INVENTOR April 5, 1938. c. N. M GEE RETAINER FOR BEER CASE COVERS Filed March 24, 1936 Patented Apr. 5, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE] 2,113,486 RETAINER FOR BEER CASE COVERS Clifford N. McGee, Dry Ridge, Ky. Application March 24, 1936, Serial No. 70,684
3 Claims. (01-292940) This invention relates to fasteners especially adapted for securing covers of shipping cases and like devices and has for the primary object the provision of axdevice of this character which will be economical to .manufacture and simple to install to a case and which will be self-securing during the application of the cover'to the case and will prevent accidental displacement of the cover from said case.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists incertain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be' hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, showing fasteners securing the cover to a shipping case and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the cover secured to the case by one of the fasteners and taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating one of the elements of the fastener.
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating another element of the fastener.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view, illustrating a modified form of my invention adapted to a case and securing a cover thereto.
Figure 7 is a front elevation, illustrating the modified form of my invention.
Figure 8 is a perspective view illustrating another modified form of my invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a conventional type of shipping case primarily used for containing bottled goods, such as beer and like beverages. The case is closed by a cover 2, preferably constructed of cardboard or similar material and includes side flaps 3 and end flaps 4. The cover fits within the case with the flaps 3 and 4 contacting the side and end walls. To prevent displacement of the cover accidentally fasteners 5 are provided between the cover and case and are of the type to adapt to penetrate the flaps 4 when the latter are in serted in the case during the application of the cover to said case so as to retain the cover against displacement.
Each fastener consists of a plate 6 of rhombiform having formed thereon tines I and a penetrating tongue 8. The tines I extend in opposite directions from the penetrating tongue 8 and also extend at substantially right angles tothe plate. The plate is apertured, as shown at 9, to receive ascrew or likefastener for securing the plate to the'ca'se on the interior thereof. The tines I also biteinto the case and aid the screw or like fastener in firmly anchoring the plate to the case. The penetrating tonguet extends outwardlyand downwardly from the walls of the case to which it is applied. The plate is so secured, to the case that the penetrating tongue is positioned in a plane above the lower edge of the flaps 4.
A resilient strip I0 is apertured adjacent one end, as shown at H, to receive a screw or like fastener for securing the strip to the case in a plane below the plate and in vertical alignment with the latter. The attached end of the strip is tapered and bent at right angles to form a tine l2 to bite into the case. The strip i0 is slightly curved from its attached end towards its free end having the latter-named end bent to form a pointed hook l3 extending in an opposite direction to the curvature of the strip. The curvature of the strip permits the strip to extend outwardly and upwardly from the wall of the case to which it is attached and to project beyond the penetrating tongue of the plate 6 with the pointed hook-shaped end l3 inclining downwardly and in the direction of the plate with its free end slightly spaced from the plate so that the flap l of the cover may pass between the plate and the hook-shaped end l3. The strip bears against the end of the penetrating tongue so that on further movement of the flap relative to the strip and plate a force from the strip on the flap will act to urge the flap laterally to bring about penetration thereof by the tongue 8, thus efficiently securing the flap to the wall of the case and consequently holding the cover against displacement from the case.
A cover secured to a case by fasteners of the character described will obviate any possibility of the cover becoming accidentally removed and when the case is employed for the shipment or storage of beer or like beverages, the cover being efficiently secured to the case will prevent light from coming in contact with the beverage and affecting the latter.
Referring to my modified form of invention shown in Figures 6 and 7, an attaching plate I4 is apertured to receive screws or like fasteners for securing the plate to the case I. Av tongue 15 is struck fromthe plate l4 and inclines outwardly and upwardly from the plate and has a portion thereof reduced and bent to form a penetrating bill l6 extending in the direction of the inner face of the case. The plate M has formed therein a slot I! by striking therefrom the tongue l5 and the plate at opposite sides of the slot is offset to form cam faces l8. The cam faces are arranged at opposite sides of the bill l6 and slope outwardly and downwardly from the case beyond the bill. The cam faces 18 act to guide the flap 4 of the cover 2 when the latter is applied to the case in the direction of the bill l6 of the tongue so that the flap will be penetrated thereby and be prevented from being drawn from the case if an attempt is made to remove the cover 2, thereby requiring the tearing of the flap 4 before the cover may be removed from the case.
Referring to my modified form of invention, as shown in Figure 8, an attaching plate or strip I9 is provided apertured to receive screws or like fasteners for securing said strip or plate to the case. Formed integrally with one edge of the plate l9 and extending at right angles thereto is a plate 20 cut or severed to form a tongue 2| having, a pointed bill .22. The cutting of'the plate 20 to form the tongue and :the bill 22 defines a slot 23, one wall of which is shaped to form a cam 25 disposed opposite the end of the bill 22 and inclining away from the strip or plate I9 past the pointed end of the bill and is for the purpose of guiding the flap 4 of the cover in engagement with the ,bill so as tobe penetrated thereby,:the slot 23 permitting the flap 4 to extend into the plate 20. The operation of this form of my invention is similar to that of the form shown in Figures 6 and 7 and the latternamed forms are in common with that form shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, by the fact that the tongues l5 and 2| are equivalent to the tongue 8 and the cams l8 and 25 are the equivalent to the member I 0.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A fastener comprising a plate, means for securing the plate to a case and adapted to have a cover passed thereover, a penetrating tongue formed on said plate to pass through the cover, and a cam formed on the plate to urge the cover against the tongue to be penetrated thereby.
2. A fastener comprising an attaching plate, a tongue formed on said plate and having a pointed bill portion extending in the direction of the plate and spaced therefrom, and a cam formed on the plate to be engaged by a cover for directing said cover against the bill of the trated by the bill.
3. A fastener comprising an attaching plate, a second, plate formed integrally with the attaching plate extending at right angles thereto and slotted to, form a tongue having a pointed bill ex tending in the direction of the attaching plate, one wall'of the slotted second plate being shaped to form a cam lying in close proximity to the bill of the tongue for guiding the cover in engagement with the bill to bepenetrated thereby.
