UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
OWEN W. TAFT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-NAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,039, dated August 24, 1875; application filed June 28,1875.
' .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN W. TAFT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Picture-Nail, of
which the following is a specification:
My improvement in picture-nails consists of an ornamental head made of two cups of sheet metal, one being permanently attached, and the other detachable, and the cups being ornamented with spiral flutes or ribs, which also form screw-threads, by which the detachable part or cup is connected to the permanently-attached part. The cup which is permanently attached to the nail is preferably fastened by filling it around the shank by solder, but it may be fastened in any other approved way. The head, being silver or nickel plated, isliighly ornamental, and, besides that, it is much cheaper than other-ornamental picture-nail heads 110w in use.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a head contrived according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of a head, the attached part of which is empty, and the removable part is decached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the nail; B, the permanent part of the head; O, the removable ,part, and D the filling of solder. The parts B and G are cups of sheet metal, having spirally fluted or corrugated sides, such as are commonly formed by stamping or spinning, and, being of sheet metal, they afford the requisite size with but solder to it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved picture-nail head made of two stamped sheet-metal parts, B 0, having the sides ornamented with spiral corrugations forming screw-threads, by which the cup is connected to the permanent part, substantially as specified.
2. The permanent part of a picturenail head composed of a stamped and spirallythreaded sheet-metal cup, B, and a filling of solder, D, substantially as specified.
OWEN W. TAFT.
