This invention relates to filling replenishing looms wherein the fresh supply of filling is transferred to the shuttle when that previously in use has become substantially exhausted. I
l/Vhen filling replenishment is efiected, the
spent filling'end extending from the cloth selvage to the shuttle eye and thence into the shuttle must be removed, as otherwise ,it is liable to be carried into the shed and formimperfect cloth.
Various attempts have been made to carry into effect the desired objects and among these it has been proposed heretofore to cut the spent filling adjacent the shuttle eye on call for replenishment and in some cases, also, to clamp the end leading to the cloth selvage and carry it frontwardly out of the shuttle box.
Examples of filling end controllers for effecting this purpose in a satisfactory manner are found in the Alfred E. Stafford Patents, No. 1,552,388, September 1, 1925; No. 1,565,- 218, December 8, 1925, and No. 1,565,219, December 8, 1925, and while these mechanisms have acted satisfac'torily,it has been found in practice that where the spent filling is parted between the ends of the shuttle or adjacent the shuttle eye on call for replenishment, that owing to the rebound of the shut- "tle when it enters the box, the slack filling which extends from the shuttle eye to the cloth selvage falls below the zone of operation of the parting device. This is particularly observable in weaving with certain kinds of filling, and one of the purposes of the present invention is to provide means for insuring the action of the parting device between the ends of the shuttle or adjacent the shuttle eye, even through the shuttle has rebounded in the box. I
The invention and'novel features thereof will best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings of one good form thereof.

The present invention may be properly and advantageously employed in connection with any usual form of thread parter or thread parter and clamp which may. act upon the thread between the ends of'the shuttle and preferably near the side delivery eye thereof, but in the present illustrationof the invention it is shown in connection with a loom provided with the parting and clamping mechanism shown and described in the Stafiord Patent No.1,552,388,September 1,1925.
As more clearly pointed outin the Stafford patent to which reference maybe had, the lay 1 is provided with a shuttle box 2 at the replenishing side and the front wall ,3 of the shuttle box has an opening 4 from which extends towards the cloth selvage the thread passage 5 through which the thread may be drawn by the clamp following theaction of the thread parter, and preferablyas the lay goes back, the effect being that when thethread is withdrawn from the shuttle box the end leading from the cloth selvage will be carried frontward about the cloth selvage as a center, thereby positioning the thread for the action of the templethread cutter. I
The shuttle 6 maybe of any usual construction of the now'well-known filling replenishing type wherein the filling carrier or bobbin 7 is held in the shuttle by the usual bob bin holding jaws so that on replenishment of filling the filling carrier or bobbin upon which indication of substantial exhaustion of filling has been made may be ejected from the shuttle by the incoming filling carrier, all as now well-understoodin the art.
Mounted on the loom frame or the hopper stand, as described in the Stafford patent, is the stud or dead shaft 8'on which is mounted the usual tr'ansferrer '9, and supported from the stud or dead shaft 8 are the hangers 10 with which is connected the foot piece 11 whereby the parting mechanism may be supported in position to enter the shuttle to part. and clamp the thread on call IfOrrep'leniShment of filling.) Mounted uponthe hangers 10 or any suitable support is the guideway 12 in which isfsupported the slide 13 on f which the parting mechanism may be conveniently mounted. In" the'present instance of the invention the parting mechanism is shown as of substantially the same character as that inthe Stafford patent last above mentioned, and consists of pairs of jaws 14 pivotally mounted at 15 on a braclret 16 extending from the slide 13. Depending from the stud or dead shaft 8 is the arm 17 which is connected at its lower end by'a pin and slot connection 18 with the slide 13, and the arm 17 is actuated on call for replenishment of filling to move the thread parter and clamp rearwardly to pass into the opening 4 in the front wall of the shuttle box and part, or part and clamp, the thread. It will not be necessary here to further describe the details of the construction of the parting. or parting and clamping mechanism, since these may all be of any usual type now employed in parting, or parting and clamping, the thread ad acent vthe.
shuttle eye, and, as herein shown, is substan- "tially'the same as that fully and clearly de-e scribed in the Stafford Patent, No. 1,552.388 During ord nary weaving operations and in most cases upon call for replenishment of .7 filling, the shuttlewill occupy its home position in the shuttle box, so that the spent filling end a will be positioned opposite the opening 4 in the frontwall of the shuttle box for the action of thethread parter or thread parter and clamp asthe case may be. Ithappens' at times, however, that the shuttle will rebound in the box after striking the picker 19, and such condition is shown in Fig. 2 whereinthe shuttle is indicated as having rebounded after having struck the picker. On occurrence of rebound of the-shuttle the filling thread a will be ordinarily slackened between the shuttle eye and the cloth selvage and is liable to drop out of the zone of action of the thread parter, or thread parter and clamp, and one of the main features of this invention is to overcome this difiiculty so that the filling thread a shall be held in proper position for the action of the thread parter orv thread 45 P arter and clamp, notwithstanding the fact that the shuttle has rebounded in the box.
In accordance with the present invention, therefore, means are provided, such, for instance, as a thread positioner, for controlling the thread and holding it taut in the zone of action of the thread parter or thread parter and clamp, even though'the shuttle shall have rebounded in the box, and as one means for carrying this feature of the invention into effect the shuttle box has projecting inwardly thereof from the front wall a thread positioner which is located between the opening 4 in the front wall of the shuttle box and the side delivery eye 7) of the shuttle when the latter is fully boxed, so that the positioner engages the thread, and should the shuttle rebound the positioner still maintains control of the end leading to the cloth selvage to hold it in the zone of actionof the'thread parter or thread parter and clamp. The thread shuttle rebound,. the friction material will maintain the end a leading to the cloth selvage in position for the thread parter or thread parter and clamp.
As more clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the friction material 20 may be composed of a pad or tuft of fibrous material which may be mounted in an opening 21 in the front wall of the shuttle box and extend therethrough, so that the inner portion 22 of such material will engage the filling end a as the shuttle goes home in the shuttle box.
The friction material 20 may be appropriately formed of a bunch of fibres or, indeed, any suitable textile or other material which will present a. holding surface for the filling end a projecting inwardly from the front wall of the shuttle box and so located that when the shuttle is fully boxed it will act upon the filling between the side delivery eye of the fully boxed shuttle and the opening 4 in the front wall of the shuttle box through which the thread parter or thread parter and clamp acts.
As hereinbefore noted, the shuttle will pass into the replenishing shuttle box usually to the end of its flight, as indicated in Fig. 1,
so that the filling end a leading to the cloth selvage will be taut and held in the zone of the thread parter or thread parter and clamp under ordinary weaving conditions. Should the shuttle rebound, however, and slack filling therefore liable to exist between the side delivery eye 6 of the shuttle and the cloth selvage, the pad or tuft of friction material by itsengagem'ent with the filling will hold the same, as indicated at 23, Fig. 2, and therefore positionthe spent filling end accurately for the proper operation of the thread parter or thread parter and clamp. 7
As stated more fully in the Stafford Patent, No. 1,552,388, the thread parter or thread parter and clamp is moved rearwardly to enter the opening 4 in the front wall of the shuttle box on call for'replenishment of filling, following which the thread parter 0r thread parter and clamp is moved frontwardly after having severed the filling, so that the V clamp may withdraw the filling upwardly out of the shuttle box and prevent weaving of imperfect cloth. In the present invention this same condition may maintain, with the addition, however, of thethread positioner between the opening 4 in the front wall of the shuttle box and the shuttle eye 7), so that should the shuttle rebound, the filling a will. nevertheless, be maintained in proper position for the action of the thread parter or thread parter and clamp, thereby insuring the proper action of the parter or parter and clamp even though the shuttle rebounds in the box after having gone home.
As hereinbefore stated, the details of the thread parter or thread parter and clamp and the train of mechanism for placing it in active operation on replenishment of filling, may be of any usual construction, and since the character of such mechanism as herein shown is the same or may be the same as that in the Stafford Patent, No. 1,552,388, to which reference may be had for a more detailed description, it is not deemed necessary to further elucidate the details thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a shuttle box at the replenishing side of the 100111 having an opening in its front wall, a filling thread parter adapted to enter said opening to part the spent filling between the ends of the shuttle, and a thread positioner extending into the shuttle box at a point nearer the outer end of the shuttle box than the thread parter opening to hold the thread in position to be cut by the parter should the shuttle rebound in the box.
2. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a shuttle box at the replenishing side of the loom having an opening in its front wall, a filling thread parter adapted to enter said opening to part the spent fillin between the ends of the shuttle, and a threat positioner secured to the shuttle box and extending into the box at a point between the parter opening in the front wall of the shuttle box and the shuttle eye of a fully boxed shuttle to engage and position the filling across the parter opening should the shuttle rebound in the box.
3. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay having a shuttle box provided with an opening in its front wall adjacent the shuttle eye of the boxed shuttle,
a filling thread parter adapted to enter said opening in the wall of the shuttle box to part the thread adjacent the shuttle eye, and a thread positioner secured to the shuttle box and on the inner surface of the front wall of the shuttle box between said opening and the eye of a fully boxed shuttle to engage and hold the thread in position for the action of the parter should the shuttle rebound in the shuttle box.
4. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay having a shuttle box at the replenishing side of the loom provided with an opening in its front wall between the ends of the boxed shuttle, a spent filling thread parter to enter said opening and part the thread, and a thread positioner extending into the shuttle box between the said opening and the shuttle eye of the boxed shuttle to engage the filling thread and hold it stretched across said opening in position for the action of the parter should the shuttle rebound in the box.
5. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay having a shuttle box provided with an opening in its front wall adjacent the shuttle eye of the boxed shuttle, a filling thread parter adapted to enter said opening to part the thread adjacent the shuttle eye, and a thread positioner constituted as a bunch of friction material on the inner surface of the front wall of the shuttle box between said opening and the eye of the boxed shuttle to engage and hold the thread in a taut condition for the action of the parter should the shuttle rebound in the shuttle box. 6. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay having a shuttle box provided with an opening in its front wall adjacent the side delivery eye of the boxed shuttle, a thread parter and clamp adapted to enter said opening to part the thread adjacent the shuttle eye and clamp the thread end leading to the cloth selvage to remove it from the shuttle box, and a thread positioner secured to and extending into the shuttle box between said opening and the eye of a fully boxed shuttle to engage and hold the thread stretched across said opening in position for the action of the parter and clamp should the shuttlerebound in the shuttle box.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay having a shuttle box pro- 100 vided with an opening in its front wall adjacent the side delivery eye of the boxed shuttle, a thread parter and clamp adapted to enter said opening to part the thread adjacent the shuttle eye and clamp the thread 105 end leading to the cloth selvage to remove it from the shuttle box, and a thread positioner constituted as a tuft of friction material extending into the shuttle box between said opening and the eye of the boxed shuttle 110 to engage and hold the thread taut and in position for the action of the parter and clamp should the shuttle rebound in the shuttle box.
