J. K. RICHIE HOLDER Filed July 9, 1927 Patented Aug. 21, 1928.
PATENT OFFICE."
JAMES KING RICHIE, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER.
Application filed July 9,
This invention relates to an article holder and more particularly to an article holder especially designed for attachment to the instrument board of a motor vehicle.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily stamped from a length of sheet metal by a single stamping operation and bent in such a way as to provide an article holder.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder constructed in accordance with the invention.
8 Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the holder.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of a holder designed for holding match boxes.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan View thereof.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device includes a body portion having a front wall 5, bottom 6 and upstandingflange 7, the upstanding flange 7 being provided with a threaded opening to accommodate the set screw 8 which passes through the flange and contacts with the rear surface of the instru ment board to clamp the article holder in po sition.
Extending rearwardly from the front wall 5 are vertical flanges 9 disposed adjacent to the ends of the front wall 5, the rear edges of the flanges 9 being designed. to contact with the front surface of the instrument board to define a container with the front wall of the instrument board so that a note book, map orother article maybe conveniently carried so that the operator of the car will have easy access thereto.
The upper edge of the front wall 5 is cut away as at 10 so that the thumb of the person removing the note book or article positioned in the article holder may readily grip 1927. Serial N0. 204,591.
the article to facilitate the removal of the article.
As clearly shown by the drawing, the upper edge of the front wall 5 curv es outwardly as at 11 so that a note book or article positioned in the holder will be guided to the holder.
In the form of the invention as shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, it will be seenthat the front wall which is indicated at 15, has rearwardly extended flanges 16 hinged adjacent to the edges of the front wall, the lower ends of the flanges 16 being bent inwardly as at 17 to underlie the base or bottom 18 of the article holder, the rear edge of the bottom 18 extending upwardly as at 19 where it is provided with an opening to receive the set screw 20 that cooperates with the rear edges of the flanges 1 6 in clamping the holder to the instrument board.
Thus it will be seen that the inwardly ex tended portions 17 brace the bottom 18 so that the same will not be bent downwardly when a box of matches or pressure is exerted onthe bottom 18.
The upper edges of the flanges 16 are inclined downwardly so that portions of the igniting surfaces of the match box positioned within the holder will extend above the upper edges of the flanges so that the matches contained in the box may be lighted.
In the bottom plate 18 is an upstanding finger 21 that contacts with the inner section of the match box to cause the inner section to be extended above the outer section of the match box so that a person may remove the matches with facility.
I claim:
1. An article holder of the class described including a body portion having a bottom, an upstanding member at the forward end of the bottom, said upstanding member having rearwardly extended flanges adapted to engage an instrument board of a motor vehicle, and means cooperating with the flanges for clamping the article holder to the instrument board.
2. An article holder of the class described including a body portion having a bottom, a front wall having rearwardly extended flanges adapted to contact with the instrument board of a motor vehicle, to define a pocket said bottomhaving an upstanding flange at the rear thereof, the last mentioned flange having an opening to receive a set screw, and said set screw adapted to cooperate With the flanges to hold the article holder to the instrument board.
3'. An article holder of the class described including a body portion having a bottom, a front Wall having rearwardly extended flanges and having inwardly extended lower end portions disposed under the bottom, iand 1 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my own, I have hereto Laflixed my signature.
JAMES KING RICHIE.
