Be it known that I, Alonzo E. Rnoaons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedalc, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-End-Retaining Means for W efoBerd'enishing Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specificat on, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. r

The downward increment of the latch may be limited by an abutment 34 thereon contacting with a stop 35 on the arm 27.
The, operation of the mechanism will now be apparent. The parts during the normal operation of the loom are in the position indicated in Fig. 2. hen the filling in the running shuttle'has become substantially exhausted and weft replenishmnet is to take place the starter rod 10 is rocked through the operation of any of the well known mechanisms provided for that purpose.
This operation raises the arm- 33 which strikes the tail "2S and raises and holds the latch 9.3 elevated thus releasing the clamping member 15 which at once swings rearwardly into clamping engagement with the chute 12, bringing the clamping member into The lay 5 now heats up to bring the shuttle into position beneath the transferrcr. As the lay heats up it strikes the hunter 31 swinging the clamping member forwardly, the operation of transfer takes place during which the fresh filling carrier is pushed into the shuttle and in turn pushes the substantially exhausted filling carrier down through the opening 7 and the abandoned filling carrier falls down the chute 12 and behind the clamping member now in its forward position leaving its end trailing from the shuttle eye down over the face of the chute. The lay now starts on its rearward movement and as it does so the clamping member swings rearwardly and comes into clamping engagementwith the chute thus pinching or clamp- 4 ing the end trailing from the abandoned filling carrier between the edge, in thiscasef, the leather strip 17 of the clamping member, and the chute, in this case the groove 18, of the chute. The shuttle now takes itsfiight and as it does so the trailing end of the abandoned filling carrier being held pinched 'the position shown in dotted lines in Fig 2.

Upon the next succeeding beat up of the lay the arm 33 has dropped to its lower position and the lay striking the hunter 31 will swing the clamping member 15 forwardly until it is caught by the latch. --Hence the clamping member will again resume and remain in its locked position until replenish-' ment is again to take place.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a weft replenishing loom, a lay pr'ovidcd with a shuttle box and having an openiag therethrough to permit the discharge of the abandoned filling carrier, a chute mounted on the loom frame and acting to guide the filling carrier in its discharge, a movable clamping member cooperating with the chute, and means acting to cause the said clamping member to clamp the filling end, extending from the filling carrier discharged down said chute, against the chute and to hold said end until withdrawn from the shuttle by its flight.

5. In a weft replenishing loom, a lay provided with a shuttle box and having an opening therethrough to permit the discharge of the abandoned filling carrier, a
discharge of the filling carrier, whereby upon the backward movement of the lay the clamping member moves into engagement with the chute clamping the filling end extending from the discharged filling carrier and causing said end to be withdrawn from the shuttle in its flight.
6. In a weft replenishing loom, a lay provided with a shuttle bO'X and having an opening therethrough to permit the discharge. of the abandoned filling carrier, a chute mounted on the loom frame and acting to guide the filling carrier in'its discharge, a clamping member, means acting normally to move said clamping member into clamping engagement with said chute, a pivotally mounted latch acting to swing into engagement with and hold said clamping member withdrawn fromsaid chute, means operated. by or through the weft replenishing mechanism to release said latch -prior to weft replenis lnnent taking place,
and maintain said latch released during weft replenishment, and a hunter projecting from said clamping member into the path of the lay whereby upon the beat up of the lay prior to replenishment the clamping member is moved and held away from the 'chu'te during the discharge of the abandoned filling carrier and whereby upon the suct-eedmg backward movement of the'lay the clamping member moves into engagement with the chute clamping the fillingend extending from the discharged filling carrier and causing said end to be withdrawn from the shuttle in its flight.
