H. A. DAVIS FILLING REPLENISHING LOOM Filed Nov. 15. 1923 Patented Oct. 7, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY A. DAVIS, 01? HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO DRAPER CORPORA- TION, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
FILLING-REPLENISHING LOOIVL Application filed November 15, 1923. Serial No. 674,880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to looms, and more particularly to means for withdrawing the trailing end of the old filling from the shuttle when replenishing has been effected.
In loomsof the filling replenishing type, sometimes called automatic looms, the filling is replenished from time to time by substituting for the old filling carrier or bobbin in the shuttle, another containing a supply of filling wound thereon. In such looms a slot is usually provided along which the p-icker'stiok travels and this slot lies below the aperture in the lay through which the old filling carrier is discharged, and as a result the ejected filling carrier or bobbin tends to fall into the picker stick slot. To prevent this, the lay is commonly provided with a chute plate that serves to direct the discharged filling carrier or bobbin laterally as it'moves downwardly so that it will clear the picker stick slot. This chute plate is disposed at one end of the picker stick slot where it will engage the large end of the filling carrier or bobbin as it is ejected, but the chute plate will not prevent the small end of the filling carrier or bobbin from tilting downward when it is improperly ejected from the shuttle, and it'sometimes happens that the small end or the filling carrier or bobbin enters th picker stick slot and is damaged therein.
When filling is replenished in an automatic loom, it is the usual practice to part the old filling between the cloth selvage and shuttle, so that when the old filling carrier or bobbin is ejected from the shuttle, the trailing end of filling will be free to be withdrawn from the shuttle. If it is not withdrawn when the filling carrier or bobbin is ejected, it is liable to be carried into the shed and produce a defect in the cloth.
Various devices have heretofore been suggested for withdrawing the old filling end from the shuttle, and some of these have operated with a fairly satisfactory result.
The present invention contemplates a device that will serve to withdraw the trailing end of the old filling from the sl'iuttie when replenishment has been efi'ected, and which will serve also to prevent an ejected filling carrier or bobbin from entering the picker stick slot.
An important feature of the present invention, therefore, consists of a filling end withdrawing device mounted independently of the lay to engage the old filling end when a filling carrier or bobbin is ejected from. the shuttle to withdraw the old filling end from the shuttle, and which device is supported so that it will lie over the picker stick slot while the filling carrier or bobbin is being ejected thereby to prevent any possibility of the filling carrier or bobbin entering the picker stick slot and becoming damaged.
Other features of the invention and novel mechanism and combination of parts in addition to the above, will be hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate one good practical form of the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the replenishing side portion of a filling replenishing loom having the present invention associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the lay and shuttle-box, showing also the filling end "withdrawing mechanism in the position the parts assume as the lay beats upfollowing a call for replenishment'of filling;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a preferred form of the filling end withdrawing device; and
Fig. 4: is a section view through the device of Fig. 3, on line 44t.
The loom frame 1 has mounted thereon. the magazine or hopper for containing filled carriers or bobbins to be transferred to the shuttle, and in the present instance the filling replenishing magazine is shown as of the rotary type, though this is not essential.
The bracket or stand 2 which supports the magazine is secured to the loom frame as by bolts 3, and supports the usual rotary hopper 4 in which filling carriers 5 are held for transfer to the shuttle.
Mounted on the transferrer arm or dead shaft 6 which extends laterally from the bracket or stand 2 is the transfer-rel" 7 normally held in its raised or inoperative position by a spring 8, as usual. Extending downwardly from the hub portion of the trans'terrer is an arml 9 to which is pivoted at 10 the dog 11 which is adapted to be engaged by a hunter on the lay when the dog has been moved to its operative or raised position as usual in this type of looms.
The lay 12 is provided with the shuttle be); 13 which has an opening let in its bottom for the discharge of the filling carrier which is to be ejected from the shuttle, and similarly the shuttle lo is likewise provided with a bottom opening to permit the passage of the ejected filling carrier, as usual.
Below the bottom opening in the shuttle and shuttle-box the lay 12 is cut away at 16 to provide a passage for the ejected filling carrier. type of looms, and the picker stick 17 moves back and forth in the picker stick slot 18 which is provided between a wall of the lay 12 and the spaced picker stick guide 19. .As stated, the filling carrier or bobbin upon being ejected from the shuttle 15 tends to fall into the picker stickslot 18 but is deflected fromthisslot by the chute plate 20 upon the lay. This chute plate, however, does not extend lengthwise of the slot 18 far enough to prevent the reduced end of the filling carrier from entering the slot in. case this end directed downwardly, and it sometimes happens that the reduced end of the filling carrier or bobbin enters the slot 18 and is broken oif in the slot or otherwise damaged.
To prevent this, the present'invention contemplates a device for withdrawing the trailing end of the old filling from the shuttle, and which device is supported over the slot 18 while the filling carrier or bobbin is being ejected, thereby to prevent any possibility of the filling carrier or bobbin entering'the picker stick slot.
Means to this end may be variously constructed, and in the embodiment shown, the old filling end withdrawing device comprises a plate 21 which extends transversely of the loom and is supported in its operative position by a shank portion 22 which is slidably mounted in a housing. 22%. This housing is secured adjustably to a bracket 24 by a clamp nut 2 5,and the bracket 24 is supported by the pin 26 which extends laterally from a downwardly extending portion 27 of the usual tip-su 'aporting arm 28. The bracket 24 may be secured in the desired position of adjustment upon the pin 26 by the set screw 29. The arrangement is such 7 that the plate 21 is supported by its shank portion 22 slightly above thepickerstick guide 19 at a steep inclination across the -slot.18, as will be apparent from Fig. 2,
and as the lay completes its forward stroke This, too, is as usual in thisit will. be seen that the filling end engaging plate 21 is supported independently of the lay and in position toextend over the slot- 18 when the lay is in its rorwardposition and a filling carrier or bobbin is being ejected, and since the plate 21 occupies this position only when the lay is in its forward position, the plate will not interfere with the normal movement of the picker stick 17 along the picker stick slot 18.
When a filling carrier or bobbin is ejected,
as at 88 (see Fig. 2), the trailing filling end i will extend downwardly from the shuttle 15 across the plate 21 which preferably has.
a serrated edge, and as the lay moves rearwardly after filling replenishment, the trailing end 84; will be pulled against the plate 21 and drawn by the plate clear of the shuttle.
The plate 21 and the shank portion 22 preferably are made of separate pieces of metal, and the former may be spot welded to a laterally extendingend 85 of the shank f portion, as at 36, which end may be bent to hold the plate 21 atthe steep transverse inclination shown. By forming the filling end withdrawing device of the separate parts 21 and 22, the relative strength of these parts may be varied as desired. What is claimed is:
1. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism, a lay having an aperture therethrough to permit the discharge of an old filling carrier, a picker stick guide mounted below the:
aperturedportion of the lay and in spaced relation to a wall of the lay to form a picker stick slot, a bracket supported independent of the lay and adjustable angularly and toward and from the front of the loom, and an old filling end withdrawing device comprisinga shank that is supported by the adjustable bracket for yielding frontw'ard' movement, and a relatively long narrow plate for engaging and withdrawing the trailing end of an ejected filling carrier, supported by said shank to enter the aperture of the lay above the picker stick guide and to engage the rear wall'ot' said aperture as the lay reaches the forward end of its stroke and arpermit the discharge of an old filling carrier, a picker stick guide mounted below the apertured portion of the lay and in spaced relation to a wall of the lay to form a picker stick slot, a bracket supported independent of the lay, and an old filling end withdrawing device comprising, a shank that is supported by the bracket for yielding frontward movement, and a relatively long narrow plate for engaging and withdrawing the trailing end of an ejected filling carrier, supported by said shank to lie in its entirety above the picker stick guide and to engage the rear wall of the aperture in the picker stick as the lay reaches the forward end of its stroke and arranged to extend in an inclined direction across the picker stick slot to prevent the ejected old filling carrier from entering said slot.
3. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism, a lay having an aperture therethrough to permit the discharge of the old filling carrier and having a picker stick guide spaced from the lay, a bracket supported independently of the lay, an old filling end withdrawing device comprising, a shank portion that is slidably mounted in the bracket for yielding frontward movement, and a filling end engaging plate supported by the shank portion to engage the lay as the latter reaches the forward end of its stroke and constructed and arranged to extend in a steeply inclined direction across the picker stick slot above the icker stick guide, thereby to prevent the e ected old filling carrier from entering the picker stick slot.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
