WEFT-PARTER DEVICE FOR LOOMS.

The invention is designed for application to weft-replenishing looms of the bobbinchanging type; more particularly, to those of the class in which replenishment is eiiected through replacing the shuttle-contained spent weft-carrier by a fresh or reserve filled one prior to complete exhaustion of the supply of weft or filling occupying the shuttle. v
Looms of the general type referred to have at the magazine side of a loom a shuttle-feeler which, in case the shuttle fails to occupy a position fully home in the shuttlebox at the saidside, operates to prevent the replenishing instrumentalities from performing the movements by which a reserve filled weft-carrier is transferred to the shuttle. Looms of the said type,.of the class mentioned, are provided with means for parting, at a point adjacent the inner end of. the shuttle occupying the said shuttle box, and into which a reserve filled weftcarrier is about to be placed, the length of old weft left trailing from the cloth-salvage to the said shuttlevand still remaining connected withv the spent weftor filling-carrier ejected from the shuttle in the replenishing operation. The said parting means includes a cutting and clamping device carried by the shuttle-feeler, and a device, usually mounted in connection with the loom breast-beam, acting as the shuttle-feeler moves rearward into shuttle-feeling position to open said device to receive the old weft length preliminary to parting the same.
The invention has relation in particular to the devic'e last mentioned, namely, the
opener-device which is mounted upon or in connection with the breast-beam, and by means of which the shuttle-feeler-mounted weft-parter device is opened for the purpose just stated, as the shuttle-feeler is moved rearwardin the loom into shuttle-feeling position.
The object of the invention is toobviatc injuries to weavers,loomfixers, and others, such as sometimeshave happened by reason of the hand of a person being carried bythe advancing lay of a loom against the rear end of theopener-device, in. consequence of being placed inadvertently in line with the said rear end. I accomplish this object through provisions for permitting the opener-device to yield when the occasion requires,
so as to avoid injury such as just mentioned.

Having reference to the drawings,
The breast-beam 1 of a loom, lay-beam 2,
shuttle-box front 21, shuttle-box back 3, and a portion of the overhanging top-flange 4 of the shuttle-box at the magazine-side of. the loom, are represented in vertical section in Figs. 1; and 2, which show inaddition a portion of the magazine stand 5 mounted by means of its foot 51 upon the breast-beam. A well-known form of shuttle-feeler is shown at 6, mounted pivotally at 61 upon magazinestand 5. The said shuttle-feeler is shown as connected, as in practice, by means of a-rod 7 with an arm 8 on the rod 9 which as usual extends transversely of the loom, and is controlled, in practice, through the agency of devices by means of which replenishment is called? when the predetermined stage of depletion of the shuttle-contents has been reached. .At 10 is indicated the movable member of a shuttle-feeler-carried weft-parter and clamp of well-known construction, such member as usual mounted pivotally by means oi a pivot 100 upon the shuttle-feel ing arm of the shuttle-feeler. The said movable member has the studslOl which is engaged as usual by the opener-device to swing such member into openposition, as the shut tie-feeling arm of the shuttle-feeler swings rearward from its normal position of rest shown in Fig. 1 to its shuttle-feeling position shown in Fig. 2. By such opening movement of the member 10, the combined weftparter and clamp is given the open position in which it is represented in Fig. 2, in readiness to receive between its members the length of weft which is to be parted thereby. The member 10 has the usual tall 102 (Fig. 2) against which the advancing lay acts to close the said member upon the said length 01 wel't to part the same and clamp one portion thereof intermediate the weftparter and the adjacent selvage of the cloth being woven. In Fig. 2 the lay is shown in contact with the said tail, just prior to the closing action.
The form of opener-device to which I apply my invention is a hooked member 11, hungby means of a pivot 110 upon a sup port 12 in connection with the breast-beam. This hooked member extends rearwardly from the said support toward the lay, into working relations with stud 101 carriedby the movable parter-member 10, its engaging portion being positioned at the required height for co-action with the stud 101 by means of an adjustment screw 11]. carried by the hooked member and making contact with a suitable abutment surface 112 on the stand. A spring 113 draws the hooked member downward so as to keep one end of the adjustmentscrew normally in contact with the said abutment surface,as in Figs. 1 and 2. As thus far referred to, the parts operate as follows z-In the normal, forwardly-retracted position of rest of the shuttle-feeler the rearwardly-extending hooked member 11 overhangs the stud 101 of the movable parter-member 10. As the shuttle-feeler swings rearward, preliminaryto replenishmentbeing effected, the stud is carried against the engaging portion of the hooked member, with the result that the said partermember is tilted on its pivot 100,'and the stud is carried rearward out from under the hooked member, as in Fig. 2. When the shuttle-feeler swings forward again, the hooked member yields upwardly to permit the stud to. pass.
In accordance with the invention, for the purpose of avoiding injury to a persons hand or arm in case it should be carried forward by the advancing movement of the lay against the rear end of hooked member 11, or be caught between the shuttle-feeler and the support 12, the support 12 is made capable of yielding so as to permit the hooked member to give way in a forward direction under such circumstances. In the drawings the support 12 is mounted by means of a pivot 121 upon a stand 122 which is held by a bolt 123 to foot 51 of magazine stand 5. The spring 113 having one end thereof engaged with hooked member 1l and the other with a rearwardly-extendlng portion of stand 122, both points of connection being rearward of supporting pivot for support 12, the tension of such spring not only acts to hold hooked member 11 with its adjustmentscrew 111 yieldingly maintained in contact with abutment surface 112, but normally maintains the support 12 rearward in a working position determined by the interengagement of stops 123 and 124 on support 12 and stand 122, respectively. A slot 125 in stand 122 provides for adjustment of the said stand and the hooked member 11 forwardly and rearwardly, so as to enable the engaging portion of the said hooked member to be located at the desired point in the path of stud 101 of the movable parter-member 10.
\Vhat is claimed as the invention is V 1. In a weft-replenishingloom, having a shuttle-feeler which moves rearwardly toward the lay for shuttle-detecting purposes and then resumes a normal forward position, a weft-parter moving rearward in unison with said shuttle-feeder, and a weft-parteropener hook which extends rearward from the breast-beam toward the lay and acts in the rearward movement of the shuttle-feeler and weft-parter to open the latter, the combination therewith ot' a movable support to which the said weftTparter-opener' hook is pivoted and which yields to avoid injury to an operators hand or the like accidentally interposed between the rear end of the said hook and the advancing lay.
2. In a weft-replenishing loom, having a shuttle-feeler which moves rearwardly toward the lay for shuttle-detecting purposes and then resumes a normal forward position, a weft-parter moving rearward in unison with said shuttle-feeler, and a weft-parteropener hook which extends rearward from the breast-beam toward the lay and acts in the rearward movement of the shuttle-feelerand weft-parter to open the latter, the combination therewith of a movable support to which the said weft-parter-opener hook is pivoted, the said support mounted pivotally so as to swing rearwardly and forwardly and having an abutment by which the engaging portion of the hook is positioned vertically, and a spring engaging with the said hook and operating to subserve the double function of yieldingly holding the hook to the abutment and of ing the support and hook normally in their rearward working positions.
