7 c. VON ALLMEN JAR CLOSURE Filed July 14 1921 F'iglQo awe/whoa Patented Aug. 7, l923.
CHRISTIAN VON ALLMEN, F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
JAR CLOSURE.
Application filed July 14, 1921.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN Von ALL- MEN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Jar Closures; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention showing the jar in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a transverse central sectional view of the invention showing the jar in full lines.
Figure 3 is a detail bottom plan view of the top of the jar. I
Figure t is a detail side view of the same partly broken away.
The invention has relation to jar and tumbler closures, having for an object to provide an improved lid or cover for the standard jar or tumbler of the type shown.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the standard jar or tumbler, having at the top thereof an annular ledge or projection 3, the circumferential side 4 of which is tapered or beveled slightly from below upwardly, said ledge having a horizontal bottom or lower shoulder 5, provided with an angular juncture with said side a of a little less than a right angle.
The top 6 is adapted to be stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and is provided with a circumferential side flange 7 which is tapered similarly to that of the side 4c of said ledge, said flange being cut away at intervals as shown at 8, the cut away portions or spaces extending about one half way upwardly of the height of the flange, leaving the upper portion of half of the flange intact in complete annular form, and the lower portion of the flange remaining as extensions 9 of said upper portion and terminating at their lower edges in inturned lips 9, having a substantially right angular relation to said extensions.
The extensions 9 have downwardly con- Serial No. 484,688.
verging ends 10, and the preferable extent of the spaces or cutaway portions 8 and of the extensions 9 is each about degrees, or sufficient to retain a pronouncedly arcuate nature, and to combine strength with a sufiicient degree of elasticity or spring to enable the extensions to be released from their engagement with the lower edge or shoulder of the annular top of the jar with comparative ease. It will be noted here that the flange 7 being retained entire at the upper portion thereof and the extensions 9 being of 60 measurement or thereabouts provides a very strong spring action for said extensions, which are not readily distorted in the removal of the lid, so that the latter may be reapplied to the jar as often as desired with equal effect in obtaining an air tight closure,'which latter is made more effective by the retention of the complete annular flange at the upper portion thereof as stated. The downturned tapering annular flange of the jar top is continuous annularly at the upper portion thereof and has annularly continuous close wedging engagement with the tapering circumferential wall of the top ledge of the jar.
The lips or bends 9 at the lower portion of the extensions 9 are of just sufficient inward projection to enable them to tightly hold the lid in position, without however preventing their ready release.
In Figure 4 of the drawings a modification of the invention is shown, wherein the central portion of the top of the lid is depressed to provide an annular groove 11 for the washer 12, and wherein there is pro vided for each of the extensions 9, a slight outwardly projecting ridge 13, within the groove 14 of which the prong of a fork or the like may be inserted to release the lid from the ar.
I claim 2- 1. In a jar closure, the combination with a jar having a top annular ledge having a continuous tapering circumferential wall, of a lid having a clown-turned annular tapering flange having annularly continuous close wedging engagement with said tapering wall, said flange having spring extensions integral therewith and releasably engaging the lower shoulder of said ledge.
2. In a jar closure, the combination with a jar having a top annular ledge having a continuous tapering circumferential wall and a lower shoulder, of a lid having a downturned annular tapering flange having annularly continuous close wedging engagement with said tapering wall, said flange having transversely arcuate spring extensions integral therewith and having inturned lower ends releasably engaging said lower shoulder.
3. In a jar closure, the combination with a jar having a top annular ledge having a con tinuous tapering circumferential wall and a lower shoulder, of a lid having a downturned annular tapering flange having annularly continuous close wedging engage ment with said tapering wall, said flange having transversely arcuate spring extensions integral therewith and having inturned lower ends releasably engaging said lower shoulder, said extensions having the inner surfaces thereof conforming to and closely C. VON ALLMEN.
