Such a mechanism forms the subject-matter of United States Patent No. 922,511 granted to me May 25, 1909.
y present invention is an improvement thereon in certain particulars to be pointed out hereinafter, whereby I prevent the filling-end, whether or not severed by the tem ple thread-cutter, from being carried back far enough to be whipped into the cloth. In the patented structure above referred to this fault sometimes occurs when the threadparting mechanism is moved into operative position in response to a call for filling replenishment.
The novel features of my present invention will be fully described in the subjoined specification and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is a transverse section on the line l1, Fig. 2, of a portion of a loom and the thread-parting mechanism, with m present invention embodied therein, the parts being shown in normal position; Fig.

The temple T, Fig. 2, and the thread-cutter t thereon are also usual and well known in the art. Herein, as in my patent, the setting or opening device for the clamping and parting instrumentality is mounted upon the upturned arm 21 fulcrumed at 22 andprovided with the spring-controlledcam-rib 25 on the rearwardly extended end 27 of the arm 21.
It will be understood that when filling-replenishment is called for the turning of the rock-shaft d causes the shuttle-feeler to be swung rearward and laterally into the posltion shown in Fig. 8, supposing the shuttle to be properly boxed for replenishment, and the advancing lay strikes the heel 20 to cause the appropriate devices to first clamp and then to part the filling-end, indicated at t, Fig. 2, the parting of the filling-end being at the side nearest the shuttle.
It will be remembered that the clamp and parter have been opened by the action of the cam-rib 25 on the pin 28 as the shuttlefeeler is moved to operative position.
Referring to Fig. 2 let it be supposed that the old filling-end which is clamped by the members 17 and 19 has not yet been parted by the temple thread-cutter if when the shuttle-feeler returns to its normal position, or it parted thereby lies in about the pos tion. 1ndicated at 2 Fig. 2. I will now describe the simple and effective means which I have herein provided for so guarding or catching the filling-end that under no circumstances can it be carried back into the cloth.
The rear end of the extension 27 of the arm 21 is, in accordance with my present invention, turned laterally and horizontally at 50,- toward the shuttle-feeler 9, and its extremity is provided with a guard 51 havingia notch 52 therein open toward the front of the loom, and as shown in Fig. 2, this guard is located back of the tip of the shuttle-feeler when the latter is in its normal position and between the path of movement thereof and the temple T.
The old filling-end 22 may rest upon the extension 27, as contemplated in my patent before referred to, or it may rest upon the lateral prolongation 50 of such extension, at I have shown it in Fig. 2.
When filling-replenishment is called for the shuttle-feeler 9 is moved rearward and to the right, Fig. 2, into its operative position shown in Fig. 3, and such movement carries the filling-end into the notched guard 51, see Fig. 3, so that if the thread is not released completely when the members of the clamp are opened the guard will act upon the thread or filling-end 23 and pull its end free from the clamp. The guard thus catches the old filling-end and holds it from being carried back as the shuttle-feeler moves to operative position, and thereby prevents the old filling-end from being carried near enough to the lay to be whipped or carried into the cloth. Even should such piece of thread r be still unsevered by the temple thread-cutter the guard 51 will still operate danger point, for unless the loose end is near the shuttle path. it can not be carried back into the cloth.
The cooperation of the guard 51 with the old filling-end is effected just about the in stant when the thread clamping and parting device on the shuttle-feeler is opened or set for operation", and by mounting the guard on the lateral prolongation 50 of the extension 27 the guard is brought as close as possible to the thread clamping and parting device, and the proper action of the guard is insured.
When the filling-end is clamped and parted the slight rise of the tip of the shuttlefeeler as it swings forward and to the left back to normal position serves to carry the clamped filling-end up and over the guard, the rear face thereof being rounded or convexed, as at 53, to facilitate the passage of the thread thereover.
Having fully described my invention,
Letters Patent is:
1. In an automatic filling-replenishing loom, a shuttle-feeler adapted to be swung rearwardly and laterally into operative position when replenishment is called for, a thread clamping and parting instrumentality mounted on the feeler, to clamp and part the old filling-end near the shuttle, an arm having means to set such instrumentality when the shuttle-feeler moves to operative position, and a device carried by said arm to engage and hold, at a point between the selvage and the thread clamping and parting instrumentality, the old filling-end previously clamped and parted and to prevent rearward movement of such filling-end when the shuttle-feeler is moved to operative position, whereby the filling-end can not be carried back into proximity to the.patl1 of the shuttle.
2. In an automatic filling-replenishing loom, a shuttle-feeler adapted to be swung rearwardly and laterally into operative position when'replenishmen't is called for, a thread clamping and parting instrumentality mounted on the feeler, to clamp and art the old filling-end near the inner end of the shuttle, an arm having means to set such in strumentality when the shuttle-feeler moves to operative position, a lateral prolongation on said arm turned toward the shuttlefeeler, and a guard on said prolongation having a frontwardly open notch to catch and hold, at a point between the selvage and said clamping and parting instrumentality, the old filling-end previously clamped and parted and insure the disengagement thereof from the clamping and parting instrumentality when the latter is set for operation upon movement of the shuttle-feeler to operative position.
3. In an automatic filling-replenishing loom, a temple-thread-cutter to part the old filling-end adjacent the cloth, a shuttlefeeler movable into position to cooperate with such filling-end when replenishment is called for, a thread clamping and parting instrumentality mounted on said feeler, to clamp and part the old filling-end near the shuttle, means I what I claim as new and desire to secure by to set for operation such instrumentality upon movement of the shuttle-feeler to operative position, and an up wardly and frontwardly notched guard interposed between the shuttle-feeler and adjacent the path of movement of the latter, previously clamped and parted filling-end to engage and hold a the temple thread-cutter and clamp and part the old fillin and prevent rearward movement thereof when the shuttle-feeler is again moved to operative position, the cooperation of the guard With theoldfilling-end at such time insuring its disengagement from the clamping and parting instrumentality.
4. In an automatic filling-replenishing loom, a templethread-cutter to part the old filling-end adjacent the cloth, a shuttlefeeler movable into position to cooperate with such filling-end When replenishment is called for, a thread clamping and parting instrumentality mounted on said feeler, to -end near the shuttle, means to set for operation such instrumentality uponmovement of the shuttlefeeler to operatlve position, an upright arm on which said means is mounted, a lateral prolongation on the arm, and a guard on the upper side of said prolongation adjacent the path of movement of the shuttle-feeler, to engage and hold from rearward movement a previously clamped and parted filling-end when the shuttle-feeler is again moved to operative position, such action of the guard also serving to effectually disengage the oldvfilling-end from the clamping and parting in-strumentality When the same is set for operation.
5. In a'loom, in combination, a feeler thread-cutter, and means cooperating with the old filling-end between the selvage and the feeler thread-cutter to prevent the said thread-cutter from carrying rearwardly the old filling-end due to a previous operation of the thread-cutter.
