IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,847, dated July 20, 1875; application filed June 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, J AMES H. McGLYMoNDs, of Winchester, in the county of Clark and State ot' Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination ot' the parts, as hereinafter more fully described, and then definitely pointed out in the claim.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a section, showing my invention applied in position. Fig. 2 fis an enlarged section ot' the door-check, and Fig. 3 is an end view of a part thereof.

A represents the wall adjacent to a door, B. On the wall A, at a suitable point, is secui ed a plate, @,from which projects arectangular hollow bar or box, D, which is open on top. In this box is pivoted a plate or bar, E, forming the top ot' the box, and to the inner end of said plat-e, on the under side, is secured a spring, a, the tendency of which is to throw the outer end of the saine downward into the box. At the outer end of the'plate E, on the under side, is formed a V-shaped.projection, b,

as shown in the drawing; On the door B, at a suitable point, is secured a plate, G, troni which projects a solid bar, J, having a notch, d, in its upper side corresponding with the shape and size ofthe projection I). The outer end ot' the bar J, beyond the notch d, is beveled or inclined, as shown at c. The normal position of the plate E is as shown in Fig. 2. When the door is opened back against the wall, the beveled end e of the bar J enters the end ot' the box D, and raises the outer end of the pla-te E, so that the projection b thereon will pass into the notch d ou the bar. the spring a holding it there with suficicnt tension tor all practical purposes. The door is easily closed again, the bar J sliding from under the end ofthe plate E.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The plate C, carrying the outwardly projccting box, or case D, having pivoted plate E, downward projection b, and spring` a, in combination with the plate G, carrying catch-bar J, having notch d, and beveled end e, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
