C ONTAINER COVER FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 12, I921.

INVENTOR. Earl Klussner A TTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL KLO SSNER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
CONTAINER-COVER FASTENER.
Application filed November 12, 1921. Serial No, 514,611.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL KmssNun, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the countyof Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Container- Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in container cover fasteners and is more especially designed for use in connection with cheese containers or boxes.
At the present time, it is customary to secure cheese box or container covers or tops by driving nails through the cover or top flange into the box side wall. This manner of securing the covers has resulted in a tremendous loss in that the nails oftentimes split the boxes and permit accidental dislodgment of the cover, and furthermore the nails oftentimes puncture the cheese, rusting and causing its destruction.
With the above and other objections in mind, it is an object of this invention to provide fastening means whereby the fastener is guarded from contact with the cheese and firmly, but detachably, secures the cover to the box.
It is another object of this invention to provide a box cover fastener which is preferably formed from a single strip of metal and which is capable of ready attachment to the cover without necessitating the employment of any special machinery or tool whatever.
A further object of this invention is to provide a fastener more especially designed for use in connection with cheese box covers which will positively prevent the accidental detachment from the box and at the same time permit the removal of the cov r without destroying the fastener, or container, the cover being removed by pressing inwardly on the container side walls adjacent each fastener.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a contamer equipped with my improved cover fasteners;
Figure 2 is a sectional view through a portion of the container cover, and
Figure 3 isa perspective view of one of my improved fasteners detached from' the cover.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a box or container of any desired shape, design or construction, and 6 a cover or top therefor having an annular, depending side flange 7 engageable over the upper edge of the container, as is common in such constructions.
My inventionris more especially designed for use in connection with containers of that type used for the transportation of cheese in which the cover flange 7 is formed by a strip of wood tacked around the periphery of cover 6, and the container sides are formed of substantially light material capable of being flexed inwardly under pressure.
To the cover 6, at spaced intervals, two or more of my improved fasteners are attached, each fastener being )referably formed of a single length of strlp metal 8 having its ends folded or bent upon its medial portion, as at 9 and 10, end 10 being preferably engageab'le between flange 7 and cover 6 to position end 9 next to the cover flange inner periphery.
The strip 8 is preferably of resilient'metal, such as spring steel or the like, so that end 9 will be normally urged inwardly from thecover flange to engage the adjacent portion of container 5 when the cover is engaged thereover. Struck from end 9 are one or more outwardly and upwardly inclined portions 11 forming teeth which bite into the container when the cover is sought to be removed, as clearly shown in the drawings.
To remove the cover,-the wall of the con tainer, adjacent each fastener, is pressed inwardly to disengage teeth 11 therefrom, or a flat member, such as a knife blade or the like, is inserted between each fastener end 9 and the box side wall to disengage the teeth 11, as will be readily apparent. It will be obvious that the fasteners need no means of attachment to the cover and the services of a skilled person are not required to apply the same to the cover.
Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In an article of manufacture, the combination with a container and a removable cover therefor, of means for securing the cover to the container and consisting of a spring member carried by said cover and resiliently urged therefrom to engagement with the adjacent side wall portion of the container, and means on said member and engageable with the container side wall to prevent the accidental detachment of the cover therefrom.
2. In an article of manufacture, the combination with a container and a removable cover therefor, of means for securing the cover to the container and consisting of a spring member carried by said cover and resiliently urged therefrom to engagement with the adjacent side wall portion of the container, and a tooth on said spring member and engageable with the container side wall to prevent the accidental detachment of the cover therefrom.
3. In an article of the character described, the combination with a container and a removable cover therefor, of means for securing the cover to the container and consisting of a spring member carried by said cover and resiliently urged therefrom to engagement with the adjacent side wall portion of the container, and a tooth on said spring member and engageable with the container side wall to prevent the detachment of the cover therefrom, said cover being capable of detachment from the container by the exertion of pressure on the container side wall adjacent the fastener to disengage the tooth therefrom.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
CARL KLOSSNER.
