This invention relates to new and useful improvements in corrugated paper boxes, or like receptacles, and has particular' reference to the lids and manner of attaching the same to the receptacles.
In the use of tall receptacles which are made of corrugated paper, and which have the ends removable, great difficulty has been experienced in properly securing such ends within the receptacles. Ordinarily gummed paper strips are used to-secure the ends to the sides of thereceptacles, but this is difhcult of accomplishment, due to the fact that no adequate means are provided for supporting the end, within the receptacle. j
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel means for supporting the end of a receptacle, Vof the character named, within the receptacle, and a locking means, associated with the supporting means, for holding the end in proper position, against unauthorized removal, -it being necessary to destroy the endbefore it can be removed.
Another' object is to provide a supporting and locking device of this character, which is simple incon'struction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be readily applied to boxes, of this character, now in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following descriptionwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the upper portion of a corrugated paper receptacle, which is polygonal in shape, the upper end of each side of the receptacle being turned downwardly into the receptacle, in the form of tabs, as shown at 11. rugated paper and having its periphery cut to properly fit within the end of the receptacle, and press said tabs against the inner faces yof the said sides.
Secured to a number of the said tabs 11 are the metal plates 13, each of which is formed with the tangs 14, piercing the tab and clinched on the opposite side thereof. The opposite vertical edges of the plate 13 are bent outwardly to form the flanges 15, while the lower end of the plate is bent to extend horizontally, as at 16, from the body of the plate. In the intermediate portion of plate 13, and near the lower end thereof, there is formed a vertical elongated opening 17, and in the intermediate portion of the inner edge of the iauge 16 there is formed a notch registering with the lower end of the said opening 17.

After the cover has been properly placed within the end of the receptacle, so that it rests on the ledes 1G, of the plates 13, the locking member, represented as a whole by On this ledge, or flange 16, the end or cover 12 rests, as clearly seen in Figures 1 the numeral 18, and as shown specifically in detail in Figure 4, is properly inserted. This locking member 18 comprises a body portion 19, of a width to properly fit between the flanges 15, of the plate 13, and has the outturned linger-grip 20, on its upper end, which is grasped by the operator to manipulate the member into locking position. Extending centrally from the lower end of the body 19 is an elongated and pointed tongue 21, and intermediate the length of the tongue there is struck out an upwardly and outwardly in clined tab 22. The body of the plate 19 is cut upwardly, from the lower edge, on lines which are continuations of the sides of the tongue. It will be particularly noted that the tongue is bent backwardly to a slight degree whereby to exert a spring action against the outer face of the plate 13, and to better engage the tab or detent 22 with the downturned portion of the flange 16, shown at 23, and which tab results from the formation of the slot 17.
In the operation of the invention, the cover or end is slipped into the end of the receptacle until it rests on the ledges 16, of the plates 13. The operator, being provided with a number Of the locking members 18, inserts the tongue 21 of one of said locking members in the slot 17, of one of the plates 13, and forces said tongue downwardly through the said slot member 18 to the plateV 13, While at the same time the finger-grip 20 engages en the., appel face of the cover' or end and Yholds the latter aga-inst upward movement.
