Patented Jan. 12, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FILLING END PARTING MECHANISM FOR LOOMS 8 Claims.
This invention relates to automatic replenishing looms, and more particularly to an improved filling end parting mechanism for such looms.
In replenishing looms that operate automatically to eject a spent filling bobbin from one of the shuttle boxes and transfer a new full bobbin to the shuttle box in its place, the ejected or outgoing bobbin leaves a filling end extending from the cloth selvage that must be parted or out to free the outgoing filling bobbin for ejection. In order to avoid leaving the remaining length of the outgoing filling end hanging loose- 1y at the cloth selvage, it is conventional to provide a parting mechanism arrangedto move adjacent the shuttle box upon transfer for parting and clamping the outgoing filling end and then withdrawing the clamped filling end away from the shuttle box so that it is held extending from the cloth selvage until cut by the temple knife.
By such an arrangement it is intended to remove the outgoing filling end substantially from the path of picking movement of the shuttle so as to prevent the filling end from being drawn into the shed to cause a cloth defect by the shuttle or as a result of the air currents induced by the shuttle and the lay movements. As a matter of fact, however, the conventional parting mechanisms heretofore commonly in use have been arranged to operate simply at the level of the shuttle box, so that when the parted outgoing filling end was clamped and withdrawn it still remained extending from the cloth selvage with a disposition substantially parallel to the shuttle flight and consequently in the path oflay as it beat up on each pick, with a resulting possibility at each pick that the lay, or the hunter thereon, or other adjacent moving loom parts, might break the filling end or pull it loose from the clamping blades.
According to the present invention an improved parting mechanism is now provided by which the clamped filling end is held extending from the cloth selvage so that it is raised above the path of the lay and other adjacent loom elements. Briefly characterized, this improved parting mechanism of the present invention comprises a pivoted mounting arrangement for the: parting blade assembly on the carrier slide provided therefor, and related positioning means for supporting the pivoted parting blade assembly with, the more or less level disposition that is usual as it, moves to and from. the. replenishing shuttle box for the parting and clamping operation, but. by which the partin blade assembly is pivoted as it returns to its normal retracted position so that the operative end thereof is elevated to raise the filling end clamped thereby above the path of the lay and other associated loom elements. As a result, the outgoing filling end is disposed to much better advantage against breaking or pulling loose from the parting blades, and much more consistent and dependable operation of the parting mechanism is obtained.
These and other features of the improved parting mechanism of the present invention are described in detail below in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view showing a filling end parting mechanism embodying the present invention, with the surrounding loom structure indicated fragmentarily;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parting mechanism as would be seen from the right in Fig. 1, with the projected position of the parting blade assembly shown in full lines and the retracted position shown in dotted lines, and with related loom. structure indicated in broken lines;
Fig. 3 is a plan view corresponding generally to Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the parting mechanism as seen from the left in Figs. 2 and 3;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail, partly in section, illustrating further the pivoted disposition of the parting blade assembly in retracted position; and
Fig. 6 is a similar detail showing the parting blade assembly in projected position.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, and more particularly at first to Fig. 1, the improved filling end parting mechanism of the present invention is shown in Fig. 1, as indicated generally by the reference numeral I0, arranged in an automatic replenishing loom of the type equipped conventionally with a transfer mechanism incorporating a reserve hopper or magazine 12 from which a stud shaft I 4 projects to carry a. transfer hammer l6 that is actuated by suitable connections from the lay bunter (not shown) to initiate the transfer operation when replenishment is required. The stud. shaft [4 also carries a connecting linkage 18 by which reciprocating movement of the parting mechanism [0 is actuated from the transfer mechanism. at the time of transfer to part and clamp the outgoing filling end from a shuttle such as 20, atthe eye 22 of the replenishing shuttle box 24 disposed on the lay 26. all as is conventional in the art.
The stud shaft l4 additionally serves, as is usual, to support the parting mechanism It), and for this purpose is fitted with a support bracket 28 which is preferably arranged so that the above noted reciprocating movement of the parting mechanism In follows an inclined path as disclosed, for example, in Burdett Patent 1,883,532.. This support bracket 28 carries in turn a mounting bracket or brackets 30 on which the parting mechanism In is secured.
The parting mechanism ID proper (see Figs. 2, 3 and 4) comprises a horizontal guideway 32 that is secured directly on the above mentioned mounting brackets 36, and that slidably supports a carrier 34 for reciprocation along the inclined path noted above, the carrier 34 beingfitted with a pin 36 on which the previously mentioned connecting linkage l8 operates to actuate reciprocating movement of the carrier 34 from the transfer mechanism.
The carrier 34 is also fitted with a pivot stud 38 for a mounting block 40 on which fixed and movable parting and clamping blades 42 and 44 are assembled, the movable blades 44 being fitted with an opening and closing pin 45 in the usual manner. The mounting block 4!! also carries an adjustable stop member 48 to determine the proper projected position of the parting and clamping blades 42 and 44 at the shuttle box 24, and is specially fitted with a cam follower pin 59 through which the mounting block 40, and the parting and clamping blades 42 and 44 assembled thereon, are pivoted to an elevated position for raising a clamped filling end above the moving loom parts as previously mentioned.
The pivoting movement of the mounting block 40 and blades 42 and 44 is actuated from an elevating cam 52 disposed below the mounting block 40 on a bracket 54 extending from a mounting point on the slide 32. terminates rearwardly in a rounded toe portion as at 52' so that the mounting block follower pin will ride on and off of it as the carrier 34 is reciprocated at the time of transfer. In the normal retracted position for the parting and clamping blades 42 and 44 (see Fig. 5), the follower pin 50 rides on top of the elevating cam 52 and maintains the mounting block so and blades 42 and 44 pivoted to a raised position, as shown. At transfer, however, as the carrier 34 moves rearwardly toward the shuttle box 24, the follower pin 5 rides off the toe 52' of cam 52 allowing the mounting block 49 and blades 42 and 44 thereon to assume by the action of gravity a more or less level disposition such as is usual, the carrier 34 being fitted with a stop pin 55 for supporting the mounting block 4!! and glades 42 and 44 with the proper level disposi The opening and closing movement of the clamping blades 42 and 44 is actuated in the usual manner by trip cams 58 and 6D, the opening trip cam 58 being mounted beside the elevating cam 52 on the bracket 54 and the closing trip cam 6!! on an auxiliary bracket arm 62 extending therefrom. By usual manner of actuation for the clamping blades 42 and 44 it is meant that the opening cam 53 engages the pin 46 to open the movable blades 44 upon rearward movement of the carrier 34 to projected position, while the closing cam 50 engages the pin 46 to close the movable blades 44 upon return movement to retracted position.
- The present invention has been described above in detail for purposes of illustration only and This elevating cam 52 4 is not intended to be limited to this description or otherwise except as defined in the appended claims.
