.
Each of the side wall extensions 32 is provided with a score or fold line 41 and an interrupted score or fold line 42 and which are parallel with one another and with the score or fold line connecting said extension to the panel 26. Said score or fold lines 41 and 42 form, in effect, in the side wall extensions a plurality of panels 43, 44 and 45 with said panel 43 in the erected carton forming, in each side wall, the side wall outer Wall member which has its lateral ends defined by score or fold lines 46 and 47 and which are, in effect, continuations of panel 26 end scores or fold lines 27 and 29.
In the erected carton the panel 44 forms, in each side wall, a side wall inner wall member while the panel 45 constitutes or forms a glue ap for partially securing the inner wall members or panels 44 in operative positions and for which purposes the said panels or glue aps 45 are each provided with a band of adhesive 48.
As illustrated in FIG. l each of the side walls inner wall members or panels 44 is provided with spaced pairs of cut lines 49 and 50 and which lines have their ends short of the longitudinal edge of the panel 44, as, respectively, defined by the score of fold lines 41 and 42. Each pair of said cut lines 49 and 50 have the ends thereof remote from the score or fold line 41 or 42 joined by an arcuately shaped cut line 51 and each of which cut lines 51 extends into the panel or glue fiap 45. Said area defined between said cut lines 49, 50 and 51 define between them a tongue or hold-down fiap 52.
There is shown in the drawings three tongues or holddown aps 52 in each side wall inner wall member, but it is to be understood, and as will later be pointed out in connection with other modifications, said tongues may be increased or decreased in number depending upon the number of goods packages to be disposed in the said carton or tray after erection. It should further be noted, and again, as will be pointed out in connection with a modification that each tongue 52 instead of having an arcuate end as at 51 may have a plain or straight end depending upon the form and contour of goods packages being disposed in the erected carton or tray.
In order to hold the side and end walls in erected operative position there is provided between adjacent ends of said walls a corner piece 53 which, respectively and specifically, is connected with an end wall outer wall member or panel 34 through either said end wall outer wall members end score 36 or 37 and with said corner piece being connected with the adjacent end of a side wall outer wall member or panel 43 through either of its end scores 46 or 47. In operation said corner pieces are adapted to be folded on themselves bellowswise and wherefore each corner piece is provided with a diagonal score or fo1d une s4.
The blank of FIG. 1 after being cut and scored as just described has applied at its panels or side walls inner wall members glue flaps the glue strips 48 whereupon said panels or glue aps 45 are folded on their interrupted score or fold line 42 onto the upper surface of the panel 44, as seen in FIG. 1, to occupy the positions indicated by the dot and dash lines 5S. The said side walls outer Wall members or panels 44, with the glue aps 45 disposed thereon, are then inwardly folded on the score or fold lines 41 to occupy the positions illustrated in FIG. 2. The carton or tray is now in its knocked-down condition and it is in this condition that it is shipped to the user for erection and charging with packaged goods.
The user in erecting the carton from its knocked-down position in FIG. 2 does so by raising the side walls on their score or fold lines 28 and 30 to be normal to the main or bottom panel 26. The end walls extensions are now in the positions illustrated for and at the left hand end of FIG. 3 and in order that the said end walls may be erected the user, successively, inwardly, or bellowswise, folds the corner flaps 53 on their respective diagonal score or fold lines 54 while at the same time raising the end wall extension to dispose the outer wall member or panel 34 normal to the main or bottom panel 26. The user then inwardly folds the end wall inner wall member or panel 35, said folding being continued until the locking `lub 40 snaps into the opening 39 left by the tongue 39 upon the raising of said end wall outer wall member. After raising each end wall the said end walls arenow in the position illustrated for the end wall at the right hand end of FIG. 3.
The carton is adapted to have packed and displayed therein goods packages or cans such as illustrated in FIG. 6. Such a can comprises a cylindrical body portion 56 to the opposite ends of which are secured end mem bers and which are substantially identical to one another. Said end members, as illustrated in section in FIG. 7 for one end member, comprise a body portion 57 of an area substantially equal the interior of the cylindrical body portion 56 and the said end members and body portions are secured to one another by means of a metal seam 58 at the periphery of the said end members. This metal seam, as is well known, consists of folding the parts on one another and through judicial crimping or cramping the said folds are secured to provide a leak-proof joint between the parts. In order that the said parts be secured to one another the end members are generally depressed thereby resulting in an outwardly projecting flange 59 from the ends of the can or goods package and which projecting ange is designated in the trade as a chime. The metal seam likewise generally results in an outwardly projecting rib 60 at each end of the can or goods package circumferentially thereof.
In the present invention it is the chimes at the ends of the goods package or can which are employed to effect a connection between the carton or tray and the packaged goods. As illustrated in FIG. 4 the erected carton, such as is illustrated in FIG. 3, has the tongues 52 inwardly projecting from the erected side walls and as illustrated in FIG. 7 said side walls are spaced from one another a distance substantially equal to the length of the packaged goods or can. In order to connect the packaged goods or can with the carton or tray, the said goods package or can is merely pushed into the open upper end of the tray until it engages with the bottom panel 26. It is obvious that as the said can is lowered into the tray the chimes 59 displace the tongues 52, as seen in FIG. 4, until said chimes are below the lower edge of the tongues whereupon the said tongues snap into the depressions at the ends of the goods package or cans and thereby lodge above said chimes as clearly illustrated in FIG. 5. By this arrangement the locking tongues 52 effectively prevent disassociation of the goods and the carton. It should be noted that the connection of the parts is such that unless an instrument is used to dislodge the tongues 52 from the position occupied by same as illustrated in FIG. 7 the packaged goods or cans cannot be removed from the tray or carton except by tearing and destroying the said carton or tray.
It should further be noted that the inherent spring in the cardboard causes the said tongues 52 to inwardly project as illustrated in FIG. 4 and it is this same inherent spring in said material that permits it to be displaced upon the insertion of the can in the carton or tray and, again, it is this inherent spring in the material that reasserts itself to position the said tongues in their goods package or can locking positions as illustrated in FIG. 7.
rIhe modification in the carton or tray blank and the resulting carton or tray illustrated in FIGS. 8, 9 and l0 consists, essentially, in eliminating the glue flap or panel 45 `and of eliminating the material between the hold-down tongues 52, wherefore, the corresponding side wall inner wall member or panel 44 has projecting therefrom the tongues 52 with spaces 61 between adjacent tongues 52.
In addition the blank of FIG. 8 is illustrated as having a U-shaped cut 62 in its bottom panel 26 and which cuts 2 result in apertures in said bottom panel upon the erection of the side wall outer wall members or panels 43. It should be noted that these cuts and resulting apertures, 63, see FIG. 10, may be supplied in the blank of FIG. 1.
The purpose of the apertures 63 is to permit, if desired, the radially projecting rib 60 4of the goods package or can to project thereinto so that the said goods package or cans are supported solely on their body portions instead of on said radial ribs as illustrated in FIG. 7.
The blank of FIG. 8 may be supplied to the user in its fully extended position as illustrated in solid lines or the said inner wall members or panels 44 may be folded to the position indicated therefore in dot and dash lines at 64. The user in setting-up the carton of the blank of FIG. 8 follows the same steps as above set forth with respect to the blank of FIGS. l and 2. The erected carton from the blank yof FIG. 8, since the glue flap for the side walls inner wall members has been eliminated, has the locking tongues 52.' projecting into the interior of the carton at Ia greater angle than that illustrated in FIG. 4 but said holdwdown tongues or ears 52 offer no greater resistance 4to the insertion of goods packages or cans and the final result is identical.
The cartons or trays above described in connection with FIGS. 1 to 10, inclusive, were concerned particularly with the so called round can or cans of generally cylindrical form. Goods packages in the form of canlike containers may be rectangular in end plan such as is illustrated in FIGS. 14 and 15. Such a can-like container', except for its configuration in end plan, comprises the same elements as a round can, namely, a body portion 65 with ends 66 and 67 which are generally depressed to provide chimes such as 68 from the can end or bottom 66 and a chime 69 from the other can end or top 67.
It should be noted that the said can ends or top and bottom 66 and 67 may be identical, and as illustrated for the can end 66 in FIG. 15, or one of said can ends may be formed as illustrated for the can end 67 in FIG. 14, and which has been identified as a can top. This can top is provided with a projecting neck 4on which is disposed a cap 7i)` having a centrally depressed body portion to provide an outwardly projecting flange or chime 71.
The erected carton or tray of either FIG. 3 or FIG. 9 could be employed with the can of FIGS. 14 and 15 and particularly as regards the can enld 66 while the said can end 67 may result in some inconvenience to the use of the hold-down tongues or ears 5?. and 52 since it would have to t between the cap -chime 71 and the can end chime 69.
The modified box or carton illustrated in FIGS. 11 and l2 consists essentially in a specific arrangement of holddown tongues or ears particularly adapted for the specific can ends 66 and 67.
Accordingly the inner wall member or panel 44 of FIG. 11 is provided with two sets of similar holddown tongues or ears each comprising a central tongue or ear 72 lianke'd oneach side 'thereof by a relatively narrow tongue or ear 73 and 74. The tongues or ears 73 and 74 each has its outer edge formed as substantially a straight line cut 7S which outwardly project beyond the circular cut edge 76 of the central tongue or ear 725. The purpose of the dissimilarity of the said hold-down ears or lugs will be subsequently pointed out.
In the blank of FIG. 11 the opposite inner wall member or panel 44' differs yfrom that above described in that it is provided with two relatively large hold-down tongues or ears each of which is identified by the reference numeral 77. The outer edge of each of the said tongues 77, similar to the outer edges of the tongues or ears 73 and 74, is defined by a straight line cut 78 and it should be noted that the said cut line 78 is outwardly of the axis of the blank substantially the same distance as the straight line cut 75I of the hold-down tongues or ears 73.
The blank of FIG. l1, similar to theblank of FIG. 8, may be supplied to the user in its extended condition and erected from the fiat by the said user by following the same steps as above, namely, inwardly folding the side walls inner wall members or panels 44 and 44"', upwardly raising the side wall extensions to be normal to the bottom panel, bellowswise folding the corner pieces while raising the end walls outer wall members and finally inwardly folding the end walls inner wall members to their final positions land then enfolding the bellowswise folded corner pieces. The erected carton is then in the condition as illustrated therefor in FIGS. 12, 13, 16 and 17 and the carton or tray is ready to have inserted therein goods packages or cans, such as illustrated in FIGS. 14 and 15.
The said cans, as illustrated in FIGS. 14 and l5, are lowered into the carton or tray with the can end or bottom 66 adjacent the side wall that includes the inner wall member or panel 44' and with the other can end or top 67 adjacent the side wall that includes the inner wall member or panel 44". The hold-down tongues or ears 72, 73 and 74 bear such a relation to one another that upon the final positioning of the can the tongue or ear 72 snaps into the depression of the can cap to have its arcuate edge 76 above the chime 71 while at the same time the hold-down tongues or ears 73 and 74 snap into the depression of the can end or top on each side of the cap 70 to be above the chime 69 on said opposite sides of the cap 70. At the same time the hold-down tongue or ear 77 snaps into the depression of the can end or bottom 66 to be above its chime 68. From the foregoing it will be noted that the packaged goods o'r can as illustrated in FIGS. 14 and 15 is adequately and completely locked in its carton or container.
It should be noted, particularly in connection with the description above, that the blank of FIG. 11 and its resulting carton of FIG. 12 is adapted to contain but two units of goods packages or cans while the modifications illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 9 are adapted to contain three units of goods packages or cans. It is cbvious that the blank of FIG. 11 may be extended to include three units of goods packages or cans and that the cartons or trays of FIGS. 3 and 9 may be decreased to accommodate but two units of goods packages or cans. It is also obvious that either of the modifications heretofore described, and those to be subsequently described, may be modified to accommodate but a single unit of goods packages or cans or may be extended to include more than three units of goods packages or cans.
'Ihe relative positions of the hold-down tongues or lugs of the blank of FIG. 11 and the resulting carton inv FIG. 12 with respect to the goods packages are clearly 7 illustrated in FIG. 16 for the said goods package or can top end and in FIG. 17 for the goods package or can bottom end 66.
The modifications above described were primarily concerned with packaged goods or cans having substantially parallel end surfaces as defined by the outer ends of the chimes. Liquid or semi-liquid goods, and even powdered goods, are frequently packed in cans having a pouring spout projecting from one of its ends, generally referred to as its top. Such a goods package or can is illustrated in FIG. 22 and which comprises a substantially cylindrical body portion 79 having a can end or bottom 80 including a projecting chime 81. The body portion 79 has a can end or top 82 at its other end and from which projects a reduced spout, neck, or the like and on which is disposed a cap 83 which projects well ahead of the upper surfaces of the can end or top 82.
There is illustrated in FIGS. 18, 19 and 20 a modified blank and carton for the goods package or can of FIG. 22. In the blank of FIG. 18 the inner wall member has, in effect, been eliminated in so far as one side wall is concerned and in its stead the said side Wall outer wall member 43' has connected thereto a plurality of substantially circular discs 84, which are hold-down tongues or ears, each hinged-ly connected through a score or fold line 85 with the normal or upper edge of the side wall outer wall member or panel 43'. The opposite side wall has connected to its outer wall member or panel 43 through the score or fold line 41 a relatively narrow panel 86 in turn, through a score or fold line 87, having connected thereto a panel 88 carrying at its outer end, through the medium of a score or fold line 89, a glue ap 90.
The said panels 43, 86, 88 and 90 form between them a hollow wall, that is, a wall including spaced apart inner and outer wall members with the said panel 43 forming the outer wall member, the panel 86a spacer or top wall member, the panel 88 an inner wall member and the glue ap 90 securing the said panels, upon erection, in their operative spaced apart relation. The said glue fiap 90 is therefore provided on its undersurface, as seen in FIG. 18, with adhesive 91.
For the purpose of strengthening said hollow side wall its inner wall member or panel 88 is provided at its opposite ends with tucking flaps 92 and 93 respectively connected with its end of said inner wall member through a score or fold line 94 or 9S. For the purpose of locking the walls in their erected position the said inner wall member or panel 88 is provided adjacent its lower corners with slots 96 and 97 receiving locking lugs 98 located at an outer corner of each of the end walls inner wall members or panels 35. The said inner wall member or panel 88 is further provided with a plurality ofl apertures 99, there being one such aperture for each hold-down tongue or ear 84 in the opposite side Wall.
After the blank of FIG. 18 has been cut and scored as above described and illustrated and the adhesive or glue 91 applied to the glue flap 90 said glue fiap is inwardly folded onto the inner wall member or panel 88 to the position illustrated therefor in dot and dash lines and indicated by the reference numeral 100. The inner wall member or panel 88 with the glue fiap thereon and the top wall member 86 are then folded inwardly on the ecore or fold line 41 for bringing the adhesive 91 into engagement with the bottom panel 26 whereupon pressure is applied for adhesively securing the parts to one another. The blank is now in its knocked-down carton position as illustrated in FIG. 19 and it is in this condition that it is shipped to the user.
The user upon desiring to erect the carton from the knocked-down carton of FIG. 19 does so by following substantially the same steps as above set forth for the other modifications. The raising of the hollow side wall from its knocked-down position automatically positions the several wall members thereof at right angles to one another with the inner and outer wall members spaced 8 from one another and with the apertures 99 in the inner wall member 88 communicating with the interior of the erected hollow Wall.
It will be obvious from FIG. 20 that the ing flaps 92 and 93 of each end wall are disposed transversely of the bottom panel in the manner of the positioning of said tucking iiap for the lower or left hand of FIG. 20. In the erecting the end wall, as illustrated for the upper or right hand end of FIG. 2f), the inner wall member not only has the locking lug 40 of its end wall member snapped into its locking aperture in the bottom panel 26 but the said inner wall member also has its lateral locking lug 98 snapped into the slot 96 or 97 in the inner wall member or panel 88.
The user in desiring to insert the goods package or can, as illustrated in FIG. 22, does so by first inserting its projection or cap 83 into the desired aperture 99 whereupon the other end of the said goods package is lowered into the carton or tray for first displacing the retaining tongue or ear 84 from its normal position illustrated in FIG. I2.1 and then permitting the said retaining tongue or ear 84 to snap above its chime 81 and thereby lock the packaged goods within the tray or carton.
The attachment of the ends to the body portion of the goods packages or cans has been referred to has a metal seam thereby implying that the said body portion of the goods package or can or container is metal, but it is to be noted that the said goods package or can or container body portion may be of other material such as heavy cardboard or the like as is well known and the attachment to said cardboard body of the ends is effected through a quite similar connection and therefore may be considered as a metal seam with said end closures each including a chime outwardly projecting and at the same time a rib radially projecting.
In each of the examples of a goods package or can or container above illustrated and described the end plan view thereof is round or rectangular with or Without a central projection. It is to be noted that goods packages or cans or containers having other configurations in end plan may readily be accommodated by modifications in the carton or tray herein illustrated and described. There is illustrated in FIG. 24 several modifications of goods packages or cans or containers which have in the past been produced and which may be employed with the modifications of the carton or tray above described. It should be noted, however, that the hold-down tongues or ears may be readily modified to cooperate with any one of the herein disclosed variations in goods packages or cans or containers so long as the same is provided with a chime, indicated in each of the goods packages or cans or containers in FIG. 24 by the reference numeral 101 and which chime surrounds the body portion of the end closure, again, indicated in each of the modifications in FIG. 24 by the reference numeral 162.
From the foregoing it is believed now evident that there has now been provided a carton or tray that will accomplish the objects initially set forth and the intent of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A tray for use'with a goods package container having, at least, a depression and a chime at one end thereof, said tray comprising a supporting bottom panel, upstanding walls from the bottom panel, two of said walls being oposite one another and adjacent one of said walls said chimed end of the goods package container is disposed with its chime on the tray supporting bottom panel and with the other end of said goods package container disposed adjacent the other of said opposite walls, said opposite walls being of a height less than the height of the chimed end of the container and said wall adjacent which the container chimed end is disposed comprising a wall member integral with and upstanding from the tray supporting bottom panel, an inner wall member aora-liao carried by the outer wall member depending within the tray and extending in substantial parallelism with its outer wall member inner face, a glue ap carried by the inner wall member folded onto said inner wall member to be therebeneath and secured to the outer wall membei' for securing said inner wall member in operative position, and a hold-down tongue of greater length than the width of the inner wall member carried by said inner wall member and of less width and height than the portion of the goods package container end depression covered by the adjacent tray wall with said hold-down tongue on said glue hap to automatically, inwardly and downwardly project from the inner wall member to be within the said goods package end depression and extend to a point to be above and against the container chime for clamping the container e-nd chime between itself and the tray supporting bottom panel.
2. In a device of the class described a tray comprising `a supporting bottom panel from the edges of which upstand walls with two of said walls opposite one another, a goods package container within said tray and with its ends, respectively, adjacent one of the tray opposite walls,
said goods package container having at each of its ends a recessed end member each including a chime on the tray supporting bottom panel, said opposite walls being of a height less than the height of the recessed end member adjacent thereto and said tray opposite walls each including an outer wall member integral with and upstanding from the tray supporting bottom panel, an inner wall member integral with each oute-r wall member depending within the tray and extending in substantial parallelism with its outer wall member inner face, a glue flap carried by each inner wall member folded onto its inner wall member to be therebeneath and secured to the outer wall member inner surface for securing said inner wall members in operative position, and a retaining tongue of greater length than the width of the inner Wall member carried by each inner wall member and of less width and height than the portion of the goods package container end member recess covered by the adjacent tray wall with said retaining tongues on said glue aps to automatically angularly inwardly project from each inner wall member and disposed within the goods package container end members recesses adjacent thereto to be above and in contact with the chimes thereof clamping the container end chimes between themselves and the tray supporting bottom panel.
3. In a device of the class described a tray comprising a supporting bottom panel from the edges of which upstand walls with two of said walls opposite one another, ya `goods package container within said tray and with an end, respectively, adjacent one of the tray opposite walls, said goods package container having at each of its ends a recessed end member each including a chime on the tray supporting bottom panel, said opposite walls being of a height less than the height of the recessed end member adjacent thereto and said tray opposite walls each including an outer wall member integral with and upstanding from the tray supporting bottom panel, an inner wall member integral with each outer wall member depending within the tray and extending in substantial parallelism with its outer wall member inner face, a glue flap carried by each inner wall member folded onto its inner wall member to be therebeneath :and secured to the outer wall member inner surface for securing said inner wall members in operative position, and a retaining tongue of greater length than the width of the inner wall member carried by each inner wall member and of less width and height than the portion of the goods package con- 10 tainer end member recess covered by the adjacent tray wail with said retaining tongues on said glue aps to automatically angularly inwardly project from each inner wall member and disposed within the goods package container end members recesses adjacent thereto to be above and in Contact with the chimes thereof clamping the ycontainer end chimes between themselves and the tray supporting bottom panel, said goods package container having an end elevation and chime substantially circular in plan and said retaining tongue having its free edge arcuately formed to cooperate with the contour of the chime. Y

Claims (1)

1. A TRAY FOR USE WITH A GOODS PACKAGE CONTAINER HAVING, AT LEAST, A DEPRESSION AND A CHIME AT ONE END THEREOF, SAID TRAY COMPRISING A SUPPORTING BOTTOM PANEL, UPSTANDING WALLS FROM THE BOTTOM PANEL, TWO OF SAID WALLS BEING OPOSITE ONE ANOTHER AND ADJACENT ONE OF SAID WALLS SAID CHIMED END OF THE GOODS PACKAGE CONTAINER IS DISPOSED WITH ITS CHIME ON THE TRAY SUPPORTING BOTTOM PANEL AND WITH THE OTHER END OF SAID GOODS PACKAGE CONTAINER DISPOSED ADJACENT THE OTHER OF SAID OPPOSITE WALLS, SAID OPPOSITE WALLS BEING OF A HEIGHT LESS THAN THE HEIGHT OF THE CHIMED END OF THE CONTAINER AND SAID WALL ADJACENT WHICH THE CONTAINER CHIMED END IS DISPOSED COMPRISING A WALL MEMBER INTEGRAL WITH AND UPSTANDING FROM THE TRAY SUPPORTING BOTTOM PANEL, AN INNER WALL MEMBER CARRIED BY THE OUTER WALL MEMBER DEPENDING WITHIN THE TRAY AND EXTENDING IN SUBSTANTIAL PARALLELISM WITH ITS OUTER WALL MEMBER INNER FACE, A GLUE FLAP CARRIED BY THE INNER WALL MEMBER FOLDED ONTO SAID INNER WALL MEMBER TO BE THEREBENEATH AND SECURED TO THE OUTER WALL MEMBER FOR SECURING SAID INNER WALL MEMBER IN OPERATIVE POSITION, AND A HOLD-DOWN TONGUE OF GREATER LENGTH THAN THE WIDTH OF THE INNER WALL MEMBER CARRIED BY SAID INNER WALL MEMBER AND OF LESS WIDTH AND HEIGHT THAN THE PORTION OF THE GOODS PACKAGE CONTAINER END DEPRESSION COVERED BY THE ADJACENT TRAY WALL WITH SAID HOLD-DOWN TONGUE ON SAID GLUE FLAP TO AUTOMATICALLY, INWARDLY AND DOWNWARDLY PROJECT FROM THE INNER WALL MEMBER TO BE WITHIN THE SAID GOODS PACKAGE END DEPRESSION AND EXTEND TO A POINT TO BE ABOVE AND AGAINST THE CONTAINER CHIME FOR CLAMPING THE CONTAINER END CHIME BETWEEN ITSELF AND THE TRAY SUPPORTING BOTTOM PANEL.
