Patented June 3, 1930 PATENT OFFICE FRANK HARRIS, O'F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO DR'APER CORPORATION, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE THREAD-PARTING MECHANISM FOR FILLING REPLENISHING LOOMS Application filed April 9,
This invention relates to filling replenishing looms wherein a fresh supply of filling is furnished from time to time while the loom continues to run, and is more particularly directed to the cutting mechanism used in such looms for cutting the outgoing filling end.
In looms of this general type when replenishment of filling is effected, the outgoing or spent filling end extends from the cloth selvage through the eye of the shuttle then in the replenishing shuttle box and unless efi'ectively removed is liable to be drawn into the shed by the shuttle or become entangled with the new filling and produce imperfect cloth. Much attention has been directed to this problem and means have been provided for cutting or cutting and clamping the outgoing filling adjacent the shuttle to eye, so that as the old filling carrier is thrown from the shuttle on replenishment, the spent filling end leading through the eye of the shuttle is sufficiently short to permit the outgoing filling carrier or bobbin to pull-it from E3 the eye as. the filling carrier or bobbin is ejected. The end portion of the'filling leading to the cloth selvage has also been removed from the danger zone by carrying the end of the spent filling leading to the cloth sel- :3 vage frontwardlyof the shuttle box, and a good practical form of means to this end is shown and described in the patent to Alfred E. Stafford, No. 1,552,388, September 1, 1925. In the Stafford patent the parter is mounted for movement to thread parting position on call for replenishment of filling and the parter is closed to out and clamp the filling by.
downward movement ofthe transferrer.
In some cases it is desirable to provide the transferrer with a bobbin tip engaging portion and to provide a bobbin tip guide for directing the tip of the bobbin into proper position 'inthe shuttle. vVhen, however, the closing of the thread parter is effected through the transferrer there is usually not room at this congested part of the mechanism for the employment of the bobbin tip engagmg part on the transferrer nor the bobbin tip guide.
An important feature of the present in- 1929. 7 Serial No. 353,713.
vention therefore consists of an outgoing thread parter which is opened before the parter reaches its rearward thread parting position, and a parter closing device mounted to close the parter and part the thread by movement of the parter frontwardly relative to the parter closing device.
More specifically stated, the present invention contemplates that the parter closing device or trip shall be mounted in fixed position rearwardly of the parter opening device, so that after the thread has been positioned in the parter and the parter is moved frontwardly past the parter closing device, the latter will act to close the parter and part the thread by relative movement of the parter with respect to the closing device.
The novel features of the invention and new combination of parts will best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings of one good form thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the replenishin side of a loom, with parts broken away, and containing the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation with parts in section, showing the parter opened and about to be moved frontwardly and r Fig. 3 is a similar view with some of the parts omitted, showing the position of parts as the parter closing device operates the parter to part the thread. 7
The loom frame 1 may be of usual: construction and has mounted thereon the hopper stand 2 which may be appropriately secured to the loom frame by the bolts 3. Hising from the stand 2 is the support or plate 4: comprising part of the hopper or magazine, and mounted for rotative movement with the hopper are a series of filling carriers or bobbins 5 which are successively brought into transferring position by any usual form of hopper actuating mechanism, as usual.
Mounted in the stand 2 and extending laterally therefrom is the stud or dead shaft 6 on which is mounted for rocking movement the hub portion 7 of a transferrer 8 which is i normally under the influence of a spring 100 CTI 9 acting to maintain the transferrer in its upward or idle position.
The stud or dead shaft 6 has an extended end portion 10 on the outer end of which is mounted a bracket 11, of any usual character, and provided with guideways 12 for a partercarrier or slide 13.
Mounted for rocking movement of the extended end portion 10 of the stud or dead shaft is the swinging member 14 which is shown in the present instance as comprising the arms 15 mounted for rocking movement on the end 10 of the stud or dead shaft, and extending downwardly is the arm 16 the lower end portion of which is provided with a slot 17 which is engaged by a pin 18 extending from the parter carrier or slide 13, the construction being such that upon rocking movement of the swinging arm 14 the carrier or slide 13 will be given reciprocating movements towards and from the rear of the loom.
The swinging frame 14 has a part 19 which is connected to a pin 20 by a flexible connection 21, and the pin 20 is mounted on the goose-neck 22 connected to the shuttle feeler mechanism or its shaft, as usual in this character of loom.
Extending downwardly from the hub 7 of the transferrer is the arm 23 to which is pivotally connected at 24 the transferrer operating dog 25 which is adapted to be engaged by a hunter 26 on the lay when the indicating mechanism has called for replenishment of filling. The parts so far described may be of the general character more fully shown and described in the Stafi'ord patent hereinbefore mentioned.
The thread parting mechanism of the present invention is intended to part the outgoing filling between the ends of the shuttle and preferably at a point adjacent the shuttle eye when the latter is in filling replenishing position.
The lay 27 has the usual filling replenishing shuttle box 28 which is provided with an opening 29 for the passage of the substantially exhausted filling carrier or bobbin 30.
As indicated in the present instance of the invention, the front wall 31 of the shuttle box has an opening 32 which is adjacent the shuttle eye when the shuttle is properly boxed in the replenishing shuttle box.
It is usual in this general character of loom construction to provide the shuttle 33 with an openingor cut-away portion 34 in the frdnt wall thereof,'as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that when the thread parter is in its rearward position and the members of the parter are opened, the outgoing filling end will rest between the members of the parter ready for the cutting operation.
Secured to the carrier or slide 13 is the thread parter which, in the present instance of the invention, consists of two members, one at least of which shall be movable relative to the other. In the construction shown the parter consists of the relatively fixed member 35 and the relatively movable member 36, which are mounted at 37 on a bracket 38 extending from the rear end portion of the parter carrier or slide 13. The parter may be of the same general character as more fully described in the Stafford patent, and where the filling end is not only to be parted but is to be withdrawn frontwardly from the shuttle box, the parter is also provided with a clamping member to clamp and hold the thread leading to the cloth selvage. In these respects, also, the parter and clamp may be substantially like that shown and described in the Stafford patent.
Mounted upon the bracket 11 is the support 39v for a parter opening trip. The support 39, as shown, consists of a plate extending laterally inward from the bracket 11 and has pivotally mounted thereon at 40 the partor opening trip 41 adapted to engage a pin 42 on the movable member of the parter to open the parter before it reaches its rearward or thread parting position.
In the present instance, the parter opening trip 41 may turn freely in a frontward direction but has only a limited turning movement in a rearward direction by reason of a stop 43, the construction being such that as the parter moves into its rearward or thread parting position, the pin 42 on the movable member of the parter will ride upwardly on the inclined surface 44 of the trip and cause the parter members to be separated or the parter to be opened before it reaches its rearward or thread parting position.
Mounted upon a bracket 45 which may be appropriately formed as a laterally extending arm secured to the bracket 11 is the parter closing trip 46. In the present instance, the parter closing trip 46 is pivotally mounted at 47' on the downturned end portion 48 of the arm 45 and has a toe portion 49 adapted to engage the pin 42 when the parter is moved frontwardly relative to the parter closing trip, to thereby close the parter by movement ofthe pivoted member thereof in a parter closing direction, as indicated in Fig. 3.
To limit the swinging movement of the parter closing trip 46, the latter has a shoulder 50 to rest against the lateral portion of the arm or bracket 45 when the toe of the closing trip is engaged with the pin 42 of the parter.
From the construction thus far described it will be apparent that upon call for replenishment of filling the parter carrier or slide 13 will be moved rearwardly to position the parter members in the opening 32 of the front box plate, and during its rearward movement, in the present instance, the opening trip 41 will open the parter by action thereon into full upon the pin 42 extending from the movable member of the parter. This condition of parts is well illustrated in Fig. 2, wherein it will be noted that the parter members are separated when the parter is in its rearward position, to receive the outgoing filling end or thread a.
IVith the parts in the position stated and the lay moving frontwardly towards transferring posit-ion, the parter carrier or slide 13 will be moved frontwardly by a hunter 51 secured to and extending rearwardly from the carrier or slide 13, with the result that the parter closing operation will be effected before the action of the transferring mechanism to thereby part the thread and free the outgoing bobbin or carrier from connection with the cloth selvage.
After the parter has parted the thread, the transferrer will be operated to effect transfer of a fresh filling carrier in the shuttle, and as the transferrer rises to its normally inactive position, the swinging arm 1-1 will be moved to carry the slide 13 and the parter front position.
Should a thread clamp be employed, as is shown by Fig. 1, obviously the end of the thread leading to the cloth selvage will likewise be carried frontwardly to position this end of the thread for the action of the temple thread cutter. In passing frontwardly from the shuttle box the filling end leading to the cloth selvage travels by the inclined way 52 in the front box plate and finally is withdrawn from the shuttle box over the top of the front plate, as more fully explained in the Stafford patent hereinbefore mentioned.
As will be obvious from Figs. 2 and 3, more particularly, the parter closing trip is mounted rearwardly and backwardly of the part-er opening trip, and preferably above the line of travel of the parter, the construction being such that upon call for replenishment of filling the parter carrier will be moved rearwardly and the parter will be opened by the parter opening trip before the parter reaches its rearward or thread parting position. As the lay advances, the parter carrier and parter will be moved frontwardly b engagement of the hunter 51 with the lay or shuttle box, until finally the pin 42 on the movable member of the parter or parter and clamp will meet the parter closing trip and part the filling or thread, and this action will take place before the transferrer accomplishes replenishment of filling.
