FILLING-THREAD-CUTTING MECHANISM FOR WEFT-REPLENISHING LOOIVLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 22, 1911. Serial No. 534,730.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Err. H. RYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at WValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filling-Thread-Cut-ting Mechanism for Weft- Replenishing Looms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to filling thread cutting mechanism for weft replenishing looms, in which there is amagazine for superposed bobbins or filling carriers, and transferring mechanism to transfer a bobbin from the magazine into the active shuttle, to take the place of the substantially exhausted bobbin in the active shuttle. My filling thread cutting mechanism is adapted to cut the filling thread on the substantially exhausted bobbin. which is to be removed from the active shuttle, and a clamping device is adapted to hold the end of the filling thread, which passes from the cutter to the selvage or border of the woven fabric.
My filling thread cutting mechanism is adapted to be attached to and connected with the ordinary shuttle feeler for looms of the class referred to, and is brought into operation through the movement of the lay, as the lay moves to its front position, afterthe shuttle feeler is brought into operative position through the operation of the transferring mechanism. u
The object of my invention is to provide afilling thread cutting mechanism for weft replenishing looms of the class referred to of improved construction. I
My invention consists in certmn novel features of construction of my improvements in filling thread cutting mechanism as will be hereinafter fully described.
I have only shown in the drawings a detached portion of a loom of the class referred to, and a shuttle feeler, with my improvements in filling thread cutting mechanism applied thereto, suficient to enable those skilled in the art to understand the construction and operation thereof.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is an inner end view of a detached portion of magazine, and a shuttle feeler, with my in'iprovements in filling thread cutting mechanism attached thereto; the dotted lines show the shuttle feeler in itsdowered position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cutting mechanism shown in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow a, same figure. Fig. 3
shows the parts shown in Fig. 1, in a dif ferent position, and the lay beam'in section. Fig. t is a section, on line i, 4:, Fig. 3, looking in the direction of arrow 1), same figure, and. Fig. 5 is a section, on line 5, 5,, Fig. 4:, looking in the direction of arrow 0, same figure.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is a portion of a stationary magazine, Q-is a stand mounted thereon, which has a stud 3 Patented Oct. 22, T912.-
at its lower end, on which is loosely mounted the hub at of an arm 4, which has se cured thereto the shuttle ,feeler 5, see Figs. 1 and A second arm 4 on the hub 4;, has pivotally connected thereto the lower end of an upwardly extending connector 6, which, through the operation of the transferring mechanism, not shown, upon the substantial exhaustion of filling in the active shuttle, moves downwardly the shuttle feeler 5, shown by broken lines in Fig. 1.

All of the above mentioned parts, except the shuttle feeler 5may be of any usual and well known construction.
I will now describe my improvements in filling threadcutting mechanism. A stud ll'on the stand2 has secured thereon, by-a set screw 12, the hub 13 of a horizontally extending arm 13. The head 13 on said arm 13 has an elongated slot 13 to adjustably receive a. stud 14, which is secured in said slot by a nut 15. Thestud 14 has pivotally mounted thereon a hub 16 of a vertically extending arm 16. p screw 17 turns in ,a threaded hole n a lug 16 on the arm 16, and acts to hold the arm 16in position, against the yielding action of a contraction spring 18, which has one end connected to the arm 16. and its other end the lower knife blade 25,

The lower end of the arm l6 is provided with the extension 16, see Fig. 2, which has on its end the inwardly turned block 16", which, in the shape shown, forms at its outer end the lower jaw 16 of the clamping device. The upper jaw 17 of the clamping device, is in this instance pivotally mounted on a stud 18, yieldingly held against the lower j aw 16 by a helically coiled expansion spring 19, which encircles a pin 20 and presses against an upwardly extending projection 17' on the jaw 17 The pin 20 is in this instance loosely guided in a lug 16 on the arm 16. The jaw 17 is provided in this instance with a pin 21, which extends out therefrom. on one side thereof, and into an elongated opening on the upper knife blade 22, which is pivotally mounted on a stud 23. The stud 23 extends loosely through a hole in the block 16, and v has on its outer end a helically coiled expansion spring 241, which is adapted to'yieldingly press the upper knife blade 22 against which in this instance is secured to the block 16.
The shuttle feeler 5, which upon the substantial exhaustion of the filling on the bobbin, is operated by the transferring mechanism, to move downwardly, as shown by broken lines in Fig; 1, to feel for and indicate the proper :position of the active shuttle, has in this instance mechanisms combined therewith, which are adapted to carry the filling thread positively toward the cutting and clamping device above described. The feeler' 5 in this instance is provided with an arm or projection 5', carrying a stud 26 on its end which has pivoted thereon the hub 27 of a downwardly extending arm or lever 27 {the lower end of the lever 27 has a slot 27 therein into whichextends a stud 28, which has its end preferably threaded and screwed into a hook plate 29. The stud 28 slides loosely in an elongated slot 5" in the feeler end 5', which extends toward the front of the loom. A second bolt or stud 30 is connected in this instance to the hook plate 29, and also slides loosely in the slot 5 of the feeler 5. The downwardly extending end 5* of the slot 5", see Fig. 3, causes, on the movement of the hook plate 29, a quarter of a turn tobe imparted to said plate 29, and enables the hooked end'29' to catch'the filling thread, which passes from the shuttle to the woven fabric, to carry said thread forwardly, and toward the front of the loom, and toward the cutting mechanism. A helically coiled contraction spring 31, which has one end connected to the lever 27, and its other end to aneye 82 on the feeler 5, acts to yieldingly hold the lever 27 and hook plate 29; in the position shown in Fig. 1.
\Vhen the shuttle feeler 5, upon the substantial exhaustion of filling on the bobbin,
is moved downwardly, the hook plate 29 on the feeler 5, takes the position shown by broken lines in Fig. 1. The lever or arm 27 is provided in this instance with a stud 33, which extends out therefrom and is adapted to be engaged and operated by a rib 8 on the box mouth 8 on the lay, see
Fig. 3, as the lay moves toward-the front, and the hook plate 29 is operated and acts to engage the filling'thread and carry it toward the cutter. The stud 33, on the forward movement of the lay 7, engages the upwardly extending project-ion 17 on the upper jaw 17 of the clamping device, to raise said jaw 17 and also the upper knife blade 22, to enable the filling thread to pass into the openings between the knife blades. the further forward movement of the. lay, the stud 33 moves upwardly on the inclined edge'of the rib 8 and is disengaged from the projection 17 to leave the jaw 17 free to move downwardly, through the action of the spring 19, to hold the filling thread, and at the same time to have the thread severed by the cutting knives 22 and 25.
It will be understood that the details of construction of my improvements may be varied if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by lLettersPatent is 1. A shuttle feeler, having a portion to determine the proper boxing of a. shuttle, and said feeler having a guideoslot for a hook to catch a filling thread, and said hook, a lever pivoted on said feeler, and operatively connected to said book, a thread cutter, and a clamp arranged adjacent to said feeler, a lay, and means on said lay to move said lever and hook, and also open said cutter and clamp, for the purpose set forth. 2. In mechanism of the class described, a shuttle feeler. having a portion to detect the improper boxing of a shuttle, a guide slot in said feeler. a a lever pivoted on said feeler and connecte to said hook, a stationary clamp to receive a filling thread, said clamp located adjacent said focler, a lay,'and means on said lay to move said hook, to catch a-filling thread, and carry the same into said clamp, and to cause said clamp to be opened 3.
