To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAV. MAIER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Schramberg, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Cover Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fastening devices for securing covers on boxes, more particularly on boxes of paper board or like material having covers which telescopically fit over said boxes, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive fastening means or lock made in whole or in part of the material of the box and its, cover, and when so made, formed simultaneously with the blank of said box and cover. This fastening which can be made with little or no additional expense forms a secure lock for holding covers on boxes that are used for mailing purposes, delivering merchandise and other articles, and for various other purposes unnecessary to mention, there being practically no danger of the cover becoming loosened or lost by accident orother cause, and furthermore by means of this lock the cover is held so securely that no extraneous fastenings, such as string, paper, or seals, are required, thus permitting a great saving in time as such fastenings are often not at hand when desired.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is perspective View of a covered box with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view' through one side of the box on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a ortion of the box covershowing that part 0 the fastening device formed therewith. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the box and the locking loop thereon. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 55 Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views showing modified forms of the invention.

In the drawings, 10 indicates a box which may be made of cardboard, paper-board, or other like material and 11 a cover therefor, which fits telescopically over the box, and may extend to the bottom thereof as shown, or to some point between the top or bottom as desired. Fastened to the box on one, two, or more sides, is a keeper preferably in the form of a flat loop 12 made in the present instance of thin sheet metal, said loop or loops projecting from the side or sides preferably a distance equal to the thickness of the material forming the box cover. The loops 12 are each made in the form of a staple with two straight parallellegs 13 connected by a straight strip. 14 that forms the outer portion of the staple, the legs 13 being forced through the side of a box and At suitable points in the sides of the cover 11 are formed tongues 16 made by cutting U-shaped slots 17 in said sides which may be done at the time the blanks for forming the cover are made. These tongues each engage a loop 12 by slipping thereinto as the cover is being placed upon the box, the loop 12 itself lying within the slot 17, the horizontal portion 17 thereof passingunder the lower edge of the loop, thereby forming a lock by means of which the cover is retained in place on the box. To remove the cover the lower portion 18 thereof below the tongue is sprungoutw'ardly as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, until released from said loop whereupon the cover may be easily withdrawn from the box. It is to be understood, of course, that each fastening device is to be disconnected in the same way before the cover is withdrawn. To render the act of disconnecting the fastening or lock more easy, that is, to give flexibility to the fasten ing I prefer to provide slots or notches 19 out upwardly from the lower edge of the cover on each side of the U-shaped slot 17. This forms a lip as it were of the part 18, which may be easily bent outward when the fastening is to be disconnected. In Fig. 3 the bottom of the lip 18 has been cut away to enable the finger to more readily engage therewith. This, however, is not necessary as the lip may be made as shown in Fig. 6, where it extends down to and in line with the bottom of the coverll. The tongue 16 projects downwardly as shown in Fig. 3 and has straight sides, and a straight lower edge at right angles to said sides. This straight edge may, however, be semi-circular in form, as in dotted lines Fig. 6. Instead of making the loop 12 of sheet metal it may be made integral with the box, as in Figs. 6 and 7. A fastening device for locking covers on boxes comprising a keeper on the sideof the box and cooperative securing means on the cover comprising an opening, and a tongue lying wholly in the plane of the wall of said cover, projecting into said opening from the upper edge of said opening, said opening receiving said keeper and having an edge engaging the underside of said keeper, said tongue passing into saidkeeper.

6. Ina fastening device for box covers,

a boxvprovided with an outwardly project- -ing fiat loo-p on two or more sides, combined witha cover having an integral lip on corresponding sides, with substantially parallel notches extending upwardly from the edge of said side at the sides of said lip, and int egral tongues formed by a bifurcated slot in each lip, each of said tonguesada'pted to enter a loop and each lip to extend around the loop, said loop and lip lying substan tially flush with the outer surface of the coven.
