SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,227, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed September 20, 1901. Serial No. 75.758. (No model.)
tic City, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Label-Retainers for Salve-Boxes, Ointment-Boxes, duo.
' of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in means for attaching labels to box-lids, and is more especially adapted to those formed of metal, whereby the use of mucilage or other adhesive material is obviated.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box-lid embodying my invention, showing the label in position, partly broken away. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of said lid, showing also a box in dotted line. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional View of a box-lid of slightly different construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a box-lid, which is preferably formed of metal and composed of the side B and top 0, integral therewith or continuous thereof. E designates a label, which is rested on the top B and confined thereon, "as follows: The upper end of the side and the peripheral portion of the lid are united by a seam, the double thickness of said partsbeing bent inwardly and downwardly toward thelabel, forming the depending rim on the interior of the top of the lid, so as to overhang the peripheral portion of said top and confine the peripheral portion of said label beneath said rim D, presenting a smooth or uncut edge to said label that will not cut and release the same, it being evident that the label is controlled by said rim D from above, and so is prevented from displacement, it being also evident that the use .every instance to the exact construction as herein shown and described, for while I have shown a round box I may make the same square or other shaped.
I claim 1. A lid having its top and sides integral,
the entire top of said lid being depressed leaving a doubled peripheral flange extending thereabove, said flange being curved inwardly and downwardly to engage a label resting upon said lid.
2. A lid having its top and sides integral,
the entire top of said lid being depressed leaving a doubled peripheral flange extending thereabove, said flange being curled inwardly and downwardly upon a label resting uponsaid lid and forming an annular molding of substantially semicircular cross-section.
