To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISIDORE come and SIMON GOLDNER, citizens of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looking and Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of a new and improved method of locking or fastening a box.
The device may be used for fastening the bottom, ends, sides or top of a box together.
The device is extremely simple in construction and cheaply made and is more particularly adapted to be used on card board or paper boxes for packing small articles of clothing such as handkerchiefs, neckties, etc.
By means of the invention the box body can be shipped in a flat position and thereby space is saved in shipping a large number of empty boxes.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view of a box showing the ends with the side broken away and our improved fastener thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one part of the fastener showing the studs or pins by which the fastener can be secured to the part of the box to which it is to be applied. Fig. 3 is a view of the lock or catch into which the fastener fits. Fig. 4 is a section along the line :0 as of Fig. 1 showing the fastener and lock detached. Fig. 5 is a similar sectional view of a corner of the box or receptacle showing two parts fastened together by means of our device. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a body blank of a box with our device attached thereto. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the device when in use for fastening the top of a box onto the sides.
In the accompanying drawing a indicates the sides and ends of a box or receptacle. The device may be preferably formed of a thin piece of stiff sheet metal for instance, brass. This sheet metal is indicated at Z) and is folded over as shown in Fig. 2 and cut out and the cut out portion as shown in Fig. 2 is folded over making a flat spring projection or spring tongue 0. Another piece of metal of similar material is folded over for use as a lock which is indicated in Specification of Letters Patent.

The tongue 0 being made of thin stiff metal has of course a certain amount of spring and can be pressed inside the lock (Z. After it is inserted the tongue 0 springs out and catches against the collar f formed in the block d and the parts are thus rigidly fastened together.
The block (1 has a slit or opening 9 so that when it is desired to unfasten the box and fold it out fiat again, this result may be accomplished by pressing a small pointed instrument or a thumb nail into the opening 9 with suflicient force to press the tongue a sufficiently to allow it to pass the collar 7 when the tongue 0 may be withdrawn and the parts unfastened.
When it is desired to use the device for the cover of a box as shown in Fig. 7 the opening on the block (Z is made on the outside of the block (Z. The tongue 0 and holding block b may both be provided with pins or studs h shown in Figs. 2 and 8 which can pass through the side or top of the box or receptacle to which the block is attached and bent over as a fastening. These locking studs It may be, if desired, cut out of the same piece of metal from which the tongue and lock are formed or they may be separate studs if desired.
If desired the block b may be made out of a piece of metal large enough to cut out the tongue 0 as shown in Fig. 6 and leave a strip of metal 2' to strengthen the side of the block (Z or it may be cut through as shown in Fig. 2.
We do not wish to be confined to the precise form of construction shown in the drawing and specification, but we lay claim broadly to any and every modification of the invention shown in our application.
We claim:
A locking device for ends, sides and lids of boxes comprising a catch member, and a locking member, in combination, each of said members consisting of a piece of U shaped metal having clips for attaching the members to the meeting ends of a receptacle, said catch member having a tongue integral with and extending at right angles from the body of the member and having a looped part to form a spring catch, said locking member having a slot situated in the edge of said under side of the shoulder, said locking member having a thumb opening adjacent to the looped catch.
