To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB DANZ, 2d, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal pails, its object being to provide an improved form of closure which may be firmly wedged within the opening of an ordinary lard pail filling the space within the top of the pail and constituting a cover which may be more easily and conveniently used than the ordinary inclosing form.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter partlcularly descrlbed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side View of my improved pail and cover partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a similar View of a modified construction; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified construction partly broken away, showing the pail and cover separated, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of another modified form with the cover in closing position.
In the drawings A represents a pail having flaring side wall formed with a beaded or curled top or edge 2.
B represents the cover therefor which is shown in Fig. 1 and is constructed to fit within the top of the pail, having side wall 3 flared to correspond with the flare of the side wall of the pail. The bottom of the cover is formed with an upwardly bent central portion 4. The outer wall 3 of the cover is bent to form a flange or curl 6 which receives the edge of a top plate 7 and which rests upon the curled edge 2 of the pail. The top plate is formed with corrugations 8 and is provided with a suitable handle 9. In order to cause the cover to more closely fit within the pail I provide a lid 10 of very thin tin or other material shaped to conform to the bottom of the cover.
In operation the lid 10 will first be inserted into the top of the pail and the cover B then forced into the top of the pail and into the lid 10, tightly wedging the side wall of the lid between the side walls of the cover and pail, as shown in Fig. 1. An exception Specification of Letters Patent.

in construction to the main portion of the cover B. The cover C wedges tightly in the top of the pail with its curled edge resting upon thecurled edge of the pail.
The form shown in Fig. 3 is similar to the form shown in Fig. 1 except that the outer curled edge of the cover is formed by bending the top plate over the edge of the side wall of the cover.
In Fig. 4 the cover D, corresponding to the cover 0, and the main portion of the cover 13, is carried over the beaded edge 2 of the pail and downward to grip the side of the bead instead of merely resting upon the top thereof.
My cover is of particular value in sealing lard pails. WVhen a pail is filled with lard the lard will upon hardening settle below the top of the pail, and my improved form of cover upon being inserted into the pail will form a tight closure and will fill the space between the lard and the top edge of the pail. In case the lard is not settled suiiiciently to stand entirely below the bot-tom of the cover, the upwardly curved center of the cover will constitute a space into which the lard will be squeezed. Also the curled upper edge of the cover extending as it does over the top edge of the pail admits of the cover being very easily removed.
The supplementary lid 10 is especially designed for use where the cover is to be employed as a summer cover, making as it does, a particularly tight wedging closure between. the main cover and the pail. It may be made of any comparatively thin material.
I claim 1. In combination a sheet metal lard pail having at its mouth an outwardly curled edge, and a sheet metal cover made in one piece and formed with a flared side wall 3 adapted to fit tightly under compression and with friction within the mouth of the pail, the said cover being also formed with an upwardly bent central portion 4 forming a receiving space for excess of lard, and with an annular inwardly extending portion between the lower part of the flared wall 3 and the said central portion 4 and a top plate 7 corrugated and engaged within the top edge of the cover, substantially as set forth.
