STEPHEN M. HAMBLIN AND GEORGE N. HAMBLIN, 0F CANTON, MASSACHUSETTS ASSIGNORS TO EUGENE L. TOOMEY, OF STOUGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MEANS FOR FACILITATING THE REMOVAL OF COVERS 0F CANS AND BOXES.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, STEPHEN M. I-IAM- nnniand GEORGE N. HAMBLIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Facilitating the Removal of Covers of Cans and Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In conformity with our invention we pro vide a projection upon the body of a can or box, and a second projection upon the cover, which are disalined vertically and are so related in position to each other when the cover is in place upon the body and the projections are in working positions with respect to each other, that a small flat object such as a coin, a key on the order of those used with Yale locks, a knife'blade, or any similarly shaped tool, article or implement may be inserted between the two projections and by a turning and prying action will operate to lift the cover so as to effect or facilitate the removal of the same. Preferably, we provide the parts with means to guide them in assembling the cover in connection with the body, so as to locate the two projections in the required working relations. This means may consist of a notch in the edge of one part, for instance the cover, to receive the projection on the other part, for instance the body.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which latter,-
Figure 1 shows in elevation a box and cover, the cover being fitted upon the box, and a coin being introduced edgewise between the two projections in readiness for being turned to pry the cover loose. Fig. 2 is a View showing the parts with the coin turned and the cover partly raised and loosened from the body.
Having reference to the drawings,-the body of the box shown therein is marked 1, and the cover is marked 2.
3 and 4, respectively, are the projections which are provided upon the box and cover, respectively, in conformity with our invention. In this instance, the said projections are in the shape of simple studs or pins standing out from the surfaces to which they Specification of Letters Patent.

are applied. The said projections are disaliued vertically, 2 e., are offset laterally with respect to each other, and are so applied to the body and cover that when the cover is fully home upon the body the two projections will stand at slightly different heights, although the precise relative position of the two projections is not material, so far as height is concerned, and variation is possible from what is shown in the drawing. The coin which in this instance is represented as being utilized for the purpose of effecting the removal of the cover is marked 6, and in Fig. 1 it is shown occupying a horizontal position with a portion of its edge inserted between the two projections 3 and t. In this instance, the means of insuring the proper relative placing of the two projections with respect to each other in applying the cover to the box consists of a notch 5 which is made in the free edge of the cover and is adapted to receive within the same the projection 3 of the body 1. This notch con1- p'els the parts to be 'so fitted together that the projections 3 and at shall stand with relation to each other substantially as indicated in Fig. 1. It will be obvious that a turning movement of the coin 6 around the projection 3 as a fulcrum will operate to force the cover 2 upward, as in Fig. 2, and release or dislodge the same.
The specific construction and arrangement -may be varied in practice moreor less. The
precise shape and size of the projections is not material.
We claim as our invention:
1. A box or the like comprising a body and a cover therefor, fitting together the one over the other, the said parts respectively having studs extending outward therefrom, disalined vertically and located substantially as described, adapted to receive between them a thin fiat article or implement, by turning which the cover may be forced from the body.
2. A box or the like comprising a body and a cover therefor, fitting together the one over the other, the said parts respectively having studs extending outward therefrom, disalined vertically and located substantially as described, adapted to receive between them a thin flat article or implement, by turning which the cover maybe forced from the body,
and means for insuring proper register or working relations of said projections with respect to each other.
3. The combination with the box-body having an outward projection 3, of a cover therefor having an outward projection 4, the said projections adapted to receive between them a thin article or implement by turning which the cover may be forced from the body, and one of the parts having a notch which receives the projection of the other part andinsures proper register or working relations of the projections with respect to each other.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signa- 15 tures, in presence of two witnesses.
